This is a scholarship writing workshop that will take place Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Cap and Gown Room from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gerardo Ochoa, the co-author of Path to Scholarships® College Edition will be leading the workshop, in which you will get the chance to:

So, why are you receiving it? Because you are recognized as either a student or employee at the institution. As before, news entries will be disseminated by location, with forums for Newberg students, Newberg employees, Portland students and Portland employees. You have been enrolled in the appropriate forum based on your location and student/employee designation.

As for submitting news, you still do so by logging into MyGFU, clicking the “Ennouncement Request” link, and filling out the form.

The Daily Bruin is the official communication vehicle for the university. You may opt out from receiving it, but we wouldn’t recommend it! In doing so, you run the risk of missing out on important news and events.

The College of Business invites the university community to come visit with Becca Mohally Renk from the Center for Development in Central America in the Student Union Building today (Wednesday) from noon to 4 p.m.

Becca can tell you about her work with farmer cooperatives, a health clinic, and small business financing. She will also have an array of artisan crafts for sale that support the work of the CDCA in Nicaragua.

Join the First Year Seminar program and others in the George Fox community as we consider God’s boundless compassion for others and for us. Mike Foster, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, will lead our discussion on the book Tattoos on the Heart from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in Hoover 105.

Have you been on a missions trip? Are you an MK or a PK? Are you interested in learning more about the mission field?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you should come to the 2013 Missions Welcome Back Event at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Greenroom. This will be a time of fellowship where we can share stories about missions experiences and how God has been at work around the globe. Tonight (Wednesday) is the second Redeeming Life support group meeting for those struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating at George Fox. We don’t come with all the answers but we do offer support, hope and healing through the journey of recovery. We’ll be meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. in the second-floor lounge of the Hoover Academic Building.

Come find nourishment for your mind and heart as you find solidarity with others who have walked a similar path. You are never alone. There is life, hope and freedom from an eating disorder.

The Admissions Office is looking for a new T-shirt design for this year’s Bruin Preview! There is only one week left (October 7 is the last day).

Come and see how you can learn about social work as a profession that centers on serving people at 8:30 p.m. on October 7 in the Cap and Gown Room. Join us for refreshments and sweets while we have Q & A with the Director of the Social Work Department, Cliff Rosenbohm. We will discuss different graduate MSW degree programs in addition to gaining a general understanding of the different focuses offered in graduate school.

If you are already a social work major this meeting will be absolutely invaluable to you no matter how far along you are in the program. If you’re considering what it would look like to be a social worker, come check it out for some valuable information!

Today is the LAST day to turn in SCORR applications!

If you don’t know what SCORR is, it stands for Student Congress on Racial Reconciliation. The purpose of SCORR is to “glorify God by empowering students to better face the challenges existing on their campuses, in their communities, and in society at large through multi-ethnic awareness and engaging in the active process of racial reconciliation.”

SCORR consists of a weekly discussion meeting in a close knit group and going to an annual conference in February at Biola University. This is a great way to network on and off campus, but most importantly to make a difference.

SCORR is the beginning of a life long journey of learning to glorifying God by seeing all people, all races, and all cultures through his eyes. The online application is now open to ALL interested students!

The fall staff conference is set for Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Staff Development Committee is looking forward to an exciting day with all support staff! The theme of this year’s conference is “Serving One Another in Love” and will answer the question, “How do we engage with and serve our students?” Joining us will be a student choir, and we’ll hear from those we serve via a student panel.

The conference takes place at Newberg Christian Church from 8 to 11:30 a.m., with breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. for early risers. The church is located at 2315 Villa Road, Newberg. Due to allergies, please do not wear perfume or cologne at this event.

Monday’s workshop is scheduled from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. and Tuesday’s from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both will meet in Hoover 105.

Here is a synopsis of the workshop:

Most of us don’t worry too much about a writing mistake or two. It’s what we have to say that really matters, right? Well, yes – and no. The bad news is that too many editing errors can keep our readers from taking us – and our ideas – seriously. The good news is that most of our errors are relatively easy to fix, once we figure out which ones we’re prone to make.

In this workshop, Bill will identify the 10 errors that professors are most likely to mark on student work, and he’ll demonstrate how to fix them.

Karen Bowdoin joins the university this fall on a full-time basis to work as a visiting associate professor of art. She has worked at George Fox as an adjunct instructor since 2005. Previously, she served as vice principal of Open Bible Christian School in Newberg from 1988 to 1994 and taught art at the same school for eight years (1986 to 1994). Karen holds an MFA from Azusa Pacific University (2013) and a BFA from the Oregon College of Art & Craft in Portland (2004). She lives in Dundee with her husband Steve. They have three grown children – Heather Capell, Justin Bowdoin and Mandy Bowdoin – and four grandchildren.

Laurie Lieggi joins George Fox as a library assistant and interlibrary loan coordinator this fall. She comes to the university from the Newberg Public Library, where she’s worked as a library assistant for the past 12 years. Previously, she was employed at George Fox as a reference librarian and an assistant professor from 1997 to 2000. She also gained librarian experience overseas, working in that capacity at the International Christian School in Hong Kong from 1995 to 1997. Laurie earned a master’s degree in library science from Indiana University in 1994 and a bachelor’s degree in history from Northwest Nazarene University in 1985. She lives in Newberg with husband John and children Jakin and Isabella. They attend Newberg Christian Fellowship.

Trena Worthington joins plant services this fall as a custodian. For the past eight years she has run her own cleaning service out of her home. Previously, she worked for 14 years (1985 to 1999) as a rehabilitation therapist, using her training in music therapy to assist adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities at the Sonoma Developmental Center in Eldridge, Calif. Trena earned a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from Willamette University in 1980. She continues to stay active in music activities, participating in the hand bell choir with Newberg Friends Church and playing in the Newberg Community Band the past 14 years. She lives in Yamhill with her husband Chuck and daughter Elise.

Beth Molzahn’s (Graduate Admissions) final day at George Fox is this Friday, Oct. 4. She has served at the university for 18 years (plus four years as a student employee). She plans to work with her husband Rob in his real estate business and start a ministry helping those who need assistance with projects around the house. Her first regular employee assignment with George Fox was as an administrative assistant for humanities, then as an executive assistant in academic affairs. She has spent the last 11 years in graduate admissions, primarily serving MAT faculty and students.

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) recently published the book Following Jesus: The Heart of Faith and Practice through Barclay Press. It describes the essence of Christian discipleship from a Quaker perspective. Paul also presented two papers at the International Society of Biblical Literature Conference at St. Andrews in Scotland: “A Bi-Optic Hypothesis” and “Identity and Implications – The Ethics of Integrity in the Johannine Epistles.” His essay, “Incidents Dispersed in the Synoptics and Cohering in John—Dodd, Brown, and Johannine Historicity,” appeared in Engaging with C.H. Dodd on the Gospel of John – Sixty Years of Tradition and Interpretation (Cambridge University Press). The John, Jesus, and History Project, of which Paul is a founding member, has organized an international symposium at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore later this fall to discuss the book and its implications.
