The MLRC and Portland Center libraries are now accepting debit and credit cards to purchase print cards. No more digging in your pockets or wallet for that extra change to purchase a print card. You can now purchase the print card you need with your debit/credit card.
The IT Service Desk not only accepts your debit or credit card, but Apple and Android Pay is also available. So if you need a new ID card, power adapter or to pay for those unexpected repair parts you will no longer need to provide cash or a check. Just put it on the card.
We will continue to accept cash and checks through June 30, 2016. Beginning July 1, 2016, these locations will only accept your electronic forms payment (debit/credit/touch pay), and ID cards will no longer be charged to student accounts.

It will be an exciting summer as we open the new dining hall, Canyon Commons! This facility will feature a large dining hall area (seating up to 555), three conference/meeting rooms (holding from 80 to 90 each that can also be combined to create a larger space), the president’s dining room (seating up to 20), and an espresso cafe (seating up to 60).
In May, construction will also begin on the remodeling of the former dining hall, servery, kitchen and Cap and Gown Room into space for the College of Engineering, which means that the Bruin Den and Bruin Bites will be impacted. Following are important dates to keep in mind in terms of meal service venues for the summer:

Dexter Ballard has joined plant services as a custodian this month. He arrives from Aldersgate Camps and Retreats in Turner, Ore., where he was a maintenance assistant. Before that, he worked various jobs in Santa Cruz, Calif., primarily at Mission Springs Camps and Conference Center. Dexter holds a bachelor’s degree in history and social studies from Warner Pacific College (2012). He recently moved to Newberg with his wife, Courtney.
Kyle Wattenbarger (Plant Services) left the university in early April after serving at George Fox for 12 years. He left to stay home and take care of his three children.
Matt Sargent has moved from enrollment manager for the adult degree program and the Master of Social Work program to the position of associate registrar. Britny Scholz has moved out of the College of Business, where she was the program coordinator for the MBA and DBA programs, into the enrollment manager role that Matt vacated.
Kathy Heininge (English) presented her paper, “Paul Murray and W. B. Yeats: Sprezzatura for a Modern Ireland?,†at the national meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies at Notre Dame University the first weekend of April. In addition, her book review on Staging Intercultural Ireland: New Plays and Practitioner Perspectives came out this month in the Irish Literary Supplement. She also wrote an article, “Once: Ulysses Revisited,†that is forthcoming in a book on intercultural adaptations of theater in Ireland, and her article on “James Joyce and the Habitual Present Tense†was accepted, pending some revisions, for publication in the James Joyce Quarterly, the major Joyce journal. Finally, Kathy’s book Reflections: Virginia Woolf and her Quaker Aunt, Caroline Stephen should be released by Peter Lang within the month.
John Bennett (Art and Design) was selected as a professional reviewer for Portland Photo Month. In that role, he is giving portfolio critiques of Northwest photographers for Photolucida, a nonprofit organization that, every other April, hosts an international set of photographers and reviewers in Portland for a five-day celebration of photography that includes lectures, workshops and exhibitions. Reviewers are selected for their experience, involvement and commitment to advancing the work of emerging and mid-career artists. By providing a venue for in-depth, informed, and supportive dialogue between photographers, gallery owners, curators, publishers, editors, and consultants, Photolucida promotes the culture of photography locally, nationally and internationally.
Glena Andrews (Director of Clinical Training – Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology) will present at the Eastern Oregon Psychological Association’s 31st annual Wallowa Lake Conference on May 21. The title of her presentation is, “Neuropsychology: Frontal Lobe Dysfunction, Difficult Diagnoses, and Use of Screening Tools.â€
Carmen Imes (College of Christian Studies) successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at Wheaton College on April 1. Her project is entitled, “Bearing YHWH’s Name at Sinai: A Re-examination of the Name Command of the Decalogue (Exod 20:7).” She will graduate with a PhD in biblical theology – Old Testament.
Ed Higgins’ (English) poem “Jalapeños†was selected to be included in the “EAT: A Literature + Photography Installationâ€Â exhibit scheduled to open in May at Centre College in Danville, Ky. Out of over 150 entries, Ed’s submission was one of 11 selected. His piece will be paired with a photographic interpretation by Kentucky photographer Sarah Jane Sanders. In addition, First Class Literary Magazine posted Ed’s poem “Sisyphus†on its website, and, in a Caribbean-based (Trinidad) online poetry journal (Random Poem Tree), three of his poems were published in March: “April Touch,†“A Poem Should Always†and “Tensions.â€

We are looking for several students to work as interns for the university’s Community Garden this summer. These internships will be based on projects related to your major or minor (graduate students living in Newberg can also apply). In addition to joining us for gardening and a potluck once a week, these internships will take two to four hours a week May through August. Interns will receive a stipend of up to $400 for the summer, dependent on completion of agreed-upon projects.
Interested applicants should send an email with a concise description of any relevant experience, why they are interested in the job, and summer availability to Cherice Bock (cbock@georgefox.edu) by Sunday, April 24. Applicants should also have one professor or employer send a reference letter.
Compost & Garden Health Intern: Collect compostable materials from local businesses and individuals and maintain a compost pile (hot compost). Monitor the compost, as well as attending to the health of other aspects of the garden, researching and implementing organic mitigation strategies (pests, disease, soil health, or other areas of interest/expertise). Biology or other science major preferred.
Food Access & Community Connection: Coordinate the harvest and distribution of extra produce, connecting the food with Newberg residents who need food. Build connections with local individuals and organizations dealing with food security/food sovereignty and create and implement strategies for getting people connected with learning how to grow their own food with us. Social sciences or Christian ministries major preferred.
Garden Structures: We need some structure in our new location! If you have experience and enjoy engineering and building things, we have several structural projects on our list for this year, from researching, creating/purchasing, and implementing structures for plants to working with the compost intern to structure a compost area. Engineering major or someone with a strong construction background preferred.
Documentation: This one could go a few different directions. A science major could document the scientific processes occurring in the garden (planting dates, various treatments, harvest dates and amounts, and so forth). A writing/literature major could document our work in a narrative style, sharing about our garden on our blog. An art major could use photography and other artistic mediums to document our work. All of these would have the possibility of developing your social media skills if you’re interested in sharing about our work on our blog and/or Facebook page.
Business: Develop and implement a business plan for a cash crop or two that could be sold to local outlets. Keep track of garden finances. Business, economics, finance, or accounting major preferred.
Grant Writing: Research possible grants the community garden could apply for, and work alongside Community Garden Coordinator to draft grants proposals. This position is open to writing/literature, business, or communications majors, or others with strong written communication skills and interest in gaining experience in grant writing.
