Andy Crouch, executive editor of Christianity Today, will present a free lecture titled “True Power in a World of False Images” on Monday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. The university community is invited to attend.
Crouch is the author of Playing God: Redeeming the Gift of Power, published in October 2013. His book Culture Making: Recovering Our Creative Calling won Christianity Today’s 2009 Book Award for Christianity and Culture and was named one of the best books of 2008 by Publishers Weekly, Relevant, Outreach and Leadership. Crouch serves on the governing boards of Fuller Theological Seminary and Equitas Group, a philanthropic organization focused on ending child exploitation in Haiti and Southeast Asia.
He is also a senior fellow of the International Justice Mission’s IJM Institute. His writing has appeared in Time, The Wall Street Journal and several editions of Best Christian Writing and Best Spiritual Writing. He studied classics at Cornell University and received an MDiv (summa cum laude) from Boston University School of Theology.

Join us tomorrow (Thursday) for a free presentation featuring guest speaker Nicholas Aroney, professor of constitutional law at the TC Beirne School of Law at the University of Queensland, Australia. Aroney will speak on the subject “Freedom of Religion as an Associational Right Under the Australian Constitution – with U.S. Comparisons†from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in Hoover 105.
Aroney, who is also an Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the Centre for Public, International and Comparative Law, has published multiple books and articles on a variety of subjects, including federalism, constitutionalism, religious liberty, Sharia law and Christian political thought. His presentation is co-sponsored by the George Fox University politics program and the William Penn Honors Program.

We are seeking applications for the American Enterprise Institute’s (AEI) Executive Council Reading Group. The Reading Group will explore the evolving class structure in the United States. Nate Peach will lead the group through reading Coming Apart by Charles Murray. A free copy of the book will be provided to all participants. The Reading Group will meet regularly during spring semester.
The first meeting will be Thursday, Feb. 5, from 4 to 5 p.m. (location to be determined). Meetings will be held every other Thursday at the same time. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

A Claremont native, Rebecca Hamm received her B.A. from California Polytechnic University and her M.F.A. from the Claremont Graduate University. In addition to producing and exhibiting her artwork throughout the region, she is the Program Director for the First Street Gallery Art Center in Claremont and is an adjunct Art Instructor at 3 local universities.
Rebecca’s work presents points where nature overcomes and reclaims –gradually or dramatically– human constructs. Rebecca creates energetic, abstracted visions that overflow with color and hidden life. At a distance, the stream emerges and the rock forms in a constant state of flux. The serenity of nature is simultaneously presented as mysterious and comforting; fascinating and awe striking; terrifying and instructive.

Lynn Andrews (Advancement) recently left the university. She had this to say about her departure: “It is with much sadness that I let you know I am resigning for personal reasons … to slow the pace of my life and take better care of my health. It is my hope and belief that the advancement team will continue to build on the work we’ve accomplished together. Thank you for welcoming me with open hearts and minds. I know that God has a plan for each one of us, and I am very grateful He caused our paths to cross!” The university will seek a replacement for the position. In the meantime, Scott Philips is providing advancement leadership on an interim basis.
Sarah King (Enrollment and Marketing/Analytics) has left the university after seven years of service. She was hired by Nike to work as a senior planning business analyst with the company’s emerging markets team.
Keith Schneider’s (Student Life) last day at George Fox is this Friday, Jan. 30. A farewell reception for him is set from 3 to 4 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Stevens Center’s Duke Atrium. He has worked at George Fox since the summer of 2007.

Lori DeKruyf (Counseling) recently received the 2014 Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Publication Award in recognition of contributions made to counselor education and supervision literature. Among the contributions were collaborative pieces, with Richard Auger from the University of Minnesota, Mankato, and Shannon Trice-Black from the College of William and Mary, for a two-part special issue for Professional School Counseling, the flagship journal for the American School Counseling Association. Their co-editing culminated in 14 peer-reviewed articles contributing to the professional literature on the role school counselors play in meeting students’ mental health needs.
Chengping Zhang’s (Business) paper, “Incorporating Powerful Excel Tools into Finance Teaching,†was published in the Fall/Winter 2014 issue (Vol. 40, No. 3/4) of the Journal of Financial Education. The paper demonstrates how to effectively use Excel tools to teach key finance concepts, such as financial statement analysis, time value of money, stock and bond valuation, capital budgeting, portfolio theory and financial derivatives.
Ed Higgins’ (English) poem, “Poem for the betraying Lover and his new Love,†was published in the Pea River Journal (Vol. 3, Fall 2014). In addition, his flash-fiction piece “Couth†appeared in the recent online British journal The Short Humor Site on Dec. 26.

Longing for a low-key, low-pressure night full of literary laughs? Then sigh no more: “Bad Poetry Night†is coming on Friday, Feb. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Lemmons 8.
“Bad poetry†doesn’t just mean your middle school love poems (though it certainly could include them). It could be a dramatic reading of a song, a Facebook post, or a series of tweets. It could be a truly awful poem you stumbled across on the Internet. It could be spoken word (or something akin to it). Or it could simply be a “bad†reading of a poem traditionally thought to be “good.â€
The sign-up sheet will be posted in the Minthorne mail room. The deadline to sign up is Friday, Feb. 13. The event is being sponsored by the George Fox chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English Honor Society.
