Join us for the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture this Monday, Nov. 4, when Geri Mason, assistant professor of economics at Seattle Pacific University, speaks from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our theme “State of the World.”

Mason will speak on “Microfinance in China: Challenges and Innovations,” in which she will discuss how, despite unique challenges, micro lending in China has birthed innovative solutions that have increased access to credit and other financial services for the poorest Chinese – and in turn have brightened the future of women in the country.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Deadlines for the end-of-month (non-student) payroll:

November and December holidays bring many things, including early deadlines for payroll data entry. Normally we must receive check requests and contracts by the 18th of the month to ensure they will be included in the current payroll, but we’ll need everything earlier for the next two months due to shorter processing time. We will include items received by these dates in the month-end payroll:

November: Thursday the 14th
December: Friday the 13th

As a reminder, we always need time sheets and time-off reports (complete and signed, please) by the 10th of every month for regular staff and administrators. Temporary and hourly paid staff should bring time sheets to HR on or before the 15th of the month for these two months.

Vacation: Use it, don’t lose it!

Please take a look at your vacation balance on your October pay statement. It will include accruals through October and vacation taken through September. Remember that you may carry 12 months of your accrual into 2014, so be sure to plan accordingly. Tables for calculating your accrual are on the Payroll Forms webpage, along with instructions for accessing your pay statement in MyGFU.

For others, however – such as those battling an eating disorder, or what is even more common, disordered eating – the holiday months are the most challenging times of the year. This is why Redeeming Life is here. We offer support and encouragement through the struggles as well as the victories on the road to recovery.

The College of Business invites the university community to hear Tom Mears, chairman of The Holland, Inc., parent company to Burgerville, today (Wednesday), from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation will be followed by a talk-back session from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Mears is the driving force behind Burgerville’s mission-led philosophy of “Serve with Love.” His visit is a part of the College of Business’ Executive in Residence program.

Alpha Psi Omega, the theatre honors society, will be doing “Hipster Halloween in the Den” this week – where you stay home and we bring the candy to you!

For less than a few dollars, you can order a friend a candy bar or a snack and have it delivered to their dorm/house with a special message, song or prank. You can even have it delivered by a clown. You can stop by the Bruin Den anytime this week between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and deliveries will happen nightly.

The undergraduate admissions office welcomes Kathy Rosenbohm, an alumna of George Fox, to work as operations coordinator. Kathy has worked several jobs since graduating from the university with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish in 2003, not limited to but including as a wrangler of horses and cattle (2007-10), as a personal assistant (2007-10) and as a kitchen manager (2008-10) at McGinnis Meadows Cattle & Guest Ranch in Montana; as a traffic manager at a Montana broadcasting company representing five radio stations (2011-12); and, for the past year and half, as a barista at Chapters Books & Coffee in Newberg. She lives in Dundee with her son and attends Grace Baptist Church. She is the daughter of social work professor Cliff Rosenbohm.

Vangie Pattison (Alumni and Parent Relations) is leaving George Fox on Nov. 6. She has accepted a position with Wild Canyon Games, a nonprofit in Portland.

Anna Philipsen (Advancement) is leaving George Fox on Nov. 6. In addition to spending more time managing a screen-printing and design business, she will also be starting an events business doing weddings, corporate events, etc. She is also looking forward to devoting more time to raising 8-month-old son Landon.

Paul Anderson’s (Religious Studies) college group, the Boanerges (Sons of Thunder), sang at the homecoming of Malone University Oct. 11-13, and Paul was honored as distinguished alumnus. His essay, “The Community That Raymond Brown Left Behind: Reflections on the Johannine Dialectical Situation,” was published on the Bible and Interpretation website, where his essay on “The John, Jesus, and History Project-New Glimpses of Jesus and a Bi-Optic Hypothesis” (Feb. 2010) continues to be among the most viewed essays – the most viewed last June. Also, Paul’s essay, “‘Come and See!’—Philip as a Connective Figure in the Fourth Gospel in Polyvalent Perspective,” appeared in Character Studies in the Fourth Gospel. Later this month, Paul will present a paper at the Vatican conference on The Gospels: Historical and Christological Studies on the topic, “The Jesus of History, the Christ of Faith, and the Gospel of John.”

Kenn Willson (Music) performed a solo concert at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., on Sunday, Oct. 20, and worked with pianists in a master class on Oct. 19. Kenn is also the Oregon State Music Teachers National Association competition chair. The MTNA will host a competition this Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Ross 208, Ross 210 and Bauman Auditorium. It is open to the public at no cost. The winners from this competition advance to the divisional round, and from there, to nationals. A recital at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday will feature the winners from the competition.

Rodney Birch (Library – Newberg) was re-elected by the membership to serve as vice president on the board of directors of the Association of Christian Librarians during the ACL’s 57th annual conference this summer. Rodney was also recognized for his seven years of voluntary service on the Financial Advisory Committee, which involves budget preparation and finance-related policies. Also, Rodney and Jane Scott (Library-Newberg) co-presented a workshop, “Employing Pedagogical Imagination with Open Educational Resources,” at the same annual conference, hosted at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.

Jennifer Kepler (Academic Affairs) and her husband Richard welcomed a son, Nathan Michael, on Oct. 15. He was born at Providence Newberg Hospital and weighed 7 pounds while measuring 20 inches. Nathan joins an older brother, Jonathan.
