The university community is invited to explore portions of the St. John’s Bible at a special presentation from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the Stevens Center’s Duke Atrium. The project began in 1998 at Saint John’s Abbey and St. John’s University, which commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible.
Come see a work of art that unites an ancient Benedictine tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium. The Gospels and Acts will be on display, along with several individual art pieces from the series. In addition, Brad Neary, representative for the project, and Paul Anderson, professor of biblical studies at George Fox, will present short talks on topics related to the Bible and its artwork.
Stop by the atrium and enjoy the St. John’s Bible!

Synopsis: One of Shakespeare’s most celebrated comedies, Twelfth Night features Viola’s cross-dressing misadventures as she tries to figure out love and survival in a world of lovesick men. Hilarious reversals and bittersweet misunderstandings ensue, as Viola introduces her ambiguous identity to the misfit oddballs of Illyria – and steals more than one heart in the process. If you would like a little cash in your pocket and/or are interested in seeing what George Fox’s adult students are up to, please consider evaluating student essay submissions for the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program. All evaluators – both new and returning – are required to attend a PLA Evaluator Training Session from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, in Room 117 of the Villa Academic Complex.
Prior learning credit is earned when an adult undergraduate student demonstrates college-level learning that has occurred outside of a traditional college classroom. These adult students submit formal eight- to 10-page essays to the university that must then be evaluated by faculty to determine whether credit should be granted. Faculty evaluators earn $30 per essay in their discipline area.
Jennie Harrop (PLA coordinator) and Matt Sargent (PLA enrollment manager) have been working to streamline the PLA process both in terms of essay expectations and submission requirements, and look forward to sharing those ideas on Oct. 24. The process for assessing whether a student has earned college credit is based on established guidelines provided by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) and the American Council on Education (ACE).
RSVP to Jennie at jharrop@georgefox.edu.
