James Project is calling all volunteers willing and able!

From 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, a group of students are getting together, through James Project (our campus community service outreach ministry), to partner with Love INC (a local service & networking organization) to meet the needs of people in our community.

This Saturday, we’ll be meeting and serving a handful of amazing people in our community, working alongside fellow students to mow lawns, work in gardens, do other yard work and some needed housework as well.

Randy Woodley from our own seminary will be at the Newberg campus tonight (Thursday) to speak at Shalom at 9 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room.

Randy is the director of intercultural and indigenous studies at George Fox Evangelical Seminary and the author of books that include Shalom and the Community of Creation: An Indigenous Vision. Randy will be sharing some of these reflections on shalom and wholeness tonight. Come join us for discussion, bread and worship music.

The women’s basketball team opens its season this weekend by hosting the George Fox Classic Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, in the Wheeler Sports Center/Miller Gym. The complete tournament schedule:

The university’s College of Christian Studies and William Penn Honors Program invite all to a free presentation, “Re-Tuned by God: The Future of Worship,” featuring Jeremy Begbie of Duke Divinity School and Wolfson College, Cambridge, at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in Bauman Auditorium.

Begbie will speak, perform, and use recorded music and visual material to explore the way the New Testament helps us understand more deeply some of the basic components of worship. He is a professionally trained musician and theologian who has taught in the United Kingdom and North America and delivered multimedia performance lectures around the world.

In addition to his Monday performance, Begbie will speak as a guest of the music and religion departments on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Ross 208. The “Intellectual Feast” session is also open to the university community free of charge.

Begbie, described as “a musician and theologian par excellence” by N.T. Wright, is the inaugural holder of the Thomas A. Langford Research Professorship in Theology at Duke Divinity School and a senior member at Wolfson College, Cambridge. More information and a video of Begbie is available here.

There has been a confirmed case of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) on our campus recently, and we want to encourage our students, faculty and staff to check their immunization status.

If you have not received a Tdap Tetanus shot since 2006, we recommend that you get the vaccine. It will help against spreading Pertussis to others, especially pregnant women and infants. The Tdap vaccine is available here at the Health Center or at your local pharmacy.

Cultural Celebration Week is a great time to remind all of us about the expectations of living in a Christ-centered community that honors diversity as an important value derived from our theological and Quaker roots. We believe that all people are of great worth and value in the eyes of our Creator God and seek to increasingly become a campus characterized by loving support of one another.

Cultural humility means that we seek to understand, appreciate and celebrate others who are different from ourselves. Language and/or behavior that relies on stereotypes or is demeaning toward individuals or groups of individuals is unacceptable for George Fox students and employees, whether it occurs in person, through social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), or anonymously.

We want to remind everyone that George Fox has a Harassment and Discrimination Policy and a Bias-Related Incident Policy. Any incidents of harassment, discrimination or bias should be reported immediately to the student life office (to Mark Pothoff, dean of community life, or Brad Lau, vice president for student life).

We would also encourage community members to hold one another accountable for what we say and do in this important area. May God enable each of us to be more and more like Jesus in the way we treat one another!

Are you shivering a bit going in between buildings, and are you maybe a bit parched as well? Is it hard to study for that exam or write that paper without your notebooks and books? Can’t play your tunes in the library because you lost your ear buds?

Well, then come to the Bruin Den on Wednesday and Thursday of this week from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to see if your lost hoody, coat, water bottle, coffee mug, book, notebook, and most anything else you’ve misplaced has been turned in. All items not reunited with their owners will be donated to charitable causes at 1:30 on Thursday afternoon, so be sure to stop by!

Redeeming Life, the support group for those struggling with eating disorders or disordered eating, continues to meet every other week. Join us tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 8 p.m. in the religious studies lounge on the second floor of Hoover.

We walk alongside those in recovery, through encouragement, support and prayer. We don’t have a set agenda for each meeting. However, in the past we have focused our conversations on body image and advertising and how one can succeed in recovery when we live in a culture that is obsessed with dieting, fitness and appearance. More recently, we have been talking about how to survive the holiday season while in recovery (it is possible!).

Come to Redeeming Life and find hope and healing on your journey toward wholeness and freedom.

Our special speaker is Lisa Espineli Chinn, director of international student ministries for InterVarsity USA. She will be sharing her personal cross-cultural journey from ignorance and prejudice to acceptance and celebration.

The Parade of Flags, with Gioia Zhang and Svetlana Voloshin directing, is back with 20 cultures being represented.

The School of Physical Therapy invites the university community to hear Dr. Tim Flynn (PT, PhD), distinguished professor at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, as he lectures on “Turning the Traditional Classroom into a 21st Century Knowledge Exchange.” He will join us from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Hoover 105.

Synopsis
Let’s face it: Technology is changing the face of education from preschool through graduate school. Physical therapy education is no exception. Despite a body of evidence suggesting that the traditional lecture style instruction is lacking, it remains the predominant mode of information exchange.

In the last decade there has been a move toward the flipped classroom where students watch lectures at home at their pace and communicate with peers and faculty with online discussions. Face-to-face time with the faculty focuses on engaging problem solving and laboratory experiences.

This presentation will discuss how current best evidence lectures are produced and shared as homework assignments outside of class while sacred classroom time is reserved for collaborative work and hands-on learning activities. We will describe mechanisms to ensure learning is occurring and preliminary outcomes using this methodology.

Upon completion, attendees will be able to:

• Define blended learning
• Identify and discuss the six primary blended learning models
• Describe characteristics of successful online learners and teachers
• Describe the flipped classroom model
• Identify key technical components required to successfully implement the flipped classroom model in DPT education
• Examine the benefits, risks and challenges of this model

Dr. Flynn is board-certified in orthopaedic physical therapy, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, and a frequent research presenter at state, national and international meetings.

Our own Paul Anderson visited the Vatican for a second time last month. At our Intellectual Feast today (Tuesday), Paul will talk about reading his paper at the Ratzinger Symposium on “The Gospels: Historical and Christological Research,” as well as sharing silent worship with Pope Francis, and giving the Pope a copy of his new book on radical discipleship, Following Jesus.

The event is from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 250 (lounge) and is open to the public; refreshments are provided. For more information, contact Paula Hampton at 554-2650.

There will be a place to donate funds toward typhoon survivors and those affected by the typhoon in the Philippines at the university’s Cultural Fair, scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Bruin Den. Come stop by the Filipino cultural booth to learn more about Filipino culture and donate toward afflicted families in the country.

Kipp Wilfong joins the admissions team as a graduate admissions counselor this week. Kipp will primarily serve as a counselor for the MAT and EDFL programs. He arrives from the North Dakota State College of Science, where he served as recruitment coordinator, and before that as an outreach coordinator and regional admissions representative for the University of North Dakota. Kipp earned his master’s degree in communication/educational leadership from the University of North Dakota in 2008, and taught several undergraduate courses as a graduate teaching assistant. Kipp also holds a bachelor’s degree in interpersonal communication from the University of North Dakota. He currently lives in Oregon City and attends Prince of Life.

Nancy Gard (School of Education) left the university on Oct. 31, as she is moving to South Beach, Ore., to help her husband run his automotive repair business.

Mandria Montplaisir (Development) left the university earlier this month to pursue other endeavors.
