Midterm grades are important indicators of how you are doing in your classes. While they are not a part of your permanent record, they are important to pay attention to.

In some cases, midterm grades represent about half your grade in the course. If you have questions, you should check with your professors. It is vital to know where you stand in each of your classes.

Midterm grades are meant to encourage you to get in touch with others: your professor, your advisor, your enrollment counselor, the Academic Resource Center.

The WORST thing to do about midterm grades is to ignore them or to assume you can improve them on your own.

Professors DO want to meet with you. Do not hesitate to make an appointment with each of them.

Midterm grades are due by Friday, Nov. 1, 2013. You should plan to check your midterm grades after this date.

Now you need to determine what to do next:
Contact your professors. Faculty are not required to enter midterm grades. You are advised to check with each of your professors about your status in their class.

Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D).

The last date to withdraw is Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013.

You can usually go below 12 hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid or housing. However, you should contact representatives in these departments to be certain:

• Withdrawal results in a W on your transcript but does not factor into GPA.
If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA.

• Confirm any thoughts of withdrawing from classes with your advisor.

• Meet with each professor, especially those teaching courses you’re struggling in. Even if your professor doesn’t post mid-term grades, find out from the professor what your grade is.

• Meet with your advisor to discuss options.

• Use labs, help sessions and the ARC.

• If you think you might have a learning disability, have some assessment done. Contact the Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340 or stop by their offices.

• Plan well for spring semester. Contact your enrollment counselor to get advise about spring semester.

Join us for the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture this Monday, Oct. 28, when Liber Aguiar, pastor of Montavilla Baptist Ministerio Hispano, speaks from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our the theme “State of the World.”

Aguiar will speak on “Missionary Work: The Old Model is Always New,” in which he will speak about what Christian missions looks like in this postmodern age of innovation. He argues that missionaries must be creative and adaptable while remaining faithful to the apostolic foundation.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

All are welcome to today’s (Friday’s) international chapel from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in the International Center/Cultural House. This week, Josh Sauerwein, professor in the College of Business, will be our speaker, and he will share a personal story about how God worked in his life during the adoption of his sons. He will share some Scriptures from the book of James that he’s found meaningful. You are welcome to come listen and ask questions.

International chapel is designed to help us better understand what it means to be a Christian.

Commuters:

We are certain you have better uses for $15 than paying for a parking ticket! Many of you are receiving parking tickets on North Street and on Sheridan Street because you are parked outside of the blocks allowed for commuter parking.

On North Street, the allowable area is between Center Street and the entrance to Bauman. The block between Center Street and Meridian Street is reserved for staff parking. On Sheridan Street, the allowable area is the block in between Carlton Way and River Street, and it parallels the Pennington lot.

The two blocks in between River Street and Meridian Street are reserved for staff parking. There is always room in the gravel lot located at Fulton Street and Meridian Street, so security recommends that location for easy parking.

Please remember to not park in the neighborhoods surrounding the campus.

If you need another brochure, or need explanation on where to park, please come to the security office and we would be happy to go over the areas where commuters can park, and to point out the lots where there are usually empty spaces.

The lost and found tables are coming to the Bruin Den in three weeks! However, the lost and found location is crammed full, so please come to the security office to check if your lost item has been turned in before then, as we need the space – and you need your lost items.

We will be showing the film Reel Injun at Shalom this week. Reel Injun is a documentary that discusses Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans. The film will last about an hour and Drew Miller will then lead us in a talkback session.

Chapel Elective Credit is available for this event. Shalom starts at 9 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room every Thursday.

James Project is partnering with Faith In Action from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 26, to serve the needy neighbors in our community. If you are interested in helping with this, please meet in front of the Outreach Ministries office in the Bruin Den at 8:30 a.m.

We will be doing a lot of fall clean-up for elderly folks in the Newberg area. We need volunteers to go to individual houses to help with yard work (cleaning gutters, raking leaves, trimming bushes, etc.) We will also need a group to do some inside cleaning.

In addition, our men’s soccer team has home games both Saturday (vs. Whitman) and Sunday (vs. Whitworth) beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Austin Sports Complex.

The College of Business invites the university community to hear Tom Mears, chairman of The Holland, Inc., parent company to Burgerville, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation will be followed by a talk-back session from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Mears is the driving force behind Burgerville’s mission-led philosophy of “Serve with Love.” His visit is a part of the College of Business’ Executive in Residence program.

Don’t forget to join us for a free presentation, “Healthy Eating on a Budget,” on the Newberg campus tonight (Thursday). Lori Sobelson, director of corporate outreach for Bob’s Red Mill, will speak from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Sobelson, an alumna of George Fox, will share simple yet effective ways to make healthy food choices on a budget. Her presentation includes a cooking demonstration, food samples, recipe handouts and product samples. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.
