Tuition Remission applications being accepted through Nov. 4

Sunday, October 23rd, 2016

Tuition Remission applications are now being accepted. You’ll notice a few changes to this year’s process, including:

  • In order to better coordinate financial aid communications with tuition remission benefits, the due date for  2017-18 tuition remission requests will be Friday, Nov. 4.
  • We are using a Google Doc form. Click here to access the Tuition Remission Google Doc. Paper forms are available upon request from HR. In order to utilize the electronic request form you must be logged into your George Fox email account.
  • The employee submits one request form for each student (no longer three separate forms for undergraduate, ADP and graduate).
  • Supervisor, VP/provost and/or admissions signatures are not required when you initially submit the request, but Human Resources will coordinate the electronic approval process with the employee where approvals are needed.
  • You will receive a confirmation, including a copy of the submitted information, by email. Please review the information for accuracy and retain a copy for your records.

Our hope is that these process improvements make it easier and less time consuming for you to utilize this valuable benefit!

Get ready for Thursday’s ‘Shake Out’

Tuesday, October 18th, 2016

Tomorrow (Thursday) Oct. 20, at 10:20 a.m., the university will participate in The Great Oregon Shake Out, an exercise designed to test the school’s emergency notification systems as well as create dialogue among the George Fox community on how to be personally prepared should an earthquake occur.

Final Tip:
Preparing for disasters can be done over a period of time. Three days’ worth of supplies is a good start and helpful in the event of short-term power outages or temporary evacuation. But a large earthquake and tsunami will leave much of the area’s transportation routes destroyed, making assistance and delivery of supplies difficult to impossible.

Oregonians will have to count on each other in the community, in the workplace and at home in order to be safe until responders can reach them. It is recommended that families, neighborhoods and communities strive to be self-sufficient for two weeks.

After you Shake Out tomorrow, join us at https://www.facebook.com/2WeeksReady/ to learn more about getting your family, neighborhood, and community “Two-Weeks Ready.” The page will be rolling out new information each week.

Tran presents Fall Faculty Lecture tonight in Hoover 105

Monday, October 17th, 2016

The university community is invited to the 2016 Fall Faculty Lecture, “Exploring Intersections of Teachers’ Lives: Race, Religion & Identity,” featuring Yune Tran, PhD, associate professor of education and recipient of the 2015-16 Undergraduate Faculty Achievement Award for Research and Scholarship.

Join us tonight (Tuesday) for the presentation. The lecture runs from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. Tran will discuss research that investigated the identities of preservice teachers based on Helm’s White racial identity development model. Employing a mixed-method design, findings include a sample of 33 preservice teachers with eight narratives that shed light on the role that race and religion play in teachers’ development when addressing attitudes and believes about cultural and linguistically diverse students.

Prior to the lecture that evening, the 2016 Fall Richter Student Scholars Symposium is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. Student scholars from George Fox graduate and undergraduate programs will present their research in a conversational poster format. Refreshments will be served in both the symposium and lecture.
