Staff and students: We posted a link to the Active Shooter Protocol a few weeks ago, but in case you didn’t have a chance to click on the link, here is a more in-depth version of our Active Shooter Protocol:

Active Shooter Protocol

Assumption: The presence of an active shooter on campus
Emergency Classification: 1
Primary Incident Commander: VP of Student Life or Director of Security
Persons/Agencies Involved:

• Crisis Management Team, President, and Executive Leadership Team
• Newberg Police Department
• Environmental Safety Coordinator
• Plant Services
• University Communications

INITIAL RESPONSE:

1. If you are involved in a situation where someone has entered the area and started shooting, the following are a list of recommended actions: RUN

a. Exit the building immediately, leave your belongings behind
b. Notify anyone you may encounter to exit the building immediately
c. Notify the police by calling 911
d. Give the 911 operator the following information:

• Your name
• Location of the incident (be as specific as possible)
• Number of shooters (if known)
• Identification of shooter (if known)
• Number of persons who may be involved
• Your location
• Notify Campus Security at 503-554-2090
• Keep your hands visible
• Follow the instructions of any police officers
• Do not attempt to move wounded people

2. If you are directly involved and exiting the building is not possible, the following actions are recommended: HIDE

a. Go to the nearest room or office
b. Close the door, lock if possible
c. Cover or blockade the door/ windows and shut off lights if time allows
d. Keep quiet, silence cell phones, spread out, and act as if no one is in the room
e. DO NOT answer the door
f. Notify the police by calling 911
g. Give the 911 operator the following information:

• Your name
• Your location (be as specific as possible)
• Number of shooters (if known)
• Identification of shooter (if known)
• Number of persons who may be involved
• Wait for the police to assist you out of the building
• If you cannot speak, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen

3. As a last resort: FIGHT

If you are trapped and an active shooter enters your area you will need to protect yourself and others. Take action immediately!

• Throw anything at the shooter to cause a distraction
• Join others to tackle/immobilize shooter
• Restrain shooter until help arrives
• Activate Crisis Management Team(CMT) and Establish Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
• Possible initiation of campus lockdown and implementation of emergency notification system

NOTE: As a campus with unarmed officers our directive to the officers is to immediately contact the police and then help to evacuate any personnel from the immediate area IF they can do so without becoming a target or making others a target. One officer will contact the student life office to begin the notification procedure which initiates the emergency notification system and procedures outlined previously in this document. When the Newberg Police Department arrives we turn the command over to them and then assist in any way possible, as we know the layout of the campus and are able to access facilities.

You are invited to register for SPAN 210, Spanish for Medical Personnel, in spring semester. This three-credit class is a hybrid, with the face-to-face portion Mondays from 3 to 5 p.m. It is not an introductory Spanish course. You must have had a least one year of previous Spanish study, preferably in the past two to three years.

The Latino Heritage Club (LHC) will be hosting the next Spoken Word on Thursday, Nov. 12 in Hoover 105 at 8:30 p.m. The theme will be ‘Hopes & Fears’.

For example, you can talk about hopes for the future; the present; the past; Likewise, fears of the future; the present; the past. The theme could also branch out to successes, failures, culture, family, religion, friendship, adulthood, youth hood, etc. It could be a combination of both. Of course, this is Spoken Word, so the interpretation of this theme is limitless. This is the last Spoken Word of the semester, so let’s finish strong!

The Gospel. Worship. Fun. Square1 is a completely student-led chapel elective (meaning you get credit) designed to get back to the simple, core elements of faith in Christ, to start “back at square one”.

We will meet tonight (Friday) in Roberts 117 (across the canyon) at 6 p.m. We’ll have worship, get into the Word, and play a game of Franken-stuffed. Feel free to bring parents -we’ll wrap up a little early so that they can make it to the concert!

Are you a student interested in racial reconciliation and engaging in deeper conversations about living inter-culturally?

The Intercultural Life office is seeking students who want to Be Known as a Cultural Ambassador. This unique student leadership opportunity is designed to engage and challenge students to gain a better understanding of their culture and other cultures on campus. Skills learned through this training are indispensable in the workplace. In addition to training discussions on campus, students will travel to California to engage in this important conversation with students from other campuses at the Student Congress On Racial Reconciliation Conference.

The William Penn Honors Program invites you to join us this afternoon (Friday) for a special lecture featuring Colin Noble, chaplain at William Clarke College in Sydney, Australia. He will give a talk titled, “Resting for God” at 4:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Noble has spent the last three decades living on four continents and working in government, corporate, academic and pastoral settings. After working in international banking in Tokyo for several years at the height of the Japanese economic boom, he pursued theological studies at Regent College. He then taught at the University of Sydney for 14 years before taking up his current position as chaplain to an educational community of 1,700 people, a role he has held since 2005.

The campus will look a bit different on Saturday, as we expect to host more than 3,000 guests for Family Weekend and our football game against Linfield. Here are some things to make note of:

Bauman Parking Lot
Be sure to move your cars out of the Bauman parking lot on Friday evening. This space will be dedicated to vendors and tailgating on Saturday. Stop by on Saturday and check out all of the food and activities (including a “Tailgate-or-Treat”) happening before the game!

Entrances to the football game
There will be two entrances into the game and both are located in the Bauman parking lot, directly behind the stadium.

Wheeler Sports Center closed
The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This means the basketball gym, racquetball courts and locker rooms will be closed. The Fitness Center will remain open for normal business hours, but you will need to enter through the hallway entrance located on the field level, toward the end of the building near the tennis courts. There will be security officers who will ask you where you are headed; just let them know that you are going to work out.

Bauman Walkway
The sidewalk located between the football stadium and Bauman will be closed. Please walk around the building and do not move the barricade.

Barricades
If you see a barricade, it is there for a reason. Please do not move them, jump over them, crawl under them, or unlock them.

Circle Parking Lot
The circle parking lot near Wheeler will be closed for the day. This space is reserved for officials to park in. Officials will arrive as early as 8:30 a.m.

Sideline Passes
No one will be granted field access without a sideline pass. Sideline passes are issued to those who are required to work and/or have official business during the game.

Tickets
Students and staff can show their ID cards at the gate to get into the game. Additional tickets can be purchased online or at the gate by visiting this link.

Family Weekend Tailgating
We are expecting a crowd of 600-plus for Family Weekend! We will have bags available for families to “Tailgate-or-Treat,” so if you or your department/floor would like to bring candy to pass out under the big Alumni and Parent Relations tent from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. we are happy to have you join us!

We hope to see you at the game at 1:30 p.m. and the tailgates prior to that!

Sign up to carry a flag representing a cultural heritage of personal meaning to you at the Tuesday, Nov. 10, chapel service, in honor of Cultural Celebration Week. Email Tiona Cage (tcage@georgefox.edu) by Wednesday, Nov. 4, with your phone number and the name of the country that you would like to represent. We have more than 50 flags available.

A brief dress rehearsal will be held in advance of the Nov. 10 chapel in Bauman Auditorium (chapel begins at 10:40 a.m.). All carrying flags will be required to attend.

ASC is looking for projects to fund around campus! Outdoor seating? New dance studio? A movie theater? We want your proposals! The form can be found at this link under the “Student Project Fund” section. The deadline to submit ideas is Friday, Nov. 6.

• Auditions for Spitfire only will be from noon to 1 p.m.

Please prepare a 90-second contemporary dramatic monologue (for both Spitfire and Ten! Ten! Ten!). If you’d like to audition for the musical, please additionally prepare one minute of a song from a musical (bring your sheet music). Your monologue and song must be fully memorized, prepared and ready to present.

If you are not a major or minor and would like to audition, you may sign up and come to auditions without a monologue. We will have sides or monologues for you to read from.

Have you been looking for an opportunity to showcase your dancing abilities? Seeking an outlet for dance performance? The music department is looking for dancers to perform during our annual Christmas Concert Dec. 11-13! Auditions will be held tonight (Friday) from 6 to 7 p.m. in the dance room in Wheeler. We are looking for dancers with some experience in ballet.

Come join us from 1 to 3 p.m. on Halloween afternoon (Saturday) to harvest the last of our community garden produce and to put the garden to bed for the winter. We will have a variety of produce to take home, including potatoes, pumpkins and squash.

If you’ve been part of the garden since last spring and want to see how it’s grown, stop by! If you’ve never been to the garden but are interested in learning more, you are welcome to join! (Parents are welcome, too, since it’s Family Weekend.) The garden is located east of the Austin Sports Complex’s soccer field, in the field at the corner of Villa and Crestview.
