On Monday, Jan. 19, George Fox students, staff and faculty will, for the sixth straight year, join with more than 1,000 students from Portland-area colleges and universities to commemorate the life, ideals and ministry of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a “day on” of voluntary service and reflection.
The MLK Day of Service is a collaborative effort of Portland-area universities and colleges facilitated by the Oregon Campus Compact, and we are always proud of how well George Fox is represented each year at this event. Annually, it is the largest mobilization of college students in the country to serve on MLK Day!
Volunteers will gather at Concordia University and serve in the Cully neighborhood of northeast Portland. Transportation from George Fox will be provided.
This year’s theme is “Healthy Schools, Thriving Communities.” In order to receive a free T-shirt and participate in this day of serving activities you must register at this link before Jan. 9, 2015.

On Friday, Jan. 16, George Fox will host the Oregon Symphony in its 28th appearance in Newberg at 8 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. The concert is free to George Fox employees – a gift from George Fox board member Ken Austin, who cofounded A-dec with his late wife Joan.
The university has been provided with a limited number of tickets for its employees. These tickets are separate from those to be issued by the Newberg Area Chamber of Commerce to the general public.
George Fox employees (halftime and over) may pick up their tickets – limit two per employee – on a first-come, first-served basis starting Monday, Jan. 5, at 9 a.m. at the advancement office. Phone reservations (503-554-2134) will not be taken except for employees at the Portland Center.
On Monday, Jan. 12, beginning at 9 a.m., any remaining tickets (again, a limit of two per person) will be available – also on a first-come, first-served basis – to those who sign up on a waiting list. If you find you will not be able to attend the concert, please return your tickets for another employee to use.

On Sunday, Dec. 21, the Newberg Fire Department will be doing a “burn-to-learn” on the Wilhite and Lyda houses, at 1419 E. North St. and 607 N. Villa Road, respectively.
Fire crews will arrive at the site around 6:30 to 7 a.m. and will start with the Wilhite House. It will go slow at first as they do various exercises involving small fires inside the house, but they expect to let it go and be fully ablaze by about 11 am. They will do the Lyda House similarly in the afternoon. The houses are being burned down to prepare the area for the construction of a new residence hall.
