The university community is invited to the Chehalem Cultural Center for two events in the coming week. On Thursday, Dec. 4, the center will host the opening reception of “The Art of Illumination,” an exhibit featuring the Saint John’s Bible and accompanying prints from the Heritage Edition. The reception is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m., and the exhibit will remain up through Dec. 19.

Next week, on Thursday, Dec. 11, a “Think Again Conversation” facilitated by professors Paul Anderson and Mark Terry will take place in the center’s Parrish Gallery beginning at 7:30 p.m. The discussion will focus on “The Art of Illumination” pieces.

This is a reminder that the MLRC will be staying open until midnight Monday through Thursday nights for the last two weeks of the fall semester (Dec. 1-4 and Dec. 8-11).

Come this Friday, Dec. 5, to the Health and Human Performance department symposium featuring senior students’ research projects. They’ve been hard at work through the term gathering data in the following areas: injury prevention; strength versus power training; motion analysis; warm-up of youth soccer players and athletic performance; and hamstring flexibility.

Join us tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. for our final chapel service of the semester! Our pastoral team – Jamie Noling-Auth, Jamie Johnson and Rusty St. Cyr – will be leading Advent services in three different locations: Wood-Mar Auditorium, Cap and Gown, and Hoover 105. Each of these locations will have the same chapel service.

This Thursday, Dec. 4, senior artists will host the opening of their Senior Thesis Exhibits in both the Minthorne and Lindgren galleries. Come out to support our student artists!

Phyllis Jean Fulton, presenting “In Essence of the Feminine,” and Erin Kays, presenting “This State of Mind,” will give their artist talks in Lindgren Gallery shortly after 5 p.m. Following their talks we will move to the Minthorne Gallery to hear Kate Wilder and Netta Duncan, presenting “Fallow,” give their artist talks.

The university’s College of Engineering invites you to its Winter Engineering Expo this Thursday, Dec. 4, in Wood-Mar Auditorium and EHS Atrium. Following is the schedule:

1-2 p.m. – Air Engine Displays (EHS Atrium)
Freshmen students display their working engines

2-3:30 p.m. – Wobble-Off Competition (Wood-Mar Auditorium)
Freshmen engineering students compete with their air engines for maximum speed and coast, minimum pressure, cost efficiency and aesthetics

International Justice Mission (IJM) is a club on campus that seeks to promote justice for the oppressed. We will meet today (Tuesday) from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the International/Cultural House.

We will be preparing for our January events by making prayer bracelets. Come join us as we get to know one another and pray for these issues. Tea and snacks will be provided, so please bring a mug if you have one!

You have one last chance to see our men’s and women’s basketball teams play before Christmas break starts.

Get in the holiday spirit tonight (Tuesday) and wear your ugliest Christmas sweater to the women’s game against Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. We’ll have prizes and competitions for the best dressed.

Our men’s team takes the court tomorrow (Wednesday) against Portland Bible at 7:30 p.m., and we’ll be doing a “Silent Night” game. Everyone in the stands will be silent until the 10th point is scored, and then we’ll go wild! Be as loud as possible! Bonus points and extra gold stars for students who show up in their pajamas.

On Thursday, Dec. 18, George Fox University libraries will transition to a new library system. We are in the fourth and final group as the 37-member Orbis Cascade Alliance transitions from stand-alone library systems to one shared library system.

The new system will improve the research experience for our students and faculty and allow us to better manage our resources. More information can be found at this link.

Mail Services will distribute your mail to your campus mailbox during the Christmas break, and it will be waiting for you when you come back in January.

Your packages will be stored at University Mail Services until you come back to campus and will be available for pick-up when you return. No packages will be returned over the Christmas break.

Jim Steele (Business) has been elected to a second three-year term on the board of directors for the Human Resources Certification Institute, the leading certification provider for the global HR profession with 135,000 HR professionals in 100-plus countries. In addition, he’s been named secretary-treasurer elect for 2015-16. The secretary-treasurer is an officer of the nonprofit corporation and also serves on its executive committee.

Randy Woodley (Seminary) wrote an article, “How to Acknowledge Native Americans this Thanksgiving,” that appeared in online issues of Time and The Tufts Daily in late November.

Kevin T. Jones (Communication Arts) presented seven papers at the National Communication Association’s annual convention in Chicago Nov. 20-23. He presented the paper “Walking on Eggshells: Exploring Creativity Versus Crisis Management as Pedagogy for High Anxiety in the Basic Course,” in which he shared the insights and activities he uses in the classroom to reduce communication anxiety. Next, Kevin presented “The Past, Present and Promising Future of the Undergraduate Capstone Course at Small Colleges and Universities,” which featured his research on the effectiveness of service learning in the senior capstone course. He followed that with a presentation on “Demonstrating Effective Audience Analysis through Analysis of Presidential Crisis Rhetoric Speeches,” using Ronald Reagan’s Challenger disaster speech and George Bush’s Columbia disaster speech to argue how Reagan used effective audience analysis to turn a negative event into a positive event while Bush engaged poor audience analysis and failed to move his audience.

Kevin then presented “Mortification and Apodiorizo: Re-framing Apologia,” in which he presented an image management theory he created based on Tiger Woods’ 2010 sex scandal speech. Next, Kevin served on a panel and presented “Who is Responsible for Student Learning,” in which he shared his pedagogical strategies to engage students more in the learning process in each course. He then presented the paper “The Presence of Communication Learning Outcomes in General Education Assessment.” Finally, as the former president of the Religious Communication Association, Kevin was invited to present a paper titled “Past Presidents’ Reflections for the Present and Future,” in which he shared his perspective on his tenure as president and what the future holds for the organization. Kevin was also invited to serve as the chair and respondent to a panel titled “Bringing Insights of Interpersonal Communication Theory into Conversation with Other Subfields.”
