Join us at our first Table Talk of the semester! We’ll meet from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in the Executive Dining Room.

The theme this time will be surrounding the topic of Thanksgiving (its meaning and history). We want to bring to the surface the strong role Native Americans have played in the history of the United States as well as the struggles they have gone through and are still going through.

Come join us for a movie and discussion about the issues faced by a Quaker family during the Civil War – a family opposed to slavery and war, but also hoping to protect family and friends.

Wheeler Sports Center will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, and reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 2.

Do you remember Steve Taylor – the 1980s-era Christian rocker who challenged the church with such albums as I Want to Be a Clone, Meltdown (at Madame Tussaud’s) and On the Fritz? Steve also produced and directed the 2012 film Blue Like Jazz. He will be on campus today (Thursday), and you are welcome to meet him.

Steve will speak in two classes – in a video editing class from 10:30 to 11:50 a.m. in the Media Center and in a studio sound recording class in the same location from 2:45 to 4 p.m. He’ll also speak at a “SpiL” event from 1:20 to 2:10 p.m. in Stevens 109 (chapel credit available).

Finally, Steve will be available during an informal meet and greet time from 4 to 5 p.m. in Stevens 101. Feel free to bring your old vinyl records for him to sign.

What does it mean to be a “hilarious” giver — the type of giver that God loves? That is a timely question as the current year is about to conclude, and many charities and ministries offer donors an opportunity to make a difference.

Ron Frey’s presentation at this month’s Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest will deliver some no-nonsense ideas about how to become a strategic and generous giver. The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, in the Villa Academic Complex.

A Portland native who lives with his family in Happy Valley, Frey is founder and president of Frey Consulting Group, advising clients in management, marketing and fundraising. His career has included leadership in some of America’s largest international faith-based organizations along with consulting a wide variety of ministry organizations, from domestic and foreign missions, youth organizations, camps, and international relief and development organizations.

Come join the Writings of John class for a movie and discussion. We’re watching The Gospel of John, featuring the biblical text rendered on the movie screen. Interesting presentations of the narrative abound, followed by a brief discussion.

Calling all scarf knitters! If you love knitting scarves and want to use your talent toward something good, we are making donations to the homeless! As the weather gets colder and we are inside snuggled in our warm pajamas and blankets, there is someone out there who doesn’t have that privilege. In order to make their Christmas a little warmer, we are making and donating scarves.

All are invited to a “Reflections on Advent” service in the Cap and Gown Room at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2. Students, this counts as a chapel elective!

Join us as the Worship Ensemble and engaging guest speaker lead you thoughtfully through Advent themes in celebrating the birth of Jesus, the Christ. Music will range from modern renditions of old hymns to newly written songs about Christ and his Advent.

We will also be joined by George Fox artists from Gary Buhler’s art class who will give artistic impressions to the themes presented.

Robin and Ruth Baker invite employees and their families to join them for the Bakers’ annual Christmas Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Edwards House (402 S. College St.). Light appetizers and holiday sweets will be served as we celebrate together.

Students will see meal plan charges for spring semester on their next bill for the new semester (Spring 2014).

Students who are eligible to make changes to their meal plan will be able to do so starting Jan. 2, 2014. through January 24, 2014.

Consider adding Technical Writing (WRIT 240) to your spring schedule. Here’s a few reasons why:

• Though the course title may sound intimidating, Technical Writing is an extremely practical course that will help anyone who plans to work in an organization (business, research, education, nonprofit) write more effective reports, letters, memos and emails.
• It will look good on your resume. Surveys tell us that effective writing skills are at the top of employers’ lists in the hiring process.
• The instructor, Gary Tandy, has 15 years’ experience as a full-time and contract technical writer for business and educational organizations.
• While this class may have the most direct application to science, engineering and business majors, liberal arts or humanities majors can also benefit. The major writing project for the class can be tailored to your major or career interest.

The 2014 Summer Serve application deadline is this Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m.

Prayerfully consider joining us this May/June for a “SpILgrimage” to meet and love Christ amongst the “least of these” (Matthew 25:40).

Our aim for 2014 Summer Serve really is to learn from and serve alongside our friends and “kingdom”-partners from Word Made Flesh communities in Romania/Moldova and Argentina. We hope to serve WMF as they live their lives in service by committing themselves to long-term friendship, solidarity and love of their neighbors who constitute some of the most vulnerable of the world’s poor.

Note to Juniors: If you are in your third year at Fox and would like to lower the cost of this Summer Serve experience, you can go on Summer Serve in place of Juniors Abroad and then the Summer Serve trip airfare would be covered by Juniors Abroad (i.e. personal fundraising budget would be lowered by approx. 55 percent).
