Know of students who need some help when it comes to budgeting and personal finances? The Academic Resource Center is hosting a workshop, “Financial Follies: Budgeting, Credit Cards and Personal Finance,” on both Tuesday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 25. Ryan Halley, associate professor of finance, will lead the sessions.

Tuesday’s workshop is scheduled in Lemmons 8 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Friday’s in Hoover 105 from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. Please encourage students to attend.

Would you like to carry a flag representing your cultural heritage in the Nov. 13 chapel to open Cultural Celebration Week? If so, please fill out this form. The Parade of Flags is a colorful and exciting way we recognize the different cultures and countries represented at George Fox. If you volunteer, we will provide the flag and contact you with more details.

Who may carry a flag? Anyone who is from another country, lived in another country, was a missionary in another country, or has a cultural heritage from another country. It is a great way to show pride in your culture!

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m., the university will host a Cultural Fair in the Bruin Den – and we’d love to have you participate! The Cultural Fair will feature students from Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas sharing something about their own culture (food, displays, clothing, games, etc.).

If you would like to share your culture at the Cultural Fair, please complete this form. We can reimburse you up to $50 for costs you may incur by presenting at the Cultural Fair. We will contact you with more detailed information soon.

This Thursday, Oct 17, the Department of Communication Arts & World Languages is hosting an event, “Sendas para el Futuro,” as part of our fall vocational exploration series.

George Fox alumni Jessica Lebold Kouka and Cara Ediger will speak about their work and ministry with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Africa, their additional training through the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and how their studies of Spanish and French at George Fox prepared them to live and work cross-culturally.

Make plans to join us for the university’s Fall Faculty Lecture, “Cancer Wars: A New Hope,” presented by Dr. John Schmitt from our biology department, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Hoover 105.

Cancer claims the lives of nearly 8 million people worldwide annually, with breast and prostate cancer deaths totaling more that 500,000 each year. To borrow a metaphor from his favorite movie, Star Wars, Dr. Schmitt has joined the scientific fight against cancer, a.k.a. the “evil Death Star.” His research focuses on the cell, biochemical and molecular events that control, regulate or participate in cancer.

About the Lecture

In his lecture, Dr. Schmitt will highlight recent discoveries from his laboratory. Among the questions he will address are “Which hormones promote breast and prostate cancer growth and metastasis?,” “What are CaM Kinases and why are they important?,” What role might Vitamin D play in blocking cancer growth?” and “How do we generate hope for people who are battling cancer?”

Prior to the lecture, George Fox Richter Scholars will present their work in a Richter Scholar Symposium at 5 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. The Richter Scholars program enables undergraduate and graduate students to receive funding for independent research projects conducted with a faculty mentor.

The director of GoED Africa and Mekong (Thailand) semester programs will visit campus this Friday, Oct. 18. Michael Pucci will be speaking in various classes and hold an information table in the Bruin Den between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

GoED Africa and GoED Mekong are both off-campus semester-long programs available for George Fox students.

Today (Tuesday) is the last day Kristen Leichty, a George Fox alumna, will be at an informational table in the Bruin Den to advertise George Fox’s newest off-campus program in Lithuania.

Beginning on Monday, Oct. 21, the administrative offices on the first floor of the Stevens Center will have new business hours: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This change includes Career Services, Enrollment Counseling, Learning Support Services, Disability Support Services, Student Accounts and the Registrar’s Office. Some forms will be accepted at the Information Desk between 8 and 9 a.m.

Human resources welcomes Kera Hallman as a payroll specialist this month. She arrives with more than eight years of management experience and more than 11 years of administrative support experience. Most recently, she worked the past four years as a human resources assistant for Chehalem Youth and Family Services of Newberg. Before that, she was an administrative assistant to the lead pastor at Element3 Church in Tallahassee, Fla. (2007-09). Her community involvement has included organizations such as Faith in Action (board of directors), the Newberg Fire Department (auxiliary member) and the Newberg Chamber of Commerce (volunteer). She and her husband, Les, live in Newberg with their two children, Mitchell and Reid. The family attends Newberg Christian Fellowship.

Jennifer Kepler joined the academic affairs office as an administrative assitant this month. For the past six years she has worked as a program coordinator at Oregon Health & Science University, providing administrative support for a research training program and assisting in the preparation of grant proposals. Before that, she spent two years at the University of California, San Diego, as a laboratory coordinator. Jennifer also gained higher education experience as a faculty research assistant at Oregon State University from 2001 to 2005. She holds a master’s degree in education from Oregon State University (2013) and a bachelor’s degree in biology from OSU (2001). Jennifer lives in Newberg with her husband Richard. They have a 4-year-old son (Jonathan) and are looking forward to the arrival of their newest addition (a boy) later in the fall. The family attends Newberg Christian Church.

The graduate admissions team at the Portland Center welcomed Kelly Lafferty as an inquiry and applications coordinator last week. As a student in the George Fox’s Master of Arts in Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling program, Kelly worked as a student employee in graduate admissions this summer. Previously, from 2008 to 2012, she served as an education assistant for the Clackamas Education Service District in Clackamas, Ore. Kelly holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice from Portland State University (2008). She lives in Estacada with children KC (21), Kristina (19) and Kaden (14) and attends Estacada Assembly of God.

A two-part special issue that Lori DeKruyf (Graduate School of Counseling) and two colleagues from across the country have been collaborating on has been published in the American School Counseling’s flagship journal, Professional School Counseling. Part 1 of “School counselors and student mental health” was published this past June; Part 2 just came out Oct. 2. Lori coauthored two articles within Part Two of the special issue. The lead author on one of the articles is George Fox school counseling alumna Jacinta Nafziger, who is now a school counselor in her home state of Ohio. In addition, Lori was selected as an Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Fellow for 2013-14.

Ed Higgins’ (English) flash fiction story “My dark job history” was published in the Fall 2013 issue of the online journal Sanity not Guaranteed. Also, his poem “As A Vampire” is in the Autumn 2013 issue of Star*Line, the quarterly journal of the Science Fiction Poetry Association.

Don’t forget next week’s fall staff conference, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Staff Development Committee is looking forward to an exciting day with all support staff! The theme of this year’s conference is “Serving One Another in Love” and will answer the question, “How do we engage with and serve our students?” Joining us will be a student choir, and we’ll hear from those we serve via a student panel.

The conference takes place at Newberg Christian Church from 8 to 11:30 a.m., with breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. for early risers. The church is located at 2315 Villa Road, Newberg. Due to allergies, please do not wear perfume or cologne at this event.

We need your help at ReGeneration Forum, a practical day-long gathering for those interested in learning about how God is at work among millennials. Volunteers will receive free admission to the Saturday, Oct. 19, event.

• During the event: Saturday, Oct. 19, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (check-in table, book-sales table, food-service assistance, and other related guest-care and speaker-care tasks)
• Tear-down: Saturday, Oct. 19, 5-7 p.m.

The spoken word workshop with Amena Brown will be taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. The location will be dependent upon the number of people interested. There will be snacks and refreshments provided!

As a part of a generation that is searching for the real and the genuine in an age of constant carbon copy, Amena is both regal and dramatic in her creative interpretation on the stage, and in her candid and expressive conversation one on one. This nonconformist lends her voice to finding inspiration, truth and purpose and encourages those she encounters to do the same.

Please mark your calendars for this Wednesday, Oct. 16, after evening chapel. At 8:40 p.m. in the Bauman Greenroom, we’ll host a 30- to 45-minute event to focus on what’s involved with Youth Ministries and the Little Bruins program! Food and drinks will be provided.

We’ll be brainstorming, discussing youth ministries, and signing up for “project teams” for planning parties and events. “Project teams” are Outreach Ministries’ new way of doing committees in which you can sign up to help out in a specific way (like planning events, picking out supplies, or decorating for a party).

Winter Serve applications are now open! We are sending teams to Colorado to help with flood relief; Portland; Twin Rocks; Puyallup, Wash.; and Tacoma, Wash. The teams leave the last week of winter break, Jan. 4-11.

The application will be open until Nov. 1. Priority will be given to applications submitted first. No late applications will be accepted.
