American pop culture is topic of tonight’s LACI lecture

February 7th, 2016

Join us for the third Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture of the semester this Monday, Feb. 8, when Kristie Knows His Gun, an assistant professor of psychology here at George Fox, speaks on the topic “American Pop Culture: Left Swipe or Right” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Within a fingertip’s reach we are faced with a bounty of American pop culture. These images, messages and ideas influence our everyday lives, but what are consequences for those who miss, or don’t resonate, with the trend? Knows His Gun will explore the influence of American pop culture on individuals who fall to the wayside of mainstream.

The theme for this semester’s LACI series is “Christianity and Pop Culture.” For more information, contact Laurie Fair at lfair@georgefox.edu.

Employment scam alert

February 5th, 2016

We want to remind you to be discerning when you are seeking employment opportunities online. With the Internet connecting us to all corners of the world, scams are present.

We would like to remind you to never send money to any employment opportunity. A genuine organization would never ask for payment.

Also, do not complete a W-2 form sharing your Social Security number unless you have met your new employer face to face.

Bruin Careers is a service that George Fox provides to help employers connect to students, as one of our priorities is to assist students in finding employment that supports your career aspirations. The IDEA Center staff reads each posting carefully, but we recently had a scam slip through our system as Internet thieves are using new tactics posing as actual Newberg businesses.

We do not have access to your correspondence with employers, so we caution you to be discerning if you receive emails that do not have proper English or grammar.

If you ever have any questions or suspicions, please come to the IDEA Center and ask to talk with a Career Coach and we will help you vet the organization or company.

Sign up today for special Spiritual Formation Colloquium

February 5th, 2016

Join us for a special four-week Spiritual Formation Colloquium that begins Wednesday, Feb. 17, and meets each Wednesday after that through March 9 (Feb. 17, Feb. 24, March 2 and March 9). We’ll gather in Stevens 109 from 10 to 11 a.m. each week, and our facilitator will be Kathy Noling, former associate campus pastor at Westmont College. You can sign up here.

The Christian faith is meant to be passionate, hopeful and creative, but sometimes we get stuck in tedious patterns when approaching God that keep us from experiencing the rich and fulfilling relationship that He intends. Such patterns ultimately can lead us away from God.

In this colloquium, we will introduce some spiritual practices that will help you be quiet, expectant and receptive to the Holy Spirit’s voice.

Note: You’ll receive five Chapel Elective Credits for attending all four colloquium sessions.

Questions? Contact Jamie Johnson at jamiej@georgefox.edu.
