McClay, the G.T. and Libby Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty at the University of Oklahoma and director of the Center for the History of Liberty. He will present a talk titled “Why Religious Liberty Matters” at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

McClay’s book, The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America, won the Merle Curti Award of the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American intellectual history.

The William Penn Honors Program invites you to join us tonight (Monday) as Melissa Lane, Class of 1943 Professor of Politics at Princeton University, will give a talk titled, “The Politics of Unsustainability: Plato on the Logic of Constitutional Change.” Her presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Hall.

Lane’s books include The Birth of Politics: Eight Greek and Roman Political Ideas and Why They Matter (Princeton, 2015); Eco-Republic (Princeton, 2012); Plato’s Progeny (Duckworth, 2001); and Method and Politics in Plato’s Statesman (Cambridge, 1998).

Noble has spent the last three decades living on four continents and working in government, corporate, academic and pastoral settings. After working in international banking in Tokyo for several years at the height of the Japanese economic boom, he pursued theological studies at Regent College. He then taught at the University of Sydney for 14 years before taking up his current position as chaplain to an educational community of 1,700 people, a role he has held since 2005.

Following the concert, Robin and Ruth invite employees to join them for their annual Christmas Open House at the president’s home, 402 S. College St., in Newberg, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Employees (half time and above) are entitled to up to four complimentary tickets for Sunday’s matinee performance or a single ticket for any of the other performances (at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 11-12). Residence life, ASC and security services are teaming up to sponsor self-defense training for interested women on campus. The one-day session will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at a location to be determined.

The training is relevant to all athletic and non-athletic types and can be modified to differing physical abilities and challenges. The class is limited to 20 women, and sign-ups are now open in the Office of Student Life.

The cost is $25 for non-undergraduates; there is no cost for undergraduate women. This is open to any female member of the George Fox community.

Gerard Olinger, VP for student affairs and assistant professor of political science at the University of Portland, will lead the event. Try to stump Father Gerry and his fellow priests!

The forum, hosted by the George Fox Catholic Campus Fellowship, will conclude with an explanation and celebration of the Catholic Mass. Chapel elective credit is available.
