Planning is in full swing to honor graduates from traditional undergraduate, adult degree, and graduate programs at a variety of 2016 Spring Commencement events the final week of April.

The efforts of George Fox to aid in restoring a favorable habitat for monarch butterflies will be featured in a television episode of Oregon Field Guide, to be aired on Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB-TV) this Thursday, Feb. 11.

The Field Guide episode, entitled “Monarchs and Milkweeds,” will explore the planting by various groups and individuals of native milkweeds, which serve as an irreplaceable resource for the monarch butterfly’s reproduction during its migrations through western Oregon and the Willamette Valley. The program will air at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, with a repeat presentation scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

With more than 99 percent of the original Willamette Valley habitat gone within historic times, the migration of the monarchs is jeopardized. George Fox has been collaborating its efforts with individuals and organizations to restore usable milkweed foraging habitat for these butterflies by planting milkweed both as landscape plantings and prairie restoration components on campus.

The goal is to not only create usable habitat on campus but also to be a community resource for education and for the propagation stock of these valuable native species.

Hey staff, do we ever have something fun for you at our staff spring workshop conference on Thursday, March 3! This Tuesday, the Staff Development Committee will be drawing 40 staff names to receive a stress-relieving, 25-minute massage during our lunch time together after the workshops!

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for the sixth annual Dalton Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Bauman Auditorium.

James M. Tour, PhD, the T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Computer Science, Professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering at Rice University’s Smalley Institue of Nanoscience and Technology, will present “Jesus Christ and Nanotechnology: The Impact of Faith Upon the Life of a Scientist.” Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, chapel credit is available for students.

Tour has more than 550 research publications and more than 75 patents, with citations totaling more than 55,000. He was named among “The 50 Most Influential Scientists in the World Today” by TheBestSchools.org in 2014.

He will share a brief overview of nanotechnology and his coming to faith in Jesus Christ and how this decision impacted his life. He will also share his thoughts regarding evolution and his hope for science and the young.

A dessert reception and Student Research Poster session follows the lecture.

Recently the Faculty Senate approved a change of schedule for the university’s annual Serve Day. Beginning this fall, Serve Day for the Newberg campus will take place on the third Wednesday of the semester rather than the second Wednesday. Therefore, Serve Day 2016 will be Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Following are reasons for the change:

• It allows more time for planning and implementation of Serve Day at a busy time of the year. The offices heavily involved in planning Serve Day are also busy with beginning-of-the-year activities.
• It is less disruptive, as the first two weeks are the add/drop weeks for students.
• The timing will be better for employees and students with school-age students since most local schools begin the second Tuesday or Wednesday of our semester.
• George Fox serves a number of elementary, middle and high schools, and it is challenging for them to host a serve group with school just beginning. Moving to the third week allows them to get more settled into the school year.
• Moving to the third week will allow more of a semester rhythm to set in for classes, chapel, etc.
• The change opens the potential for the future of sending more groups by major, athletic team, etc.

Performing the pieces will be 18 pianists – comprised of current students, George Fox alumni and pupils from music professor Kenn Willson’s private piano studio.

All employees and students are entitled to one free ticket. Additional tickets are $12 for general admission, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12. Among the pieces to be performed at the “Monster Piano Concert” are Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Beethoven’s March Op. 45 #1, Brahms’ Eight Waltzes Op. 39, Gershwin’s 3 Preludes, Poulenc’s Elegie, Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major, K.448, and Schubert’s Military March Op. 51 #1.

The culmination of the evening comes when 12 players simultaneously perform two Robert Vandall pieces on six pianos: Ballad and Jubilation! (Tocatta).
