It’s time to submit nominations for Support Staff and Administrator of the Year awards for the 2012-13 year. Since this program was established in 1994 to recognize George Fox administrative and support staff members for their contributions, 46 employees have received this honor.

There are two separate awards: Support Staff Member of the Year and Administrative Staff Member of the Year. Each recipient will be honored with a plaque and a check in the amount of $500 at our first community meeting for 2013-14 in August. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, May 31.

The executive team will make the selections from nominations received and recommendations of an ad hoc committee that includes last year’s awardees.

Please send your nomination to Peggy Kilburg at pkilburg@georgefox.edu according to the following guidelines:

1. Nominations may be made from a list of support staff and administrators (contact Melodee Powers for the complete list). Those on the list meet the following eligibility criteria:

• .56FTE (usually 30 hours per week, 9 months) or above
• Completion of at least three years of service by March 31
• Continuing in employment next year unless retiring, and
• Not a previous recipient of this award

2. All George Fox employees may make nominations.

3. More than one person in each category may be nominated; however, a separate e-mail should be sent for each nomination.

Questions you may want to consider as you make your nomination:

• How has this person encouraged or helped you, other employees, and/or students?
• What is it about this person’s job performance that impresses you?
• What have been this person’s unique contributions above and beyond assigned duties?
• How does this person demonstrate Christian commitment, loyalty to George Fox, and leadership skills at the university and in the broader community?

I hope you will take some time to consider your colleagues’ contributions and nominate any you believe are deserving of this award.

If you are considering leaving your car on campus over the summer, please read below:

• Security recommends that you leave your car with a friend off-campus so they can watch over it AND start it up on a regular basis to keep the battery going.
• Leaving a car on campus is AT YOUR RISK! GFU is NOT responsible for any loss/damage to your car.
• If you MUST leave your car on campus, Security MUST have the key to it or it risks being towed.
• Clean out all valuables and have an emergency contact phone number ready when you drop off the key at Security.
• If it is after office hours, please call 503-554-2090 to arrange a time to drop off the key with the Security officer on duty. Please park the car in the Pennington lot in the row closest to the dorm.

Will you be around this summer? Want to help welcome new students to campus? We will be hosting our Genesis events on May 16, 17 & 18, June 13 & 14 and July 12 and are looking for volunteers!

Your main role will be to lead small groups of students and help them get to various locations throughout the day. You will also be engaging with them, helping ease their nerves, facilitating some ice-breaker games and generally getting them pumped up about Fox!

Interested in participating in the university’s community garden this summer? You can still join us!

Just come to the garden, located north of the Villa Academic Complex, on Wednesdays anytime between 4 and 7 p.m. (you can come and go as you’re available). We’ll also host potlucks Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.

The university will host two commencement ceremonies this Saturday, May 4. This year, the ceremony for graduate, seminary and adult degree programs is scheduled for 10 a.m., while the undergraduate ceremony is set for 3 p.m. Both will take place in Miller Gymnasium in the Wheeler Sports Center. A live streaming of the undergraduate ceremony will be shown in Bauman Auditorium.

John Davis, a business and real estate attorney who also serves as a state representative (District 26) in the Oregon State House of Representatives, will speak in both ceremonies. Audience seating begins an hour before each ceremony.

Commencement can be viewed live at this link 15 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.

Also on Saturday, undergraduate department receptions are scheduled at 1 p.m.

The Bruin Den will close at 2 p.m. this Friday, May 3, and will reopen Monday, May 6, with summer hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Also, the Villa Café will be closing early, at 2 p.m., this Friday, May 3.

Phase II will be open for viewing on Tuesday, May 7, in the Macy basement between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

At the end of every school year many students leave behind good, usable items for those who need them. These items often include blankets, clothing, kitchen supplies, small appliances, radios, room decorations, little tables, etc.

In an effort to help keep the dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of our resources, Phase II was initiated. Many students have benefited from these items. For example, summer work-study students often find what they need to set up for apartment living.

After students and employees view these items they are donated to local charities.

There will be no student mail delivered to student campus mailboxes after 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3. This will allow Mail Services to begin the switch from “school year” mode to “summer.”

Some important things to keep in mind:

• Students, be sure to clean out your mailboxes before you leave campus.
• Student mail delivery will resume on Monday, May 6.
• Students who requested their mailbox to remain open will receive mail as normal in their campus mailbox.
• U.S. Mail will be forwarded to those who requested their mailbox to be closed over the summer.

Regarding student class papers …

Returning students: Class papers that are returned after finals week or during the summer will be placed in the individual student campus mailboxes. Since students have their mailbox key over the summer, they can check for class papers. If they are not in the area, the class papers will be there for the student’s return in the fall.

Graduating students: Class papers for graduating seniors will be collected, sorted and stored at Mail Services for six months. Students can stop at Mail Services and ask for the class papers anytime after May 10.

This Friday, May 3, students will eat all three meals in Cap and Gown since the dining room is being used for graduation events. Breakfast and lunch hours stay the same, and dinner is from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

On Saturday, May 4, breakfast is from 9 to 10 a.m. and lunch, our final board meal, is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Graduating seniors and students who are not returning in the Fall:

Avoid a $15.00 key fine by returning your campus mailbox key before you leave campus this week.

There are key return envelopes in the lobby of Beebe and SUB Post Offices as well as at Mail Services – where you pick up packages.  Put your name and Box # on the envelope and the key inside the envelope.  The envelopes can be dropped in campus mail.

The marketing communications department hired alumnus Rob Leslie last week as Web usability and search engine optimization (SEO) administrator. He’s worked the last three years as online marketing manager and quality assurance analyst for OAC LLC, a B2B software company in Gresham. In 2010, Rob earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from George Fox, where he served as ASC communications director his final two years. He is in the process of moving to Newberg from his home in Gresham.

After 35 years of service to the university, Hank Helsabeck is retiring this spring. He has served as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences the past nine years and, before that, was a professor of math and computer science. He plans to take the next year to discover his future plans. “I’m convinced God has something for me besides biking, jogging and puzzle-solving,” he says.

Bonnie Jerke (Career Services) is retiring this spring after 33 years at George Fox. She has served as director of Career Services the past 29 years in addition to being Academic Success Program director part time during 14 of those years. Prior to that, Bonnie was a resident director living in Edwards Hall and also supervised RAs in apartment and house living areas. She plans to move back to her native Montana.

Carol Sherwood (Nursing) will retire this spring after returning to the university in 2012 on a one-year contract. She taught previously at George Fox for two years before retiring in 2008 and teaching on an adjunct basis.

Lois Hutchinson (Financial Affairs) is retiring from the university this spring. She is getting married and moving to Beaverton.

Mikell Benham (Portland Center Library) is retiring from George Fox this spring.

Mary Cameron (MLRC) is transferring to the Portland Center Library to replace the retiring Mikell Benham.

Bill Buhrow (Health and Counseling/Dean of Student Services) was selected president of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies at the organization’s annual international conference in Portland April 5. Reporting to the board of directors, the president provides the strategic vision, organizational leadership, financial management, and program coordination necessary to maintain and further develop the goals of the association. CAPS is the nation’s largest nonprofit association of Christians in the counseling and behavioral sciences.

Keith Dempsey and Richard Shaw (Graduate Counseling) attended Mutual of America’s Foundation Community Partnership Award Luncheon on April 25 at The Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, Wash., where they received an award on behalf of the Graduate Department of Counseling for its partnership with Community Services Northwest and The Wellness Project. George Fox has student interns at Community Services Northwest, which provides valuable, free counseling for the community.

Kathy Heininge just published her article, “Coming and Going: Eavan Boland and the Ablative,” in Breac, an online journal of Irish studies out of Notre Dame. She has also published an article, “Reading John McGahern,” in Anvil Lit Review, a journal published at Boise State. Finally, her article “Guinness Go Leor: The Authenticity of Irish Pubs” is forthcoming in a volume entitled “Changes in Contemporary Ireland,” which should be out next month from Palgrave.

Mark McMinn (Graduate Psychology) was presented the Christian Association for Psychological Studies’ highest honor, the “Distinguished Member Award,” at the CAPS international conference in Portland on April 5. The award stated that Mark’s writings in the field of Christian psychology “are some of the most profound contributions of our generation.”

Ed Higgins’ (English) poem “Morning Worship” is in the April 2013 issue of Looseleaf Tea, a California quarterly literature and arts online journal. Ed also had his poem “My Father Teaches Me To Drink Straight Shots” published in Redux, an “invitation-only literary journal of writers’ favorite, previously published stories and poems.”

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) has received a Fulbright Specialist Award supporting his service as a guest lecturer, consultant and researcher at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands for two weeks this summer and four weeks next summer. He will lecture on models of leadership in the New Testament, gospel traditions, and a “Fourth Quest for Jesus,” making use of the Gospel of John.

In addition, Paul has successfully founded (with Alan Culpepper) a new Johannine Monograph Series with Wipf & Stock, charged with publishing classic books on the writings of John in original or revised form. Paul also presented recently on “The First Fifty Years of Quaker Religious Thought” at the annual meeting of Quakers United in Publication held at Camp Menucha in Corbett, Ore. Finally, a book published in a series he edits (E.J. Brill’s Biblical Interpretation Series), Retelling Scripture: ‘The Jews’ and the Scriptural Citations in John 1:19-12:15, by Ruth Sheridan of Australia, won a 2013 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise, sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation, to be presented in Heidelberg, Germany, in May.
