All invited to join in MLK Day of Service on Jan. 18

November 23rd, 2015

Do you love to serve? Does volunteering for the larger vision of Martin Luther King Jr. inspire you? How about in Portland?

Your chance to get involved with our neighboring community is finally here, with the opportunity to be a part of MLK Day of Service in Portland!

MLK Day of Service is a day we are able to live into this vision Dr. King had for serving and justice. Though one day of service is never enough to fully celebrate him or what he stood for, we hope you are able to join us for this day of service and recognition of Dr. King.

MLK Day of Service takes place on Monday, Jan. 18. You can register and find more information about what the day will look like here.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email spirituallife@georgefox.edu.

W-2 forms now paperless: Have you consented?

November 22nd, 2015

In support of our Creation Care values, Human Resources will issue 2015 year-end W-2 forms online in “Self Service” for all employees, including student employees. If you do not want HR to print and deliver your W-2, the law requires that you give your consent. If you consented in the past, you do NOT need to do so again.

You can verify your consent status or give consent for the first time by following the steps below. It only takes about 30 seconds, so I encourage you to take care of it as soon as possible – perhaps right now? Here’s how:

  1. Log in to mygfu.georgefox.edu
  2. From the menu at left, select “Self Service”
  3. Select “Payroll and Compensation”
  4. Select “W-2/W-2c Consent”
  5. Check your current status. Does it say “Consent received?” If so, thank you! You’re done.
    If not,
  6. Read the statement and check the box to give consent
  7. Enter your GFU password as a confirmation of your identity and click “Continue”
  8. Click “OK”

You’ll receive a confirmation email of your decision shortly after completing this process. And just to be clear, you will only have to do this once – not every year.

Thanks very much. Let me know if you have any questions.

Learn video-producing skills at Media Lab lunch events

November 22nd, 2015

Are you interested in learning how to quickly produce a video that can be shared with students, colleagues or public audiences? Have you had any experience with screencasting tools – or would you like to start playing with some of these tools?

Join us for a hands-on introduction to Screencastify, led by Brent Weaver, a mentor in the Digital Fluency Initiative. We will play with the tool, share our experiences, and explore ideas.

In addition, we’ll upload videos to our individual George Fox YouTube channels. A key takeaway for this lab will be to identify next steps for advancing our capabilities in using media in our learning communities.

Bring your laptop or tablet and your brown-bag lunch.

  • Newberg brown-bag lunch: Monday, Dec. 7, Roberts Center 168, noon-1 p.m.
  • Portland Center brown-bag lunch: Wednesday, Dec. 9, PDS 280, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Ceramic artist is tonight’s guest at Art Talk

November 22nd, 2015

Tonight (Monday) in the Chehalem Cultural Center’s ballroom, the Art Talk program will host Sunshine Cobb, a utilitarian ceramic artist who has been working in ceramics for 15 years. She has done everything from eight-day anagama wood firings to slip castings. She focuses her talent on functional ware, embracing the richness of earthenware, and is currently exploring the challenge of electrogama (electric firing).

Come to the Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.) tonight at 6 p.m. to hear about Sunshine’s artwork and processes. Hope to see you there!

Join us for bread making, Shalom service Tuesday

November 22nd, 2015

Be sure to join us in Shalom tomorrow (Tuesday) as we celebrate God’s goodness in an Ebenezer service at 9 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room.

This is a great way to explore how our forebears have engaged in thankfulness and celebration throughout history, as well as engaging with community in a wonderful time for worship. Students can also get some of that elective chapel credit. Don’t miss it!

Also, at 6 p.m. in Lewis 1 on Tuesdays before Shalom, we’re teaching artisan bread making! The bread we share in Shalom every week is handmade by students, and we have a great time enjoying community and learning this skill. Now, we want to share that experience with you! Be sure to take advantage of this awesome opportunity.

Questions? Contact Amanda Kitz at akitz13@georgefox.edu.
