Art Talk hosts artist Derrick Velasquez tonight

Join us tonight (Monday) for a talk featuring Derrick Velasquez, who received his Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Ohio State University in 2008. He works in media including performance, installation, sculpture and photography.

Velasquez is a founding member and co-manager at TANK Studios, the founder of the YE$ M’am grant for artists, a board member of the Art-Plant Artist Residency, and serves as a commissioner for the city on the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs.

Don’t miss out on hearing from Velasquez about his practice as an artist tonight in the ballroom of the Cultural Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.) at 6 p.m.

Now, it’s back to Employee of the Month awards. With so many who worked so hard to ensure this fall began well for our employees and students, there are many whose contributions have especially stood out over the last several weeks. If you know someone who deserves special recognition for above-and-beyond work, send an email to Lisa Burton (lburton@georgefox.edu) by Friday, Oct. 21, with a summary of this colleague’s recent contributions and any other information that makes this person deserving of this award.

The Executive Leadership Team will select the recipient from the nominations submitted, and the winner will be honored with a citation and a $100 Visa gift card at our community meeting on Oct. 27.

Model auditions for fashion show are Wednesday in Bauman

Want to be involved in a unique and exciting opportunity? Do you enjoy being a part of on-stage productions? Be a model in the George Fox Spring Fashion Show! This is the last fashion show production the university will be hosting, so have a part in making it unforgettable.

Auditions will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. This opportunity is open to both men and women. Women models: If your have heels to walk in, bring them.

Willing to brave zombies? Sign up for ‘Running Dead’ race

Doctor of physical therapy students are hosting a hair-raising “The Running Dead” 5K walk/run on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Chased by zombies through a forested trail, runners will attempt to beat the odds of survival. Costumes of all kinds (not just zombies) are encouraged, and a prize will be awarded for best costume.

Swing dancing venue changed to the FoxHole tonight

Hello Swing Dancers and Families! We will be hosting swing dancing tonight (Saturday) in the FoxHole due to unforeseen circumstances. Like usual, we will be having a beginner lesson at 6:30 p.m., an intermediate lesson at 7:00 p.m., and an open dance from 7:30 p.m. on. Hope to see you and all of your families tonight! Family Weekend Schedule: Oct. 15

Family Weekend is underway! Parents and students are already reuniting and enjoyed a brief break from the rain on Friday. Given the incoming storm, the Office of Parent Relations wanted to make sure that anyone involved with Family Weekend was in the loop on the most current times and locations for Saturday, Oct. 15, events.

  • Registration, Canyon Commons Lobby (8 a.m. – Noon): Check in, pick up tickets, and get information.
  • Bridge Cafe Open to Families (8:30-11 a.m.): Order coffee or smoothies before you start your adventures for the day.
  • Scripture-Based Campus Tour, begins in the Bridge Café (9-10:15 a.m.) or (3-4:15 p.m.): Join Clyde Thomas, director of plant services, for a special tour in which he shares scriptural inspirations and the significant meanings behind places and buildings across campus.
  • Women’s Soccer Game vs. Pacific, Austin Sports Complex (Noon – 2 p.m.)
  • Volleyball Game vs. Whitman, Miller Gymnasium, Wheeler Sports Center (1–3 p.m.)
  • Family Weekend Food Truck Dinner (seating in Canyon Commons 101-103), Food Trucks in Roberts Center back parking lot (5-7 p.m.)

Be Known as a Cultural Ambassador

Are you a student interested in being a part of tough conversations revolving around race, faith, and diversity? Do you enjoy discussions about intercultural communication and relationships? If this is you, then consider applying to be a Cultural Ambassador through the Intercultural Life office.

This unique student leadership opportunity is open only for six to 10 students who are seeking to be culturally engaged and who have a desire to see change take place on their own campus. The skills acquired through this intensive training are recognized as being indispensable in the workplace (of all fields). In addition to training with your peers on a weekly basis, students involved in Cultural Ambassadors will be attending the SCORR (Student Congress of Racial Reconciliation Conference) in the month of February, held at Biola University.

This is an enriching opportunity for all students, so do you want to be known as a Cultural Ambassador?

Applications will be open from Oct. 31 through Nov. 11.
