Hear travel stories of faith, adventure and fun at the Brown Bag Travels session today!

All are welcome to attend the first of our Brown Bag Travels today (Thursday) from noon to 12:50 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room.

This first session will focus on travel stories. Provost Linda Samek, professor Paul Chamberlain, and students Allison Killeen, Jeremy Qian, Sutton Mills and Tara Baker will share vignettes of the travel experiences they have found humorous or meaningful, and sometimes both! Bring your brown bag or lunch tray and join us for a great time.

Dr. Keith Dempsey, chair of the George Fox counseling program at the Portland campus, is coming to speak about how society views African American men. “Brothers, Can We Talk?” is an honest conversation which highlights how many institutions of higher education proclaim to embrace diversity but many black men continue to have challenging experiences on university and college campuses. Come to hear the trials and triumphs of black men who have navigated the waters of higher education.

Students are eligible to receive an elective chapel credit.

Dr. Dempsey will be speaking on the Newberg campus in the Cap and Gown Room from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday).

Applications are now being accepted for 2016-17 ARC consultants. If you know students who write well, are thoughtful learners, and desire to support peers in their academic success, encourage them to apply. Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply; representation from multiple disciplines strengthens the ARC’s ability to support a wide range of students. Completed materials are due by Friday, March 4.

More than 1,200 high school guests will be using the Bauman Auditorium and Ross Center tomorrow (Friday) for a choir festival. There will be buses driving in and out of the Bauman parking lot all day (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and parking on Fulton Street. Please use caution in and around the parking lots and be considerate of our guests.

Do you like showing others ways to be a more effective and efficient student? Do your friends always come to you to look over their papers before they turn them in? Do you have a GPA above 3.0?

If you answered yes to these questions, you might have a future as a consultant in the Academic Resource Center (ARC). We are interested in students from any major (not just English).

Current students who would like to be considered for approval to live off-campus prior to housing selection will need to submit a residency exemption request before 5 p.m. on Monday, March 4. Requests submitted after that date will be reviewed at the end of each month beginning in April. The last day to submit an exemption request for fall 2016 is May 31. Requests submitted after that time may not be considered.

The deadline to submit an off-campus request for extreme financial hardship is also May 31. You can find the petition for financial hardship in the Student Life office or on the George Fox housing website.

Students who are placed in housing and eligible to live off-campus have until July 31 to notify the housing department of their intent to live off-campus.

Apply to be a Peer Advisor for next fall! Do you like to meet new people? Are you passionate about making everyone feel included? Do you like to be helpful? We are looking for a diverse group of 80 students to welcome in the class of 2020!

You don’t need to be an extrovert, just someone who is willing to go out of your way to make new students feel welcome. The application can be found here, with submissions due today (Wednesday, Feb. 24) at 5 p.m. in the student life office.

If you’re interested in completing a George Fox course in half the time and paying only 50 percent tuition while doing it, then the summer online program is the way to go!

Registration for summer 2016 is now open. The summer online dates are June 6 – July 31. You can check out our newly updated class information site, class.georgefox.edu, for a list of the classes being offered, or visit the George Fox summer courses site. If you have questions about the applicability of a class to your degree requirements, contact your CAP coach for more information. In many cases, your financial aid package may be used to cover the cost (check with Financial Aid for details).
