Who is this Jesus? Called a great teacher by some and by others crazy and demon-possessed, the person of Jesus Christ has intrigued and inspired people for centuries. Yet, who is Jesus really?

This May (May 5-23) we will offer Bible 260, Life of Christ, with Sarita Gallagher. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon daily in Hoover 208. She will be leading a hands-on exploration of the teaching and person of the most influential person in history, Jesus Christ. We will examine the teachings of Jesus Oregonian-style as we visit the beautiful vineyards, farms and monasteries of the Willamette Valley.

This course, Bible 260, will fulfill the 3 credit hours General Education Requirement elective.

The financial aid office is offering a workshop to all graduating students on loan repayment. Join us on either April 2, 9, 16 or 23 at 5 p.m. in Stevens 209. The workshop will cover topics such as how to afford your loan payments and what do if you can’t, as well as loan forgiveness options.

Midterm grades are important indicators of how you are doing in your classes. While they are not a part of your permanent record they are important to pay attention to. In some cases, midterm grades represent about half your grade in a course. If you have questions, you should check with your professors. It is vital to know where you stand in each of your classes.

Midterm grades are meant to encourage you to get in touch with others: your professor, your advisor, your enrollment counselor, the Academic Resource Center.

The worst thing to do about midterm grades is to ignore them or to assume you can improve them on your own. Professors do want to meet with you. Do not hesitate to make an appointment with each of them.

Midterm grades are due by Friday, March 14. You should plan to check your midterm grades after this date.

To check your mid-term grades in MyGFU:


• Click on “Self-Service”
• Click on “Enrollment”
• Click on “View my Grades”
• Click on the correct term
• Click on the “Midterm Grades” tab

Now you need to determine what to do next: 
Contact your professors. Faculty are not required to enter midterm grades. You are advised to check with each of your professors about your status in their classes. Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D).

The last date to withdraw is Sunday, March 23.

You can usually go below being enrolled in 12 credit hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid or housing. However, you should contact representatives in these departments to be certain: Residence Life’s Dave Johnstone (djohnstone@georgefox.edu); Student Financial Services (sfs@georgefox.edu).

Withdrawal results in a “W” on your transcript but does not factor into GPA.
 If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA. Confirm any thoughts of withdrawing from classes with your advisor.

Meet with each professor, especially those teaching courses you’re struggling in. Even if your professor doesn’t post midterm grades, find out from the professor what your grade is. You can also use labs, help sessions and the ARC.

If you think you might have a learning disability, have some assessment done. Contact the Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340 or stop by their offices.

Plan well for spring semester. Contact your enrollment counselor to get advice about spring semester.

James Project is serving with Love INC this Saturday, March 15 to serve at the homes of 5 of our neighbors here in Newberg. More volunteers are needed though to help serve our neighbors. We will be meeting at the OMC office at 8:30a.m., and serve from 9a.m. to 1p.m..

We need students to help out with yard work, packing, and cleaning and organizing. Also we need people to help drive there. We serve awesome people with Love INC and it’s so fun to hear the stories of our neighbors, pray together and help them out in ways they may not be able to themselves.

Attention benefit-eligible employees: Please make sure you turn in your benefit election form by 5 p.m. Monday, March 17, to ensure that any changes you wish to make will be enrolled timely. Remember that medical and dental changes will be reflected in your premium deductions on the March 31 payroll, and all other benefit changes will show the first time on April 30.

Also remember that flexible spending enrollments don’t automatically renew, so if you want to keep that benefit next year, please submit a new form. All forms and more info are available here.

All are invited to join us for the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture this Monday, March 17, as Kent Thornburg, the M. Lowell Edwards Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, speaks from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our theme “State of the World.”

Thornburg will speak on “Capitalism and Selling Sickness in the USA,” in which he will discuss how many Americans have come to rely on free marketing products for their nutrition, how food is designed to be highly palatable, how the food that we eat is making us less healthy, and how poor health today will be passed on to future generations through epigenetic mechanisms.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

A new option has just been approved that will allow current and entering students to meet part of the general education humanities requirement.

In place of a fine arts course, a student may satisfy the fine arts general education requirement through participation in a music ensemble. To meet the requirement, a student must earn at least 0.5 credits each semester for six different semesters (i.e. students participating in more than one ensemble cannot “double count” one semester as two for the purposes of this requirement).

A student may participate in different ensembles in different semesters. During or shortly after completion of the sixth semester, the student must arrange with the music department office to complete a milestone assignment in order to finish the requirement. Eligible ensembles are: Men’s or Women’s Chorale, Concert Choir, Symphonic Band and Chehalem Symphony Orchestra. Please note that due to NASM accreditation rules, Music majors are not eligible for this general education substitution.

Any current student (except those graduating this May) able to complete six semesters of ensemble participation before graduation can take advantage of this new option.

Join us this morning (Friday) for International Chapel from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in the International Center/Cultural House. This week Alex Pia, director of international student services, will speak on God’s leading in his own life and how he has seen God working in students’ lives. You are welcome to come, listen, ask questions and be encouraged.

International Chapel is eligible for chapel elective credit. Keep in mind, the last International Chapel for spring semester will be April 18. The event is designed to help us better understand what it means to be a Christian. Everyone is invited to attend.

Want to get chapel elective credit for some hands-on experience? Come to the Community Garden Work Day this Saturday, March 15, from 1  to 3 p.m. The community garden is located behind Coffin.

We will be helping prepare the garden for the summer and having a discussion about creation care and some of the implications it has in our spiritual lives. We hope to see you there!
