It’s now just over a week before our 16th annual Serve Day! On Wednesday, Sept. 3, we will send out more than 1,800 employees and students to serve over 100 sites in Newberg and the surrounding area.
Employees will receive their Serve Day assignments shortly. If you have any questions about your assignment, let Trisha Elizarde know by emailing serveday@georgefox.edu. Students who live on campus will receive their assignments from their RAs. Additional information will be available in living areas.
Employees are encouraged to park on the gravel lot (down Meridian Street near Fulton Street) on Serve Day unless they were specifically assigned to drive to a serve site. If so, a parking lot/departure site is assigned, which can be found on their email about Serve Day. Stevens will be used for some organizations that are coming to campus to provide transportation.

In light of creation care and sustainability, we would like to encourage students and faculty to bring their own water bottles on Serve Day (Wednesday, Sept. 3) in order to reduce the plastic waste at the end of the day. We ask leaders to collect and bag the plastic water bottles that do end up being used so they can be taken to FISH, where they are turned in for 5 cents each.
Let’s do our part to serve the community and the world, even as we stay hydrated on Serve Day. Thank you!

Welcome to a new academic year! Here are a few things to help you start the year off well!
- Use your new, empty 2014 Fall sites as the sites in which you will teach. You may import content from another course site. See the instructions here for importing.
- 2014 Fall sites are currently hidden from students. When you are ready, you can share the sites with your students. Here is a quick guide on how to make the courses available: FoxTALE Making Courses Visible to Students.
- If your course site is set to Weekly format, your course might show incorrect dates. To change the dates, go to Administration> Edit settings on the course home page. Scroll down to the course start date and change it to the first day of your summer course. Scroll to the bottom of the page and “Save changes.â€
- If you used the FoxTALE grade book for any of your FoxTALE course sites, we recommend that you back up your 2014 Summer grade book to a spreadsheet that is saved outside of FoxTALE. See the instructions here for backing up grades. You will want to keep an archive of your course grades that cover the last five years.

Nearly 1,200 of you will have your parking permits assigned and awaiting you at Mail Services upon your arrival to campus, but around 800 students have neglected to either register their vehicles OR to check the box on MyGFU that they are NOT bringing a vehicle to campus.
Every student MUST do one or the other by the Add/Drop date of Friday, Sept. 5, or a $40 non-refundable fee will be charged to your student account. We know you’d much rather have that money to spend on books, etc., so please do not delay in getting this taken care of immediately.
Please contact security at 503-554-2090 if you have a vehicle circumstance outside of the box so that we can help to find a solution that works.

If you are new or returning to George Fox this fall, remember that you can begin or continue your studies at the piano! There are two ways to do this:
- Enroll in MUSI 135 AÂ if you are a beginner or have not studied piano recently. Enroll in MUSI 135B if you have studied in the recent past. Both of these sections are open to non-music majors. These options are classes and there is no fee. They are both offered for 1 credit each semester and are repeatable.
- Enroll in MUSA 105PN for .5 credit. This is a private lesson with the piano faculty once per week. This class is open to non-majors as well as majors. It is repeatable each semester (there is a fee added if you choose this option).

Commuters: If you live within the Good Neighbor Zone (roughly two blocks around campus), please do NOT register your vehicle on MyGFU, as a commuter permit will be automatically assigned to you.
In order to get a gratis Neighborhood Permit that identifies you as actually living in the neighborhood, you will need to bring proof of residency with you to the security office, where you will register and receive your Neighborhood Permit. Proof of residence can include a letter from your landlord with ALL of the residents’ names on it, a bill with your name and that address on it or a lease agreement with all of the residents’ names, etc.
This helps your neighbors and our security officers to know that you do indeed live close to campus, and your car can be parked there. It does not grant you access to park on campus, however, so if you still want a commuter permit, please contact Nadine Kincaid in security and bring the proof of residence to the security office so we can issue you both a commuter permit and your Neighborhood Permit.
Questions? Wonder if your residence is within the Good Neighbor Zone? Just give us a call at 503-554-2090 or email nkincaid@georgefox.edu.
The lines are very long the first week of school, so please try to take care of this as soon as possible!
