The Sources of Strength Club is launching for the spring! As an upstream suicide prevention program, we strive to build relationships, help our community to connect with sources of resilience and hope, and have fun doing it.

If you’d like to get involved, or you have ideas for ways to improve wellbeing and mental health in our community, or you’d like to be trained, please let us know on this interest form.

This year, the university selected Providence Medical Group to provide the on-campus medical care for students, with medical visits charged to the student’s insurance plan. We are pleased to announce that there is now a fund to assist with “out-of-pocket” costs that exceed $75 per visit (after your insurance pays its portion of the medical charges).

If you receive a bill for more than $75 (after your insurance processes a claim), please call 503-683-1097 and they will provide financial assistance. (Note: This financial assistance is available to any student who has had a medical visit this academic year, including during the fall semester.)

Do you have any low-back pain? Our doctor of physical therapy students (along with licensed clinicians) will have a chance to evaluate your low back and set you up for success while getting you back to what you want/love to do!

If someone asked you to defend your faith, would you know how? Join the Ratio Christi (Latin for “The Reason for Christ”) meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. this afternoon (Wednesday) to learn from some of the best scholars in the field on how to better defend your Christian faith! We’ll meet in Hoover 206.

Dr. Doug Keil will present on the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. Chapel credit is provided!

If you have concerns about a traditional undergraduate student, log into Fox360 at Fox360.georgefox.edu to submit an “alert” for the student. Submit alerts for concerns in the following areas:

• Academic – Missing multiple classes; consistently poor academic performance
• Behavioral – Concerning or disruptive behaviors in or outside of class, missing work
• Emotional – Mental health concerns; unusual emotional expression
• Physical – Medical concerns; extreme changes in grooming, personal care
• Social – Personal, social, or family concerns that are affecting well-being and performance

A few notes about alerts:

• If a student is enrolled in your course but hasn’t attended class or engaged in GFD online activity, submit an alert.
• Student employee supervisors and other non-faculty are also invited to submit alerts for the reasons above.
• Alerts can be submitted any time during the semester.
• We trust those submitting an alert have attempted to make contact and either have not been able to connect with the student or believe additional outreach is needed.

The Student Support Network will assign a “case manager” to follow up with students. Case managers will do our best to give updates to faculty and employees who submit alerts or provide feedback. You are welcome to contact Jere Witherspoon (jwithers@georgefox.edu) to inquire about the status of a student.

After 22 years of service to George Fox, Janelle Freitag has decided to retire. For those of us who know Janelle, this is bittersweet. We are sad to see her go, yet excited for this next chapter in her life!

We are excited to host author Kaitlyn Schiess in chapel this Thursday, Feb. 1, at 10:50 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Her sermon will be based on her most recent book, The Ballot and the Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused in American Politics and Where We Go from Here.

All are welcome as we explore what it means to follow Christ in this upcoming election season.

Employees and students are also invited to a complimentary lunch following Kaitlyn’s chapel address, hosted by the Cultural Enterprise and the Department of History and Politics. Join us at noon that Thursday in Canyon Commons 103.

During lunch, Kaitlyn will speak on the topic of the Bible and the American presidency. Guests are invited to go through the cafeteria line and join us for the talk, which will begin shortly after noon.

Starting tomorrow (Wednesday, Jan. 31), the sidewalk south of the track will be closed for two weeks. Pedestrians journeying to Wheeler from Ross will need to cut across the football field to the gate in front of Wheeler.

The sidewalk will be closed from the Alumni Plaza to the external stairs on the south side of Wheeler while the sidewalk is being reconstructed. The reconstructed sidewalk is expected to open on Thursday, Feb. 15. Thank you for your understanding!

The university’s performing arts department is proud to welcome trumpeter, composer and educator Jason Palmer to campus for a residency and performance with the university’s Jazz Ensemble and Faculty Jazz Quartet on Friday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Admission is free for George Fox students and employees (with ID). Additional tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students and children.

The public is also invited to a presentation/masterclass on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 4:30 p.m. in Ross 208. Elementary, middle and high school students who attend the presentation will receive a free ticket to Friday night’s performance.

The recipient of numerous awards, fellowships, and competitions, Palmer has performed with Roy Haynes, Herbie Hancock, Winton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and many other jazz luminaries.

He has recorded 13 albums as a leader, performed on over 40 albums as a sideman., and toured more than 30 countries. He currently serves as the assistant professor of ensembles and brass at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

National Girls & Women in Sports Day is next Wednesday, but we’re celebrating early! We’re inviting all local youth girls teams to this Saturday’s (Feb. 3) women’s basketball game vs. Pacific Lutheran.

Tip-off is at 4 p.m., and any girls wearing their jersey will get free admission. Stick around for the men’s game immediately following the women’s contest.

Students and employees are free with a George Fox ID. Additional tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

Experience the art exhibition, “A Call to Consciences: Reflecting and Embracing the Work of Martin Luther King Jr.” at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.)

The body of work features a collaboration of George Fox graphic design majors and artwork by professor Marvin Eans. This three-part reflective exhibition will feature a timeline of Dr. King’s life and work, artwork inspired by his speeches, and a community interactive mural.
