Join us for activities during homecoming weekend this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18! Registration and information will be set up in the Stevens Center (Duke) Atrium from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 18. Registration is also available online at homecoming.georgefox.edu.

This year, we are celebrating homecoming and Family Weekend on back-to-back weekends. Stay tuned for information on Family Weekend Oct. 24-25.

Here is a rundown of homecoming events Oct. 17-18 …

On Friday, we will host a Classic Bruins Supper (5-7 p.m. in Cap and Gown Room); a reunion for Dayspring members (6-8 p.m. at Friendsview); a men’s soccer game against Willamette (6 p.m.); and a jazz concert featuring New York-based drummer Matt Wilson (7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium).

On Saturday, morning events include a Dayspring reunion breakfast (9-10 a.m.) and concert (10 a.m.), a department open house and networking gathering (9:30 a.m.), and class reunions (for the classes of 1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004) from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The afternoon/evening schedule includes a women’s soccer game against Lewis & Clark (noon), a football game against Puget Sound (1:30 p.m.), an Alumni and Sports Hall of Fame Awards event (5-8 p.m.), and a “World’s Got Talent” variety show (8 p.m.).

This Monday, Oct. 20, author and peace worker David Hartsough will be talking about his new book Waging Peace: Global Adventures of a Lifelong Activist from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Cap & Gown A.

Hartsough is a Quaker and serves as the director of the San Francisco-based Peaceworkers. He is also cofounder of the Nonviolent Peaceforce. Come join us for a lunch hour talk and conversation moderated by Tom Head, professor of economics at George Fox. The event is sponsored by the Center for Peace and Justice.

Getting the munchies around 10 p.m.? Skipped dinner? Live off campus and too busy to cook? Need a study break?

Starting this week, the Bruin Den will reopen for late-night snacks and great beverages from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Thursdays to satisfy your your evening cravings. Cheeseburgers, fries, chicken strips and nachos, along with all your favorite Starbucks coffee drinks, will now be available.

Join us in the Bruin Den for our biggest-ever Homecoming tailgate luncheon special on the quad this Friday, Oct. 17, as we welcome back our alumni and prepare for the big football game against the University of Puget Sound on Saturday, Oct. 18.

We’ll be selling some of the tastiest pulled-pork sandwiches with all the fixings out of our Groovy Bruin food trailer and doing free drawings for some great prizes throughout lunch. We’ll be serving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so come on out for a tasty lunch!

Chapel will be on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 10:50 a.m.in Bauman. Guest speaker Rick McKinley serves as the lead pastor at Imago Dei in Portland. His books include Jesus in the Margins, Advent Conspiracy, This Beautiful Mess, and A Kingdom Called Desire. A book table will be set up after chapel where you can purchase his books. Chapel credit is available.

Shalom will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 9 p.m. in the Cap & Gown Room. The IDEA center will be sharing on the topic “Focus on Purpose: Discover Your Calling”. Rick Muthiah and others from the IDEA Center will lead an interactive exploration of self in relation to purpose, major, career, and future. Bring a laptop if you can! Chapel elective credit is available.

Evening chapel will be this Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 7p.m. in Bauman.  Come listen to John Mark McMillan, who is hailed for his concise, poetic and often raw lyrics, with roots in Dylan, Kerouac and Springsteen, but haunted by the presence of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Among his hits is, “How He Loves.” Come worship with us! Chapel credit is available.

Greenroom worship will be on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 9:30 p.m. in the Foxhole.

The city of Newberg is seeking applications from citizens to serve on a commission or committee. This is an opportunity to serve and be part of the decision-making team governing your community.

Come to Stevens 209 Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. to hear professors and recent graduates talk about the process of applying to Graduate school, students’ options for that and experiences of life, work, and grad school after Fox.

Valley Repertory Theatre, a local nonprofit theatre company, will kick off its fourth season of live theatre with the production The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez. The play opened Oct. 10, and all performances will be at the Newberg Masonic Lodge, 402 E. Sheridan St., in Newberg.

In recognition of the Civil War’s 150th anniversary, Valley Rep is hosting a special lecture and performance on Friday, Oct. 17, when Kerry Irish, professor of American history at George Fox, will introduce the play with a special historical presentation at 7:30 p.m., with the performance immediately following. There is no additional charge for this pre-show event.

The show runs for two more weekends. Evening (7:30 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25. Matinee (2 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 19 and 26. Doors open at 7:10 p.m. and 1:40 p.m., respectively.

The Sunday matinee performance on Oct. 19 is “Pay What You Will.” More information can be found at valleyrep.org.

The International Center is looking for students to represent their countries/cultures during our annual Cultural Celebration Week! Students will have a budget to set up a booth at the Bruin Den on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Christian C. Sahner, author of Among the Ruins: Syria Past and Present (Oxford University Press, 2014), will speak on campus at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in Hoover 103. The campus community is invited to attend at no charge.

Sahner’s lecture, “The End of Christianity in Syria?,” will explore the roots of Christianity in Syria and seek to place the current predicament in historical perspective. The William Penn Honors Program is sponsoring this lecture, and a reception for prospective students interested in the honors program will follow. In addition, a special “Visit Day for the Honors Program” is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 31. Please email honors@georgefox.edu if you would like more information or have any questions.

A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, Sahner is currently completing his doctorate at Princeton, focusing on relations between Muslims and Christians in the formative period after the Arab conquests.

Join us tonight (Monday) for the next installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features Miriam Adeney, associate professor of world Christian studies at Seattle Pacific University.

Adeney will present “Jesus’ People in the Muslim World: Followers of Jesus, Christian and Muslim,” in which she will discuss the diverse views of Jesus and the diverse kinds of followers of Christ.
