How do our bodies “speak” even before we say a word? How do groups instinctively “size you up” and decide who influences them?

These and other questions will be addressed at the College of Business’ Winter Speaker Series Event, “The Interplay of Bodies and Influence in Leadership: A New Economics of Power,” featuring MaryKate Morse from our seminary. The presentation is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Portland Center. The presentation is free, and complimentary coffee and tea will be provided.

Morse has studied the relationship of our physical bodies to influence in leadership and is the author of the book Making Room for Leadership: Power, Space and Influence. Using the historical Jesus as a model, she proposes a new economics for the use of power in social settings.

The university’s Auxiliary will present the third installment of its lunch lecture series “Reflections on Pacific College/GFC/GFU’s His­tory” at noon tomorrow (Friday) in the Cap and Gown Room.

Longtime professor and 1975 George Fox alumnus Mark Ankeny, who has also served as the dean of the College of Education at both Pacific University and Westminster College (Utah), will discuss the early history of Pacific College/George Fox College.

Among the topics to be covered are the college’s vision for a Quaker school, the presidencies of Levi Pennington (1911-1941) and Emmett Gulley (1941-1947), and how the college survived during its early period.

Cost for lunch is $8.50 and must be paid at the door. Reservations, which can be made by calling Judy Woolsey at 503-538-7314, are required.

The next installment of the series, in which David Le Shana will cover the period between 1969 and 1982, is scheduled for Friday, March 14. The series will conclude May 9 with reflections on the 1980s and 1990s from Barry Hubbell.

The university welcomes Deb Mumm-Hill this month as director of the IDEA Center, the newly created on-campus resource center dedicated to empowering students to take the next step toward exceptional life outcomes. For the past six years, she has served as Pacific Northwest director of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a national organization committed to encouraging students of all ages to engage in science and technology. Also, for the past two years, Deb has been a a co-convener launching the South Metro Salem STEM Hub and a member of Governor Kitzhaber’s STEM Student Access and Success task force, which was instrumental in passing a house bill to establish a STEM Industry Advisory Board to the governor and added $8 million to the STEM education K-12 budget. She also gained higher education experience as an undergraduate admissions program manager at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wis., in 2004-05. Debra earned a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from the University of Iowa in 1986. She lives in West Linn with husband Mike Hill, who works at OHSU. They have four children: Luke is pursuing his PhD in robotics, Mackenzie is a sophomore at Oregon State, and twin boys Eli and Tucker are juniors at Wilsonville High School. Deb’s family attends Grace Chapel in Wilsonville.

The admissions office welcomes Sarah Reid this month to serve in the newly created role of director of sports marketing. After graduating from George Fox with a degree in organizational communication in 2008, Sarah worked as a marketing and administrative assistant for a marketing firm in London before returning to the states. Since February of 2010, she has worked at Waggener Edstrom of Lake Oswego, Ore., a leading public relations firm, in a number of capacities. Most recently, she served as a senior account executive for the firm, working with clients that included Microsoft. Sarah has a self-confessed love of sports and George Fox University, for which she served as an Orientation coordinator and peer advisor during her undergraduate experience. She lives in Beaverton and attends Mosaic Church in northeast Portland.

Jamie Johnson (Spiritual Life) graduated with his PhD in Christian education from Biola University on Dec. 20. His dissertation studied faculty perceptions of collegiality and organizational culture at denominationally affiliated Christian colleges in the Pacific Northwest. Ed Higgins’ (English) poem “Santa’s Stuck” was reprinted in DM ~ Weihnachtsmarkt (Dec. 6, 2013), a Christmas Kindle book of send-up short fiction and poems from past issues of Danse Macabre. In addition, Ed’s poem “Marie Antoinette‘s Angel Food Cake Recipe” appeared in the November 2013 issue of Red River Review, and his poem “summer fields” appeared in the December 2013 issue of the New Hampshire Institute of Art’s Ayris: Art & Literary Magazine.

Paul Anderson’s (Religious Studies) essay on “The Jesus of History, the Christ of Faith, and the Gospel of John,” was published in The Gospels: Historical and Christological Research, a two-volume collection of the papers presented at the Ratzinger Symposium at the Pontifical Lateran University in October, where Paul gave a copy of his new book, Following Jesus: The Heart of Faith and Practice, to Pope Francis. Paul also presented a paper on “The Purpose(s) of the Fourth Gospel” in the Johannine Literature Section of the Society of Biblical Literature meetings held in Baltimore in November. At those meetings, Paul also contributed a review of The Oxford Handbook of Quaker Studies in the Quaker Research Group and responded to reviews of his book, Following Jesus, in the Quaker Theological Discussion Group.

In addition, he chaired a session and responded to papers in the John, Jesus, and History joint session with the Synoptic Gospels Section on the subject, “Jesus Remembered in the Gospels of John and Luke.” Paul had helped to organize a conference before those meetings at St. Mary’s Theological Seminary, celebrating the contributions of C.H. Dodd and Raymond Brown; Paul chaired a Thursday-evening plenary session regarding the ongoing legacy of Raymond Brown and also shared his own contribution. Following the SBL sessions, Paul was invited to speak in a class on early Christianity at Princeton University hosted by Elaine Pagels; she asked him to speak on how the Quaker movement sought to restore the Christian movement to its pre-Constantinian vitality.

The Bruin Den area in the SUB will have a different look when undergraduate classes resume next week. Crews are currently renovating the space to increase the eating area for students and staff and to improve the pace of service in the Bruin Den.

The water feature is being removed to allow for more space for seating, and the Executive Dining Room is being converted to a “grab and go” venue. The goal is to take some pressure off of the Bruin Den and eliminate long lines. This new area will have pre-made sandwiches, salads, beverage coolers, etc., and a cashier.

The university is also looking to turn Cap & Gown A into seating space for students and staff when it is not needed for larger group meetings.

Spring 2014 sites are currently hidden from students. When you are ready, you can share the sites with your students. Here is a quick guide on how to make the courses available: FoxTALE Making Courses Visible (Available) to Students.

If you used the FoxTALE grade book for any of your FoxTALE course sites, we recommend that you back up your 2013 Fall grade book to a spreadsheet that is saved outside of FoxTALE. See the instructions here for backing up grades. You will want to keep an archive of your course grades that cover the last five years.

If your course site is set to “Weekly” format, your course might show incorrect dates. To change the dates, go to Administration > Edit settings on the course home page. Change the course start date to the first day of your course. Scroll to the bottom of the page and save changes.

Do you have a desire to lead worship? Join us in MUSI 340, Creating, Planning, and Leading Worship. The class will help you develop your philosophy of worship and then give you tools to implement that philosophy as you learn to create, plan, and lead worship!

The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1:15 p.m. and is offered for 3 credit units.

Print Services will host a paper sale of its overstock paper. We will be selling the paper in reams of 500 sheets, with no substitutions and mix matching. These reams would be ideal for personal use or for your department for special projects.

The sale begins today (Monday) and runs through Friday, Jan. 10, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and while supplies last. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give Print Services a call at ext. 2550.

Students who are eligible to make changes to their meal plan will be able to do so starting Jan. 2, 2014, through Jan. 24, 2014.

Staff and faculty: Is your staff parking permit in shards? Did you leave it at the car wash? No longer driving that former jalopy? If any of these pertain to you, now would be a great time to go on MyGFU and update your vehicle info, and let security know if you need a new parking permit.

If you keep forgetting to switch your permit from car to car, an extra one can be purchased for only $5 cash. Did you lose yours? A mere $5 brought to the security office will procure you a new one on the spot! If yours is in tatters, just bring the remains to the security office and we can get a new one to you while you wait.

If you’ve updated your vehicle information but don’t need a new permit, just e-mail Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu so that the database can be updated and your current permit re-assigned to your new vehicle.
