The university community is invited to explore portions of the St. John’s Bible at a special presentation from 2:30 to 5 p.m. today (Friday) in the Stevens Center’s Duke Atrium. The project began in 1998 at Saint John’s Abbey and St. John’s University, which commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible.
Come see a work of art that unites an ancient Benedictine tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium. The Gospels and Acts will be on display, along with several individual art pieces from the series.
In addition, Brad Neary, representative for the project, and Paul Anderson, professor of biblical studies at George Fox, will present short talks on topics related to the Bible and its artwork.

Staff Development Conference is right around the corner. This fall’s half-day event will be a time of learning and celebration of the investment George Fox staff make – sowing, watering and reaping – in the lives of young men and women. Staff .5 and above are required to attend, but you’ll be glad you’re there to harvest encouragement and inspiration.
The conference is scheduled from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Mountain Park Church, 40 McNary Parkway Dr., in Lake Oswego. More details will be forthcoming.
All George Fox students and employees are welcome to attend the student life discussion series, Symposium: A Forum for Uncommon Conversations. The series will run three weeks in a row, starting today (Thursday) from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in EHS 102.
Our first topic will be “Convicted Civility: Pursuing Christ in Our Conversations,” and will feature panelists Ron Mock, Terry Steele, Sarita Gallagher, Jamie Noling-Auth and Michael Harris. The discussion Thursday will explore the question, “What does it mean to be a person with strong convictions, while also honoring and respecting others who might not agree with you?” Bring a friend and come join in the discussion!

If you received federal loans while attending George Fox, it is a federal requirement that you complete exit loan counseling. The financial aid office is offering workshops to all graduating students on loan repayment starting in November. The workshop will cover topics such as how to afford your loan payments, what to do if you can’t afford them, and loan forgiveness.

The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed again this Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This means that the gym, racquetball courts, dance room and locker rooms will be off limits.
The fitness center will remain open, but please use the hallway entrance near the tennis courts on the field level.
The campus community is invited to the next installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Oct. 27, in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features Lisa Ohlen Harris, author of the Middle East memoir Through the Veil.
Harris will present “My Muslim Sisters,” in which she will share glimpses into the lives of several Muslim women who befriended her during the years she lived in Jordan and Syria. The same session is presented from 5 to 6 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Midterm grades are important indicators of how you are doing in your classes. While they are not a part of your permanent record, they are important to pay attention to.
In some cases, midterm grades represent about half your grade in the course. If you have questions, you should check with your professors. It is vital to know where you stand in each of your classes.
Midterm grades are meant to encourage you to get in touch with others: your professor, your advisor, your CAP Coach (Career & Academic Planning Coach) and/or the Academic Resource Center.
The WORST thing to do about midterm grades is to ignore them or to assume you can improve them on your own. Professors DO want to meet with you. Do not hesitate to make an appointment with each of them.
Midterm grades are due by Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014. You should plan to check your midterm grades after this date.

Now you need to determine what to do next:
 Contact your professors. Faculty are not required to enter midterm grades. You are advised to check with each of your professors about your status in their class.
Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D).
The last date to withdraw is Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014.
You can usually go below being enrolled in 12 credit hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid or housing. However, you should contact representatives in these departments to be certain:
Withdrawal results in a “W” on your transcript but does not factor into GPA.
 If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA. Confirm any thoughts of withdrawing from classes with your advisor. Meet with each professor, especially those teaching courses you’re struggling in. Even if your professor doesn’t post midterm grades, find out from the professor what your grade is.
Meet with your advisor to discuss options. Use labs, help sessions and the ARC.
If you think you might have a learning disability, have some assessment done. Contact the Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340 or stop by their office on South River Street.
Plan well for spring semester. Contact your CAP Coach (Career & Academic Planning Coach) to get advice about spring semester.
