The College of Education will be hosting a group of Chinese educators from Chengdu from Sept. 22 through Oct. 12. While they will be staying most of the time in a motel, they have also specifically requested that we provide a home-stay experience. The dates of the home stays will be Saturday, Oct. 5, through Wednesday, Oct. 9 (four nights). This allows not only time for the family to enjoy their guests, but also an opportunity for the guests to be included in some of their host family’s weekend activities.

Two or more are to be placed per home, but individual placements are also possible, as space allows. Host families are asked to provide sleeping accommodations and meals (except lunch on Monday and Tuesday). They ideally will also provide transportation to and from the Newberg campus. Each host family will be given $100 per guest to help defray costs.

Serve Day is coming on Wednesday, Sept. 11! If you are planning to purchase a meal, please complete this form so we know how much food to prepare. If you do not plan to purchase a meal, you do not need to complete this form.

Breakfast and dinner are provided for all employees; all meals are provided for team leaders and committee members. Dinner is available for purchase for families of employees; bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the quad after a wonderful day of service.

Marvin Olasky, editor-in-chief of World magazine and the author of more than 20 books and 3,000 magazine articles, will speak on the university’s Newberg campus from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in Bauman Auditorium. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is no charge to attend.

Olasky’s lecture, “Renewing the Christian Liberal Arts,” inaugurates the university’s new William Penn Honors Program, an alternative liberal arts general education program for undergraduate students set to launch in the fall of 2014.

In addition to his position at World – one of the world’s leading Christian news publications with 100,000 subscribers – Olasky is the Distinguished Chair in Journalism and Public Policy at Patrick Henry College. He is the author of 22 books, including Compassionate Conservatism, Fighting for Liberty and Virtue and The Tragedy of American Compassion. He’s also written 3,000 articles for publications including World, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. American.com describes him as “one of the country’s foremost evangelical thinkers and writers.”

Previously, Olasky was a professor at The University of Texas at Austin for two decades and provost of The King’s College in New York City, from 2007 to 2011.

My name is Gabe Haberly, and I am an assistant football/track coach and adjunct professor. I am a National Strength and Conditioning Association-certified strength and conditioning specialist and have a master’s degree in biomechanics from Oregon State. I would like to extend my strength and conditioning services to anyone who is interested in the George Fox community.

If you are looking for a personal trainer, or just wanting to know more about efficient ways of exercise, I would love to help you out! I have experience in many different areas, such as general weight training, circuit training, speed/strength development, pool training and cardiorespiratory development.

I have worked with many age ranges and fitness levels and can cater to your individual-specific goals, whatever they may be. Sessions will typically last one hour, but can be adjusted however necessary. Here are my rates:

• One person = $20/session
• 2-3 people = $15/session (per person)
• 4-5 people = $10/session (per person)
• 6-plus people = $5/session (per person)

Do you want to be involved in a worship team that will lead worship on and off campus this fall and spring? Join the Worship Ensemble! The course is designed to train musicians how to lead worship with passion and skill in various styles of music and instrumentation. You’ll learn how a praise band works together as well as how they play with a modern-day orchestra to the glory of God!

Only one week until Serve Day 2013!

Next Wednesday, Sept. 11, is our 15th annual Serve Day! All daytime classes are cancelled and offices will be closed. Please join us with hearts and hands ready to serve our community. We will be going to 89 different sites in Newberg and the surrounding area this year.

Final employee assignments will be e-mailed on Friday. Please carefully read the e-mail and pay attention to your site number, parking assignment, and the schedule for the day.

On-campus students will receive their assignments through their RA’s; commuters will receive their assignments via e-mail. All student assignments will be posted in the SUB on Monday, Sept. 9.

We are looking forward to serving alongside each of you and to seeing how God will work in and through our community next Wednesday.

A beginning guitar class and individual guitar lessons are being offered this fall on campus. Sign up and add some fun to your schedule!

The Beginning Guitar Class is offered for those new to the guitar who want to learn in a fun group setting. Learn to play awesome rock and roll classics and your favorite worship songs. No experience is necessary. MUSI 250-A (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 9:40-10:30 a.m).

Private Guitar Lessons are offered to bring your playing to the next level! One-on-one lessons cover beginners all the way to very experienced players. Sign up and get some new skills and techniques. Work on music that you really want to play. MUSA 105/305 GT

Lessons are taught by in-demand Portland guitarist Dave Iula. He performs with Portland’s top bands (Mel Brown, Patrick Lamb, Excellent Gentlemen) as well as many churches in Portland (Beaverton Foursquare, Southlake Church, Rolling Hills, Imago Dei Community).

Back to school and back to Employee of the Month awards! September marks the fifth anniversary of this tradition that honors our outstanding colleagues.

With so many working so hard to ensure that the new academic year begins well for our students, there are probably many whose contributions will especially stand out between mid-August and mid-September. If you know someone you believe deserves special recognition for “above and beyond” kind of work, please send an e-mail to Peggy Kilburg by Monday, Sept. 16. Your e-mail should include a summary of this colleague’s recent contributions and any other information that makes him or her deserving of this award.

The President’s Executive Leadership Team will select the recipient from the nominations submitted, and the winner will be honored with a citation and a $100 Visa gift card at our community meeting on Thursday, Sept. 26.

After working at the university on a temporary basis in career services since February, Corina Burke joins the institution on a full-time basis to work as an enrollment and career assistant in the student success center. Prior to her work at George Fox, Corina served as a project coordinator with Spirit Media of Happy Valley, Ore., where she managed multimedia production, website development and marketing/market research for the creative marketing agency in 2012-13. She also worked previously as an administrative assistant at New Song Community Church in 2011 and 2012. Corina earned a bachelor’s degree in cinema and media communication from George Fox in 2009. She lives in Newberg with her husband Ethan, who works at George Fox as a media production specialist. They attend New Song Community Church in Portland.

Paul Fodge, who has worked at the university part time the past eight years as both a carpenter in plant services and as a math instructor, has been hired full time to teach mathematics and do carpentry work. Prior to his employment at George Fox, Paul taught high school math in the Yamhill-Carlton School District for 33 years, from 1977 to 2010. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Western Oregon College of Education (1983) and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from George Fox (1977). He lives in Newberg with his wife Becky, who is also a George Fox graduate. They have three children – Stacy, Laura and Tim. Tim is the youngest and will graduate from George Fox this December. The Fodges attend Newberg Friends Church.

The university welcomes Bree Stairs as an area coordinator this fall. She’s worked the past two years as a youth pastor at River Life Covenant Church in Sacramento, Calif. Before that, she served as a children’s, youth and college pastor at West Hills Covenant Church in Portland. Bree gained higher education work experience as a resident director at North Park University in Chicago from 2006 to 2008. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from George Fox in 2001 and holds a master’s degree in Christian formation (emphasis in youth ministry and camping) from North Park Theological Seminary (2008). Bree lives in Sutton Residence Hall.

Rebecca Valdovinos joins George Fox this fall to serve as an assistant professor for the English Language Institute. For the past two years, she has worked as a full-time faculty member with the academic program for international students at Oregon State University. Previously, she taught in the Intensive English Program for international students at South Puget Sound Community College (2008-10) and taught floral merchandising and design at Clover Park Technical College (2004-06). She also gained teaching experience as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Washington, Azusa Pacific University and Washington State University at Centralia College. Rebecca earned a master’s degree in education (emphasis on Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) in 1994 and a bachelor’s degree in social studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1981. She lives in Newberg and has four adult children: Valarie (married to Nick Filer), Bobby and her twins Desiree and Dominique.
