George Fox is in the process of formulating teams to participate in the community’s Relay for Life event, scheduled from 6 p.m. to 2 p.m. on June 20-21 at Newberg High School. Would you like to walk in the relay this year? If so, please contact Nancy Almquist (Development) this week at ext. 2120 or at nalmquist@georgefox.edu and let her know of your interest. Last year, the Newberg event raised $115,000 in the fight against cancer.

Richard Reiten, chairman of the board for Northwest Natural Gas and the company’s former CEO, will speak at both spring commencement ceremonies this Saturday, April 26. The university will confer 330 traditional undergraduate degrees and 362 graduate, seminary, and professional studies degrees. About 570 students are expected to participate in the ceremonies.
Undergraduate commencement begins at 2 p.m. in Miller Gymnasium in the Wheeler Sports Center, with audience seating at 1 p.m. The ceremony for graduate, seminary, and professional studies students starts at 7 p.m. in the same location, with seating for guests beginning at 6 p.m.
Also, on the morning of April 26, a baccalaureate service is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium.
Reiten’s commencement address is titled “A Mission Possible: Making a Difference.” For more scheduling information on commencement weekend, visit the commencement events page.

Engineering will host its second annual Engineering Expo on Friday, April 18, in EHS. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Ron Gregory Atrium, engineering class project presentations will be on exhibit.
Then, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., industry-sponsored senior design presentations will be showcased in EHS 102. Featured will be a dry food products automated seasoner for PPM Technologies and a ruggedized portable thermal printer for Tripod Data Systems. Refreshments will be provided.

A farewell reception for Tom Johnson (Religious Studies) is scheduled from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in the John and Marilyn Duke Atrium in the Stevens Center. Tom is retiring from the university after serving in various capacities at George Fox the past 11 years. He and his wife Michele are moving to Whidbey Island, Wash., in their retirement.

The Portland Center Library is pleased to have on-location watercolors by Gary Buhler on display.
Gary Buhler is an Assistant Professor of Art at George Fox University. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Western Oregon University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona, Tucson.
Gary’s watercolors portray Northwest scenes of rivers, riverbanks, waterfalls and surrounding landscapes painted in rich blues, greens, and golds with bright white representing the rippling and splashing water.
Come by and take a long look or slip in for a quick peek.

The library staff wishes to thank the George Fox community for participating in the recent library service quality survey. Over the past few weeks, 887 students, faculty, staff, and administrators, or 22 percent of the university community, completed the survey. Many respondents also supplied written comments. Library faculty and staff will soon review the data plus all the suggestions and comments with great interest.

The university community is welcome to As it is in Heaven, the theatre department’s final play of the 2007-08 season.
Performances are scheduled April 10-12 and April 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium. There is also one matinee performance, at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13.
Synopsis: An 1830s Shaker community in Pleasant Hill, Ky., is set in its ordered ways until a newcomer, Fanny, see angels in the meadow. Soon all the young women are receiving spiritual “gifts” of songs, drawings, ideas, and giggles and completely upsetting the community. Are these gifts an honest resurgence of the original shaker celebration, or something manufactured by Fanny?
Employees receive one complimentary ticket, available for pick-up at the University Store. Students are welcome to see the show free of charge at the two Thursday performances and may pick up those tickets at the University Store. The cost is $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12. To purchase tickets or find out more, visit theatre.georgefox.edu.

The group Partners in Diversity will sponsor an event, “Breakfast for Champions,” from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Friday, April 4, in Portland Center’s Room 155.
The event allows for networking and education on diversity matters with business and education leaders in the greater Portland area. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m., keynote speaker Robin Baker will address the group at 8 a.m., and Perry L Gruber, program and communications manager for Community Solutions, Intel Corporation, will follow with a presentation about corporate responsibility and diversity.
