Wheeler Sports Center will close on Wednesday, July 3, at 5 p.m. and reopen on Monday, July 8, at 6 a.m. The Colcord Field track will be open from dawn until dark on these days.

This full-time entry-level position will be split between the Financial Affairs Office and HR and is open to employees only until Friday, June 7, at 5 p.m.

Financial Affairs work will include cash receipts, account reconciliations, managing petty cash, and journal entry work.

HR work will include account reconciliations, tracking data for benefits and compliance, budget tracking/planning, assistance with administering benefits, and HR website maintenance.

Qualifications: bachelor’s degree in accounting; one year of accounting experience; strong detail orientation and high level of accuracy; ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; high level of initiative and ability to work independently.

Compensation: $14.04 to $14.50 per hour, depending on experience.

The university community is invited to a book signing by Spanish professor Debbie Berhó between 5 and 8 p.m. this Friday, June 7, at the Chapters coffee shop downtown (701 E. 1st St.). The event will be part of Newberg Downtown’s First Friday Art Walk.

Debbie will be signing copies of the book Protestant Hispanic Churches of Oregon, in which she provides information that serves as a bridge between Spanish-speaking and English-speaking churches and facilitates understanding between groups in the broader population.

Don’t forget the all-employee meeting scheduled for this afternoon (Thursday), from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 105. Among the items on the agenda is an update on enrollment.

For those at the university’s regional sites, the meeting will be available at a stream site that you can access from MyGFU. Simply log into MyGFU and click the “Community Meeting Link” located under “Staff Resources/Faculty Resources.”

The end of the fiscal year is quickly approaching, and with that I would like to inform you of a few requirements for year-end purchases.

Please remember that if you order merchandise, it needs to be physically here before July 1 in order to be charged to the 2012-13 fiscal year. Goods and services received after June 30, 2013 are required to be charged to the 2013-14 budget year.

Therefore, all purchasing for this fiscal year needs to be completed by June 14. No purchasing should be done for the 2012-13 year after this date. Merchandise ordered after this time frame frequently does not arrive by June 30, causing it to be charged to the following year. Also, invoices often don’t arrive for orders placed in late June until early August, long after we have closed the books for the year, again causing accounting problems.

Our Summer Serve team going to Romania and Moldova in June is collecting the following items to take with them for at-risk and orphaned children. Here is a list of items needed. We’d so much love your help gathering them.

All are invited to the Tilikum Trail Run and Family Fun Day at Camp Tilikum on Thursday, July 4. All fees and donations go to a camp scholarship fund that enables underprivileged youth to attend summer camp.

The day includes a 5K run and one-mile walk/run for all ages. The course includes gravel, trails and crossing a bridge and runs along the new path encircling the lake at Tilikum and throughout the grounds. Jogging strollers are welcomed. Camp Tilikum is a non-pet facility; please leave your pets at home.

Pre-register by Friday, June 14, and you’ll receive a T-shirt with a goody bag. Pre-registration is $35 (adult) and $15 (youth age 6-17). Ages 5 and under are free with one paid adult. The fee after June 14 goes up $10 per person.

Race-day registration opens at 9 a.m. Races begin at 10 a.m., with the awards and raffle ceremony to follow. Awards will be given to the first-place finishers in each age category (Men, Women and Youth Boy/Girl).

Please feel free to bring your family picnic and stay for a while afterwards. We will have canoeing and swimming open and available to all guests. You can also visit the barnyard animals, the century-old schoolhouse and tree house. Those not wanting to participate in the race but would like to come as a spectator are warmly welcomed!

Megan Hoy joined the university this month to work as a graduate admissions counselor for the doctor of psychology, doctor of business administration and doctor of education programs. She has worked the past year as a manager with Make-A-Wish Oregon, coordinating programs statewide to help make children’s wishes a reality. In 2011, she worked in Thailand as an international intern with Remember Nhu, an organization dedicated to preventing the exploitation of children in the sex trade. Prior to that, Megan gained management experience as an operations coordinator for EAN Holdings in Tualatin after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Arizona in 2007. Megan lives in Beaverton and plans to marry Justin Janes in September. She attends Solid Rock Church in downtown Portland.

The university hired Traci Porter as a part-time library assistant II and public services assistant. She has spent the past 15 years committing herself to raising and home-schooling her four children. She and her husband, Rob, also opened their home to foster children for a few years. After earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Linfield College in 1995, Traci and her husband attended the Great Commission Bible School in Honduras for 10 months, during which time they lived, learned and served in the beautiful, remote mountain village of Las Mangas. She and her family live in Amity.

Martha Iancu (English Language Institute/School of Education) has retired with the title “faculty emerita” after teaching at George Fox for 24 years. During her tenure, she served as an associate and assistant professor in the English Language Institute (ELI); as ELI director for 19 years; and as interim chair of the Department of Communication Arts for one semester. She was also a Fulbright Scholar in Romania in 1992-93. Martha looks forward to a relaxed pace of life and spending more time with her family.

Larry Shelton (Seminary) retired from George Fox after working at the seminary for 19 years. He was most recently the Richard B. Parker Professor of Wesleyan Theology. His titles before that included chair of the Graduate Department of Ministry (1997-99) and vice president of academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Western Evangelical Seminary (1994-96). Before that, Larry also held positions at Regent College, Fuller Theological Seminary, Seattle Pacific, John Wesley College, North Carolina A&T State University and Azusa Pacific. In all, Larry devoted 45 years of his life to theological education.

The following faculty members will not return to the university in the fall in order to pursue other opportunities: Steve Song (Education), Kristin Dixon (Education), Raelene Fendall (Education), Ken McChesney (Education), Robert Nava (Education), Patrick Ray (Engineering), Betty Jean Cordill (Education), Sue Newell (Social Work), Bob Ellis (Business) and Joanne Gray (Education/Boise).

Brenda Burg (Academic Affairs) is leaving George Fox after 13 years of service. Her last day will be May 30. She is teaming up with a partner to open a bakery in Newberg this fall.

Ed Higgins (English) published two poems, “Crucified” and “Pentecost,” in the inaugural May issue of Praise Writers Magazine, a Christian quarterly Canadian online and print journal. Ed also published the poem “Night Fears” this month in the literary magazine Collective Exile.

Melanie Mock’s (English) essay, “A Million and More,” was published in the just-released book, Results May Vary: Christian Women Reflect on Post-College Life, from Point Loma press.

Kris Kays (Psychology) coauthored, with Michael Broughal (a psychology major) and Tashina Keith (a PsyD student), a chapter in the book Advancing Research Methods with New Technologies, published by IGI Global of Hershey, Pa. According to editor Natalie Sappleton of Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), the book “comprises a collection of case studies detailing the use of new technologies in empirical research in various disciplines, from psychology to political science. It is hoped that the detail provided in these case studies will reduce researchers’ anxiety about adapting these new technologies for use in their own work.”

Heather Ayala (Biology) and her husband, Adolfo, welcomed a son, Alberto Tomas, on May 7. He was born at Providence Newberg Hospital and weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, while measuring 21 inches. Alberto joins siblings Arturo (4) and Ana Sofia (2).

Davida Brown (Chemistry) and her husband, Rich, welcomed a son, Bennet Thomas, on May 13. He was born at Legacy Meridian Park Hospital and weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces, while measuring 21 inches. He joins an older sister, Abby (6).
