Shalom’s own Megan Armentrout will be sharing tonight (Oct. 17). Megan will be leading us in discussion about the practical applications of justice, mercy and humility. How can we consider justice beyond our church pews or classrooms? How does mercy differ from grace? Come for music and fresh bread, stay for these and other questions. James Project, our weekly community service outreach ministry, is looking for more volunteers to serve the community this weekend. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, James Project will be partnering with local outreach organization, Love INC, to serve in the homes of elderly and needing families in our community. Our neighbors need help with housework, organizing space, yard work, cleaning and more.
We have five different projects this week and could use more volunteers to fill each group, as well as three more people to drive their vehicles to these locations in the Newberg area.

Habitat for Humanity, a Christian ministry, is one of the largest home builders in America. The work done by Habitat locally will be outlined by Rick Rogers, Newberg Area Habitat executive director, at this month’s Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest.
The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in the Villa Academic Complex. There is no charge to attend; donations are accepted.
Rogers has nearly 20 years of nonprofit experience in the fields of overseas development, small business development, public health, transitional housing for the homeless and self-help housing. That work experience has taken place in Arizona, Brazil, Hawaii, New Hampshire and West Africa. He also has been involved in journalism and banking.
Rogers moved to Newberg in 1999 and joined Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity a year later. He also works as a consultant for other area nonprofits, principally in accounting and grants management. Additionally, he serves on two Newberg city government committees and is head coach of a local high school boys rugby team.

Just a reminder that Winter Serve applications are now open! We are sending teams to Colorado to help with flood relief; Portland with Home PDX; Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity; Twin Rocks; Puyallup, Wash.; and Tacoma, Wash. The teams leave the last week of winter break, Jan. 4-11. Dates for Colorado may change due to transportation.
The application will be open until Nov. 1. Priority will be given to applications submitted first. No late applications will be accepted. Space on the Colorado trip is filling up fast.

The William Penn Honors Program invites you to a special evening featuring E. Christian Kopff, associate professor of classics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. American students will be matched with international students and the two of them will meet together once a week to talk about their cultures. Tonight (Wednesday) is the Redeeming Life meeting, which meets every other week. This group is a place of support and encouragement for those struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating. We’ll meet from 7 to 8 p.m. in the religious studies lounge (second floor of Hoover). Student Annie Stewart and Professor Melanie Hulbert will facilitate.
We’re creating a place where people can be free to talk about their struggles with others who have walked – or are walking – a similar path. Recovering from any addiction is hard enough. It is even harder to recover from an eating disorder when we live in an eating disordered culture, bombarded with unrealistic images every single day, practically at every turn. However, full recovery is possible. With time, hard work, encouragement and accountability from others, a recovered life will be a reality.
Think about these questions:
You may be on your way to an eating disorder, but that’s not the end of the story. There is a life free from this.

The university’s theatre department invites you to join us for our fall drama, The House of Bernarda Alba (la Casa de Bernarda Alba), by Federico Garcia Lorca. Shows are scheduled in Wood-Mar Auditorium Oct. 24-26 and Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The final show is a matinee, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3.
Synopsis: Immediately following her husband’s death, Bernarda Alba orders her five daughters to observe an eight-year mourning period in which none of them will leave the house. The young women do their best to obey their mother, but when the handsome Pepe el Romano arrives on the scene the young women’s desire to honor their mother’s tradition is set against their yearning for freedom. Originally written as a critique of the rise of fascism in 1936, The House of Bernarda Alba addresses themes of repression and the fear of change. Michelle Seaton is directing.
