Valley Repertory Theatre, a local nonprofit theatre company, will kick off its fourth season of live theatre with the production The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez. The play opened Oct. 10, and all performances will be at the Newberg Masonic Lodge, 402 E. Sheridan St., in Newberg.
In recognition of the Civil War’s 150th anniversary, Valley Rep is hosting a special lecture and performance on Friday, Oct. 17, when Kerry Irish, professor of American history at George Fox, will introduce the play with a special historical presentation at 7:30 p.m., with the performance immediately following. There is no additional charge for this pre-show event.
The show runs for two more weekends. Evening (7:30 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25. Matinee (2 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 19 and 26. Doors open at 7:10 p.m. and 1:40 p.m., respectively.
The Sunday matinee performance on Oct. 19 is “Pay What You Will.†More information can be found at valleyrep.org.

Christian C. Sahner, author of Among the Ruins: Syria Past and Present (Oxford University Press, 2014), will speak on campus at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in Hoover 103. The campus community is invited to attend at no charge.
Sahner’s lecture, “The End of Christianity in Syria?,” will explore the roots of Christianity in Syria and seek to place the current predicament in historical perspective. The William Penn Honors Program is sponsoring this lecture, and a reception for prospective students interested in the honors program will follow. A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, Sahner is currently completing his doctorate at Princeton, focusing on relations between Muslims and Christians in the formative period after the Arab conquests.

In light of the fact more thefts have been reported on campus this week, security services reminds you to keep your valuables secure or take them with you. Just this week, backpacks were stolen from the Wheeler Sports Center and a bike from the Villa Academic Complex. Some items have been discovered and returned to the victims.
Also, please be sure to report any unusual activity to security right away so we can respond and investigate. You may do so by calling 503-554-2090 or in person at the Security Services House.
Reported Offense: A theft from one gym bag was reported to security services on Tuesday night, Oct. 7, and occurred in the Wheeler Sports Center by the racquetball courts. Three backpacks were taken from the sports office in Wheeler around noon on Oct. 9, and a bicycle was also taken from the Villa Academic Center bike racks between noon and 1 p.m.
Suspects: Unknown at this time. It can be assumed that the possibility of other thefts continue to exist. Security is working with the Newberg-Dundee Police Department on this situation.
This notice is being given in compliance with the “Timely Notice” provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998.
