A beginning guitar class and private guitar lessons are being offered this spring on campus for credit! Sign up and add some fun and a new skill to your schedule.

The Beginning Guitar Class is offered for those new to the guitar who want to learn in a fun group setting. Learn the skills to play all your favorite rock, folk, pop and worship songs! No experience is necessary, but your own guitar is. The class is MUSI 250-A (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 4:15-5:05 p.m.). Currently we’re only offering one section, but may offer a second if the first one fills up.

Private Guitar Lessons are offered to bring your playing to the next level very quickly. One-on-one lessons cover beginners all the way to very experienced players. Sign up and you’ll get top-notch instruction that is specific to your skill level and caters to the styles of music that you really want to learn. We can focus on anything from classical, rock, blues, metal, shred, folk, worship, etc. It’s up to you. The class is MUSA 105 GT/305 GT.

Lessons and class are taught by G.I.T. Musicians Institute graduate and veteran guitar player/instructor Jordan Stricklen.

Join the community of Newberg as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrate his legacy with a free program featuring a talk by Johnny Lake of Northwest Christian University and performances by local musicians and artists, including two of our very own students.

This year’s commemoration will be held at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. An informal social hour with refreshments will also be held prior to the program, from 5 to 6 p.m.

Do you love George Fox? Want to help prospective students get a taste of the college life? The admissions office is looking for overnight hosts for daily visitors during spring semester!

The Office of Spiritual & Intercultural Life is looking for post-college leaders for our six-week spring Life Groups (the weeks of Feb. 14 to March 27).

Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship. Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes at the time and location of your choosing. Participants will select the group they wish to participate in based on the details that leaders provide.

Groups are encouraged to use one of the curriculum options recommended by the Office of Spiritual & Intercultural Life that parallel other themes that are being explored in chapel. We welcome our alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group.

Our spring leader meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 4, from noon to 1:30 p.m. (location TBA), and lunch will be provided. For more information and to sign up, visit this webpage.

Are you interested in leading a serve trip over spring break? We are looking for both student and faculty leaders. Here are the trip descriptions:

Haiti
In partnership with the French department, a team of students will be immersed in the Haitian culture as well as serve alongside local ministries and health care organizations. The trip will be led by Isabelle Corneaux and Jaques St. Gelus. Separate applications are required.

Camp Attitude
Students will partner and serve with Camp Attitude, a not-for-profit Christian organization dedicated to providing a unique faith-based camping experience for families in the disability community. Students will help complete projects for the camp and maintain facilities for the special needs community

Flying H Ranch, Yakima, Wash.
This trip is located at the Flying H Ranch, located 30 miles west of Yakima, Wash. The ranch ministers to at-risk youth. On this trip, students will do physical labor as well as spend some time with the boys in worship, devotions, meals, games and conversation.

Urban Impact, Seattle
A team of students will serve with Urban Impact in Seattle, focusing on building relationships and serving in the community through the local church. The team will do a variety of work projects, which may include tutoring, service projects, administrative work and cleaning.

Mending Wings, Washington
We will partner with Mending Wings, a nonprofit Native American youth organization located on the Yakama Reservation in Washington state. Students will come alongside the reservation community to build trust and friendship while serving alongside them painting homes, cleaning yards of garbage and debris, chopping wood for elders, mowing, weeding gardens, working at a homeless shelter, doing light construction projects, and perhaps working at one of their local powwows.

San Francisco
This trip will go to San Francisco to work with ReImagine, a center for integrating Christian practice. The week will consist of guided prayer tours, trash pick-up, serving meals to people living on the streets, learning about local issues such as human trafficking and poverty, as well as spending time in group and individual spiritual reflection.

If you are interested in participating, applications are due no later than Friday, Feb. 12. If you would like to serve as a student leader, applications are due Saturday, Jan. 30.

Foster Parents Night Out is here! This will be a monthly event (the second Saturday of the month from 4 to 8 p.m.) when students will get to interact, mentor and spend time with children in the foster care system while foster parents get a few hours off.

There will be games, food, crafts and much more. It will be held at McMinnville’s Church on the Hill (home of an awesome indoor playground called Scotty’s playhouse). We need your help! Whether you want to facilitate games, rock climbing, crafts, help with security, or help in the nursery, all skill sets are welcome and needed.

There are only 25 spots available, and you do need to be 18 years or older. Background checks will be required.

Important: Please fill out this short form to reserve your spot and let us know where you would most like to participate and to put on your calendars the mandatory DHS training on Sunday, Jan. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room. If you cannot make this training, there is one the next Sunday in Portland that can be arranged.

Use your new, empty 2016 Spring sites as the sites in which you will teach. You may import content from another course site. See the instructions here for importing.

Your 2016 Spring sites are hidden to students. When you are ready to make a site visible, go to Administration> Course administration > Edit settings on the course home page. Scroll down to the “Visible” section and change “Hide” to “Show” from the drop-down menu. Then “Save changes” at the bottom.

Remember that all students enrolled in your class in MyGFU will automatically be enrolled in your FoxTALE course site. As students add and drop your course in MyGFU, they will be added or removed automatically from your FoxTALE site

If your course site is set to “Weekly” format, your course might show incorrect dates. To change the dates, go to Administration> Edit settings on the course home page. Scroll down to the course start date and change it to the first day of your 2016 Spring course. Scroll to the bottom of the page and “Save changes.”

The faculty of the College of Christian Studies invites the campus community to join them for daily morning prayer weekdays this spring semester from 7:45 to 8 a.m. in Hoover 250 (note time change from fall semester).

Prayer format will alternative between liturgical and unprogrammed, with various members of the CCS faculty providing leadership. Come as often as your schedule allows. All are welcome.

In the event of a campus- or city-wide emergency such as a severe winter storm, flood or major earthquake, employees, students and visitors to George Fox should be prepared to keep safe and possibly assist in recovery. Therefore, we are providing life-saving C-CERT training for any and all interested persons.

In an effort to make it easier for more people to participate, we are doing a hybrid course of online instruction combined with lunch-hour training once a week to build knowledge and skills as a CERT member. The weekly meetings will be every Tuesday starting Feb. 2 and last from noon to 1 p.m.
