It is a recurring complaint among faculty that students do not complete their assigned readings or that they read them superficially.
Rick Muthiah (Center for Teaching and Learning) will lead a discussion about effective methods for using readings in your classes. Participants can get a head start on the conversation by reading a recent “Tomorrow’s Professor†posting and a chapter from Tools for Teaching (the section on motivating students to do the reading).
The session will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in Hoover 104 (Hoover Hatfield Library). To reserve a lunch, e-mail Jere Witherspoon (jwithers@georgefox.edu) by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17. Everyone is welcome to attend the session, whether bringing a lunch or reserving a lunch. Please have your lunch ready so we can begin the conversation at noon.
All faculty — full time, part time, and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs). Video podcasts of FTFs will be available at the “Events and Resources†link on the Center for Teaching and Learning website.

This Sunday, March 15, at 3 p.m., a memorial service will be held in Hoover 105 for Ryan Bartlett, who died tragically in a car accident in Malawi in December, where he and his family were serving as missionaries with Free Methodist World Missions.
Ryan graduated from George Fox in 1994 as a business management major with a call to ministry. After graduation, he married Katie Bertagna and pursued his Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. After completing his education, he served as senior pastor of Prescott Free Methodist Church in Arizona for five years and was ordained as a minister in 2005.
In 2007, with Free Methodist World Missions, Ryan began his service as principal of the Great Commission Bible School in Malawi, Africa. He is survived by his wife, Katie, and three children. A memorial service was held in December in Roseburg, but this memorial service allows the George Fox community and other supporters of his ministry to gather and to celebrate his life. The service will be led by Paul Anderson, Ryan’s college mentor and friend. Childcare will be provided.
