Oklahoma professor speaks on religious liberty tonight

Please join us tonight (Thursday) for a William Penn Honors Program lecture featuring Wilfred M. McClay, the G.T. and Libby Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty at the University of Oklahoma and director of the Center for the History of Liberty. He will present a talk titled “Why Religious Liberty Matters” at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

McClay’s book, The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America, won the Merle Curti Award of the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American intellectual history.

We’re proud to celebrate the seniors of our men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams this Saturday, Nov. 7, during their last home games of the year.

Symphonic Band, Handbell Ringers perform tonight in Bauman

Don’t forget to turn out tonight (Thursday) for a free Fall Symphonic Band Concert in Bauman Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

The evening features the university’s Handbell Ringers and Symphonic Band. The former will play the selections For All the Saints, You Raise Me Up and On This Day Earth Shall Ring, while the latter will perform Symphonic Fanfare, Stardust, Liberation, Florintiner Grande Marcia Italiana, Irish Tune from County Derry and Portrait of Freedom. Cynthia McGladrey serves as conductor of the Handbell Ringers, and Pat Vandehey and Dick Elliot serve as conductor and associate conductor of the Symphonic Band, respectively.

Visiting professor speaks on ‘Global Human Flourishing’ Monday

All are invited to the final Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation of the semester this Monday, Nov. 9, in Hoover 105, when Geri Mason, an assistant professor of economics at Seattle Pacific University, speaks on the topic “Global Human Flourishing: Should Markets be Freer? Fairer? Forsaken?” The same presentation will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. and again from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests are asked to attend the later session.

The presentation will discuss strategies of how we should interact with profit-seeking corporations, advocates of fair trade, humanitarian NGOs, and governments that control institutions vital to development. Her presentation is the 10th in the “Majority World and the West” series.

Quilt works go on display today in Minthorne Gallery

The Department of Art and Design welcomes the university community to an opening reception for a show, “Conversation,” featuring the quilt work of artists Bonnie Hull and Kay Worthington, today (Thursday) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Minthorne Gallery.

The event will also feature an artists’ talk from 4:10 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 105. Refreshments will be served at the reception.
