On Monday, June 9, the water in the Wheeler Sports Center will be shut off from 6 to 8 a.m. This will affect the entire building and is part of the Jacuzzi tub replacement.

Also, as a reminder, the gym floor is being refinished and another coat will be applied today (Friday). It will then need a few days of curing before it is ready for use. Please stay out of the gym until Friday, June 13.

Calling all staff! Please set aside Wednesday, June 11, for our inaugural staff lunch barbecue from noon to 1 p.m.! If the weather cooperates, we will be dining al fresco in the quad. In case of inclement weather, tables will be set up in Klages for us.

During this maintenance update, Spring 2014 sites will be hidden to students. If you want to make your course site visible to students after this update, select “Edit settings” in the Course Administration block. Look for the Visible setting (located in the top General section) and change “Hide” back to “Show.” Scroll to bottom and “Save changes.”

The change in courier service will begin next week on Tuesday, June 2. The courier will be delivering one tub of mail/packages and one library book tub on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.

Delivery Schedule

• Newberg Campus: Mail and packages must be in Mail Services ready to go by 10:45 a.m.
• Portland Center: Mail and packages must be ready for courier pick-up by 11:15 a.m.

Notes

• Additional charges will be applied for packages that do not fit into our normal-sized mail tub. Departments will be responsible for the additional charge of $10 per package if the package is too large to fit into the tub or if there are too many packages to fit into the tub. Anything less than 10 pounds that does not fit into the tub will be shipped via UPS, as it is cheaper than the courier price. On the Newberg campus, Mail Services will determine the best method.

• Please make sure all packages have the sender’s and receiver’s name on it as well as a cost center. Your package will be delayed until this information is supplied.

• If you miss the courier and cannot wait until the next delivery date, it is the department’s responsibility to get their item(s) to or from the Portland Center.

• If you include the date that the package must be received, and Mail Services has too many packages to fit into the tub that day, Mail Services may be able to hold your package for the next scheduled courier delivery date. If no date is indicated, we will send the package out via UPS and charge your cost center.

• Contact Sherrie Frost at ext. 2556 or Linda Sartwell at ext. 2560 if you have items that are required to be in a locked courier pouch during transit.

May is quickly slipping away and with it the opportunity to nominate colleagues for Support Staff Member of the Year and/or Administrator of the Year. Nominations will be accepted through this Saturday, May 31.

All are welcome to attend a research seminar presented by engineering faculty candidate Dr. Hector Medina on Thursday, May 29, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in EHS 125.

Dr. Medina’s seminar will address two subjects – one related to missionary work of installing Christian radio studios around the world (25 percent of time allocated) and the other to his research, “Where do Random Rough Surfaces Fail?” (25 percent of time allocated)

Following is an abstract to the research talk:

“Roughness is ubiquitous and it is introduced on material surfaces either by spontaneous degradation, manufacturing processes, or intentionally for engineering purposes. However, under certain loading conditions, surface’s topography coupled with material’s degree of brittleness can significantly compromise the efficiency of energy production, the safety and reliability of components, and ultimately increase of costs. To the engineer, a relevant task is to be able to predict the mechanical impacts of such degradation as early as possible.

The complexity of a random configuration renders difficult the problem of analytically finding relationships between surface parameters and markers indicative of mechanical failure. Another difficulty is the reproducibility of replicates of specimens possessing random rough surfaces, for destructive testing followed by statistical analysis.

An experimental technique to produce highly controlled replicates of random rough surfaces (including modeling of degradation growth) was developed and used to experimentally and statistically solved the aforementioned problem. An empirical relationship was derived between stress concentration factor and the root-mean-square roughness (RMS) and auto correlation length (ACL) of a slightly roughened surface.

In order to strengthen our results, an analytical solution was sought by setting up and solving a boundary-value problem involving traction-free random rough surfaces, using a perturbation method, assuming elastic and isotropic conditions. The exact analytical solution was found which agrees very well with experimental and Finite Element Analysis results.”
