President Robin Baker and his wife Ruth invite employees to join the university community at this year’s Christmas Concert in Bauman Auditorium on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 2:30 p.m.

Following the concert, Robin and Ruth invite employees to join them for their annual Christmas Open House at the president’s home, 402 S. College St., in Newberg, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Employees (half time and above) are entitled to up to four complimentary tickets for Sunday’s matinee performance or a single ticket for any of the other performances (at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 11-12). To obtain your complimentary employee ticket(s), go to this link, click on “Buy Tickets” and follow these five steps in the ticket process:

4. Payment Info
5. Process Order

The place to find the George Fox employee option is under Ticket Type on the “Review Selection” page. You need to use the drop-down arrow and select “GFU Employee* ($0.00).” Tickets are not transferable and need to be returned if they will not be used. A limited number of tickets are available, so if you plan to attend hurry before the concert is sold out!

The Nursing Club’s fall blood drive is today (Friday) from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Roberts Center’s Room 117.

There are many appointment slots open to donate blood. Our goal for this drive is to fill up all 98 slots. Please come donate if you are able to!

The Game Night Club is throwing our first Dominion Tournament this year in the Foxhole! The event is open to anyone who would like to come: students, employees, or your best friend from high school. We will start play at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, with a series of seeding games. Saturday’s bracket starts at 10 a.m. Prizes will go to the first- and second-place finishers.

Don’t know how to play Dominion but want to? Come to our Wednesday night meeting at 8:15 p.m. in the Foxhole and we will teach you the basics.

Midterm grades are important indicators of how you are doing in your classes. While they are not a part of your permanent record they are important to pay attention to.

In some cases, midterm grades represent about half your grade in the course. If you have questions, you should check with your professors. It is vital to know where you stand in each of your classes.

Midterm grades are meant to encourage you to get in touch with others: your professor, your advisor, your CAP Coach (Career & Academic Planning Coach), the Academic Resource Center.

The WORST thing to do about midterm grades is to ignore them or to assume you can improve them on your own.

Professors DO want to meet with you. Do not hesitate to make an appointment with each of them.

Midterm grades are due by Friday, Oct. 23. You should plan to check your midterm grades after this date.

Now you need to determine what to do next:
 Contact your professors. Faculty are not required to enter midterm grades. You are advised to check with each of your professors about your status in their classes.

Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D).

The last date to withdraw is Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015.

You can usually go below being enrolled in 12 credit hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid or housing. However, you should contact representatives in these departments to be certain:

Withdrawal results in a “W” on your transcript but does not factor into GPA.
 If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA. Confirm any thoughts of withdrawing from classes with your advisor.

Meet with each professor, especially those teaching courses you’re struggling in. Even if your professor doesn’t post midterm grades, find out from the professor what your grade is.

Meet with your advisor to discuss options.

Use labs, help sessions, and the ARC.

Sophia Tegart, instructor of flute, will join Jennifer Garrett, instructor of piano, and Valdine Mishkin, instructor of cello, to perform works by J.S. Bach, Cécile Chaminade, Chen Yi, and Carl Maria Von Weber at a faculty recital tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

The program will highlight German, Italian and Chinese folk songs, as well as works by women composers. All are welcome, and admission is free.

Don Sappington, director for strategic initiatives at Remember Nhu, will speak on “Human Trafficking: The Global Crisis and a Cry to Do Something.” The same presentation will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. and again from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests are asked to attend the later session.

Sappington will discuss what is being done – and what we can do – to combat the human trafficking that is taking place across the globe and in our own region. His presentation is the eighth in the “Majority World and the West” series.

Residence life, ASC and security services are teaming up to sponsor self-defense training for interested women on campus. The one-day session will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at a location to be determined.

The training is relevant to all athletic and non-athletic types and can be modified to differing physical abilities and challenges. The class is limited to 20 women, and sign-ups are now open in the Office of Student Life.

The cost is $25 for non-undergraduates; there is no cost for undergraduate women. This is open to any female member of the George Fox community.

Apple’s recent release of the El Capitan operating system (OS X 10.11) has resulted in an incompatibility with the FortiClient VPN. This is the VPN client used to connect to the George Fox network from off campus. The impact of this varies. ​In the best case users are unable to browse the web. In the worst cases users computers may observe repeated system restarts.

Based on this information, the Service Desk is recommending that users do not update their Mac computers to El Capitan until a compatible client is available. If you have already updated to El Capitan you are encouraged to uninstall the FortiClient VPN software while in Safe Mode.

Colin Noble: Friday, Oct. 30, 4:30 p.m. (Family Weekend), Hoover 105 (chapel credit available)
Noble, chaplain at William Clarke College in Sydney, Australia, will give a talk titled, “Resting for God.” He has spent the last three decades living on four continents and working in government, corporate, academic and pastoral settings.

After working in international banking in Tokyo for several years at the height of the Japanese economic boom, he pursued theological studies at Regent College. He then taught at the University of Sydney for 14 years before taking up his current position as chaplain to an educational community of 1,700 people, a role he has held since 2005.

Melissa Lane: Monday, Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m., Wood-Mar Hall
Lane, Class of 1943 Professor of Politics at Princeton University, will give a talk titled, “The Politics of Unsustainability: Plato on the Logic of Constitutional Change.” Lane’s books include The Birth of Politics: Eight Greek and Roman Political Ideas and Why They Matter (Princeton, 2015); Eco-Republic (Princeton, 2012); Plato’s Progeny (Duckworth, 2001); and Method and Politics in Plato’s Statesman (Cambridge, 1998).

Wilfred M. McClay: Thursday, Nov. 5, 7:30 p.m., Hoover 105
McClay is the G.T. and Libby Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty at the University of Oklahoma and also director of the Center for the History of Liberty. His talk is titled, “Why Religious Liberty Matters.” McClay’s book, The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America, won the Merle Curti Award of the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American intellectual history.
