Wheaton graduate professor on campus Tuesday

Robert Gallagher, chair of the Intercultural Studies Department at Wheaton College Graduate School (Wheaton, Ill.), will be on campus Tuesday, April 14, to talk with interested students about Wheaton’s graduate programs (intercultural studies, psychology, biblical and theological studies, evangelism, biblical archaeology, education).

Students who would like to find out more about Wheaton’s graduate offerings are invited to talk with Gallagher from 10 a.m. to noon in the Bruin Den.

Melissa Thomas performs with Jazz Ensemble tonight

The Jazz Ensemble will perform its annual Spring Concert tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. The concert will feature George Fox’s own Melissa Thomas with the big band. Admission is free. You won’t want to miss it!

Registration still open for tomorrow’s missiological society conference

George Fox University will host the annual Northwest Regional Conference of the Evangelical Missiological Society tomorrow (Saturday). The theme for this year is “Controversies in Mission.” Topics will be wide and varied, from women’s roles in missions to global partnerships, from Bible translation to ethics of business as mission. ​ This is a day-long Saturday event (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.); registration fee is $50, with students paying a much-reduced $15 for the day. All meetings will be in the Hoover Academic Building.

Student artist hosts interactive exhibition in Brougher

Come support student artist Yixuan Pan by turning out for Pan’s solo exhibition “Goodnight Babies” in Studio 3 of Brougher Hall. It is an interactive exhibition, and you can trade her artwork with things you have. First come, first serve!

Don’t miss the last staff lunch of the year Monday

Calling all staff! We know you are crazy busy, but you have to eat lunch anyway, so come and share lunch with fellow staff! The last staff lunch of the academic year is this Monday, April 13, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room.

The theme is “Getting To Know You,” and we will have several staff share about some interesting things they do outside of George Fox. We’ll also have special music during lunch. Cost is only $3, and since Bon Appetit needs an approximate count, please email Nadine Kincaid (nkincaid@georgefox.edu) if you can come by end of day today (Friday).

Come hear from C.S. Lewis expert tonight in Hoover 105

Don’t forget the lecture tonight (Thursday) by scholar Jason Lepojärvi, who will present “C.S. Lewis’s Famous Disagreement with Augustine on Love” at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Lepojärvi is a junior research fellow in theology at St. Benet’s Hall, Oxford, and a former president of the Oxford C.S. Lewis Society. Born to a Canadian mother and a Finnish father, he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Helsinki. More details about him can be found here. The lecture is sponsored by the Office of the President and the William Penn Honors Program.

Do you know a high school student who may be interested in the William Penn Honors Program? An honors program reception will be held immediately following the lecture. Additionally, a special visit day event will be held on April 10 during Bruin Preview.

George Fox staff and faculty, the university pastors warmly invite you to attend the undergraduate baccalaureate service on Friday, May 1, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Baccalaureate is a commissioning service for our graduating seniors and is the opening event of the graduation festivities.

University hosts three concerts today through Sunday

Come support our student musicians this week as they perform in three concerts in Bauman Auditorium over four days. Tonight (Thursday), a Spring Chamber Concert is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Tomorrow night (Friday), a Spring Jazz Concert will be performed, and on Sunday, April 12, we’ll host the Spring Chehalem Symphony Orchestra Concert at 3 p.m. All three events are free.

Here is a short summary of each concert:

Spring Chamber Concert: The university’s Women’s Chorale (“Homeland”, “Lay Earth’s Burden Down”), Handbell Ringers (“Homeward Bound,” “Psalm 24,” “Spirit Wind”), Keyboard Ensemble (“Rondo,” “Distant Dream,” “Four Landler,” “Hungarian Dance No. 6,” “Blues Threesome”) and Chamber Choir (“Cantate Domino,” “Vide Cantas Credas,” “I’ve Been in the Storm So Long,” “The Battle of Jericho”) will perform.

Spring Jazz Concert: The school’s Jazz Ensemble will perform four songs to start (“Cool School Dropout,” “Always and Forever,” “Told You So,” “Chet’s Call”), then be joined by vocalist Melissa Thomas for five more (“They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Unpack Your Adjectives,” “All of Me.”)

Chehalem Symphony Orchestra Concert: Selections to be performed include “Bell Song — Ah! Où va jeune indoue from Lakmé,” “The Storyteller: Three Scenes for Viola and Orchestra,” “Fantaisie for Flute and Orchestra” and “Symphony #41 in C, K.511 ‘Jupiter'”.

Run & Rave Color Run around campus happening today

The Run & Rave Color Run is happening today (Friday) at 7 p.m.! Run, walk, bike or skip your way through a one-mile course around campus while throwing colored powder and having a paint fight.

Afterwards, meet back at the Amphitheater for a dance from 8 to 10 p.m.! There will be white tank tops, food and extra color packets for sale, with proceeds going toward funding the Romania Serve Trip. The run will begin and end at the Amphitheater. Wear white, leave bright!

Student Concert is tonight

Philosophy course on ‘Heaven and Hell’

Did God create hell? Does divine justice require that there be a hell? Does divine love require that God triumph over all evil (so that there is no hell)? Do the saints in heaven have free will? If they do, why do they not sin? How should we think about heaven, after all?

Professor Mark McLeod-Harrison is offering a philosophical examination of the notions of heaven and hell, PHIL 285/485, during the fall 2015 semester.

Today (Thursday) is the last day we’ll be collecting summer address info!

Please take care of this today so your info can be put into the computer system by finals week.

  • Place: Table by the ASC offices in the Bruin Den
  • Time: 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Why: Your mailbox will be closed the last day of finals.

You have two options for your mail over the summer:

  1. Request to keep your mailbox open all or part of the summer
  2. Give us an address where we can forward you mail over the summer. (We will close your mailbox and re-open the same mailbox for you 3 weeks before school starts in the fall.)

Have a dress to donate to a good cause?

The Dress Drive is looking for those who can donate formal dresses for the organization Adorned in Grace in downtown Portland. They are a boutique run by volunteers who help teach girls, at-risk of becoming trafficked, seamstress skills to have better means in finding employment. These formal dresses will aid our community in preventing trafficking.

Little Bruins Spring Party is Friday

The Office of Spiritual and Intercultural Life is looking for volunteers to be “Buddies” to Little Bruins whose “Big Bruins” can’t make it to the party.

The party is Friday, April 10, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Stevens Center atrium. Volunteers would help organize fun games and a scavenger hunt.

Symposium focuses on ‘The Global Gospel: Student Stories of Faith’

This week’s topic in the spring student life discussion series, “Symposium: A Forum for Uncommon Conversations,” is “The Global Gospel: Student Stories of Faith.”

This morning (Thursday), student panelists from a variety of different countries will share their personal stories of faith and explain how they view the gospel through the lens of their culture. All George Fox students and employees are welcome to attend this discussion from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in EHS 102 to hear from student panelists Faith Kamau, Joy Kim, Louis Liu and Nissi Undurthi. Elective chapel credit is available.
