Our own Paul Anderson visited the Vatican for a second time last month. At our Intellectual Feast today (Tuesday), Paul will talk about reading his paper at the Ratzinger Symposium on “The Gospels: Historical and Christological Research,” as well as sharing silent worship with Pope Francis, and giving the Pope a copy of his new book on radical discipleship, Following Jesus.

The event is from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 250 (lounge) and is open to the public; refreshments are provided. For more information, contact Paula Hampton at 554-2650.

There will be a place to donate funds toward typhoon survivors and those affected by the typhoon in the Philippines at the university’s Cultural Fair, scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Bruin Den. Come stop by the Filipino cultural booth to learn more about Filipino culture and donate toward afflicted families in the country.

Kipp Wilfong joins the admissions team as a graduate admissions counselor this week. Kipp will primarily serve as a counselor for the MAT and EDFL programs. He arrives from the North Dakota State College of Science, where he served as recruitment coordinator, and before that as an outreach coordinator and regional admissions representative for the University of North Dakota. Kipp earned his master’s degree in communication/educational leadership from the University of North Dakota in 2008, and taught several undergraduate courses as a graduate teaching assistant. Kipp also holds a bachelor’s degree in interpersonal communication from the University of North Dakota. He currently lives in Oregon City and attends Prince of Life.

Nancy Gard (School of Education) left the university on Oct. 31, as she is moving to South Beach, Ore., to help her husband run his automotive repair business.

Mandria Montplaisir (Development) left the university earlier this month to pursue other endeavors.

Gary Buhler’s (Art) watercolor “Morrison Steel” was accepted into the Kansas Watercolor Association’s National Competition. It is a depiction of the Morrison Bridge on-ramp just off Nato Parkway in downtown Portland.

Melanie Springer Mock (English) published an article, “The Real Complexities of the Simple Life,” in the Nov. 4 online edition of Christianity Today. It is primarily a review of Shirley Showalter’s memoir, Blush, but also an explanation of the ways an evangelical commodification of Anabaptism (mostly through Amish kitsch, Amish and Mennonite romance novels, and the like) has misrepresented the most important theological tenets of Anabaptism, including nonresistance and nonconformity. Showalter’s Blush provides a more authentic portrayal of Anabaptism because those doctrines are foundational to her faith journey.

Lori DeKruyf (Graduate Counseling) attended and co-presented with masters in school counseling students Andrea Parra and Dixie Lee at the Oregon School Counseling Association Conference in Bend Oct. 11-12. Their presentation was titled “Ethical and Legal Issues Booster Session for Professional School Counselors.”

Keith Dempsey and Lori DeKruyf (Graduate Counseling) attended and presented at the national conference of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision in Denver Oct. 17-20. Lori’s presentations were titled “Educational Leader and Mental Health Professional: Training for a Balanced School Counselor Identity” and “The Equity Imperative: School Counselor Educators, Common Core State Standards, and College and Career Readiness.” Keith’s presentation was titled “What is Your Membership Grade? Assessing Your Effectiveness as a Counselor Education Faculty Mentor from Underrepresented Populations.”

Howard Macy (Professor Emeritus, Religion) has a chapter, “Quakers and Scripture,” in the newly released The Oxford Handbook of Quaker Studies. Arthur O. Roberts (Professor at Large) also has a chapter in the same volume, “Evangelical Quakers, 1887-2010.”

Mark McLeod-Harrison (Religious Studies) published the book Incarnations of the Heart through Wipf and Stock Publishers. The book is a collection of poems and creative nonfiction essays that portray the beauty, truth and mystery of the communion of the saints. Drawn largely from the author’s life, the scenes presented and reflected point us not just toward the particularities of one person’s history but toward the incarnation of God and the “second incarnations” that we are as we live amongst those who love us.

MaryKate Morse (Seminary) published A Guidebook to Prayer: 24 Ways to Walk with God. She wrote it out of two desires. The first was to share the prayer stories of her students and others she’s met in ministry settings. The second desire was to approach prayer as a love relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Beginning in Genesis and ending in the Epistles, MaryKate presents various attributes of God and suggests a prayer experience which would help us relate to God through that attribute. The prayer experiences are tailored for individuals, prayer partners or groups.

Sophia Tegart (Music) gave a flute master class in the School of Music at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., where she worked with several undergraduate and graduate flute students on Oct. 16. Later that night, she gave a guest artist recital featuring rarely performed flute works. The concert and master class were well received and highly attended.

We have an exciting opportunity for you! LEAP Marketplace is a Senior Business Capstone start-up, and we are offering you an opportunity to make at least $15 an hour if you lend us your educational talents.

LEAP stands for Lessons, Educational Help, Advising and Preparatory. LEAP Marketplace will be a place where students K-12 can receive educational support for almost any subject from students at a local university or college. Right now we are recruiting qualified students to come on board as independent tutors.

The schedules for our tutors are dependent on their schedules and what the customer requests, so it’s very flexible! We are mainly looking for George Fox students who are science, English, math, history, or any of the core subject majors.

Also, we are looking for any music major, or anybody comfortable teaching an instrument they know really well to hop on board with us to be a music lesson instructor. Payment for this varies based on what you request.

However, we are considering bringing on board people with majors that are in less of a demand, which some people may eventually request help for (i.e. psychology, art, engineering).
