Attend Civility Project tonight for a discussion about political polarization

Sunday, October 4th, 2020

The first presidential debate is history. Did it make you more or less worried about the effects of polarization in our country?

If political polarization concerns you, you can do something about it by connecting with the 2020 George Fox Civility Project.

The opening session of the 2020 George Fox Civility Project is tonight (Monday) from 7:30 to 9 p.m., in Bauman Auditorium (and Zoom).

It will be starting with a talk by Professor of Politics Emeritus Ron Mock on what civility is, its grounding for Christians in basic elements of our faith, and its roots for political leaders in their fundamental duty to be stewards of our political culture.

Those who attend will have a chance to evaluate excerpts from political debates for their civility. Feedback collected from attenders will help in creating a political civility inventory that citizens can use to hold candidates and political leaders to account for whether their communications and actions strengthen or destroy our political culture.

You can attend in person at Bauman Auditorium or via Zoom. Attendance in person will be limited. Those who arrive after the room reaches its 100-person COVID capacity will be asked to attend via Zoom. Zoom attendees can access the session at the link above.

Questions? Contact Ron Mock (rmock@georgefox.edu).

Spring textbook adoptions are due Oct. 30

Wednesday, September 30th, 2020

Spring 2021 textbook adoptions are due Friday, Oct. 30, and the Bruin Store is looking forward to making this as smooth of a textbook adoption process as possible!

All textbook adoptions will need to be submitted through Follett Discover Adopt, which is the new adoption system that was implemented in February of 2020.

If you are inputting adoptions on behalf of your department, you can access Discover by clicking here. Please use your university email and the password that you originally created.

If you are unable to view certain courses, having trouble logging in, or need a refresh on how to input textbook adoptions, please reach out to Paige Jacobs (pjacobs@georgefox.edu) or Katie Villanueva (1478txt@follett.com) at the Bruin Store.

The Bruin Store is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wellness Wednesday: Quick and easy flu shots

Tuesday, September 29th, 2020

Last week we talked about the importance of taking a flu shot this year. Our Wellness Wednesday message for today is, “Don’t waste fall by being sick. get a flu shot! It’s super quick.”

Remember it takes around two weeks for the body to build immunity in order to provide protection, so plan it now.

Here are your quick and easy options to get a flu shot this year:

  • Find your closest locations online
    • Confirm the type of vaccine you need and put your ZIP code in, and you will get an instant list of all options in your area.
    • If you live in Newberg
  • For Kaiser flu shots:
    • Kaiser drive-through and walk-up flu shot clinics are available from Oct. 3 to Oct. 31, with no appointment necessary.
    • Search by your city or ZIP code here.
  • For employees covered by George Fox health plans:
    • We will have an on-campus flu shot clinic event in mid-October.
    • You will receive an email with more information soon.
    • Please note that availability is limited due to the COVID-19 safety restrictions.

Below are some important items to remember before you get a flu shot:

  • Does the flu shot protect against COVID-19?
    • No. The flu shot doesn’t protect against COVID-19. However, the flu vaccine can help reduce your risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death.
    • If fewer people get the flu, care teams can focus their time and resources on providing COVID-19 patients with the care they need. During 2018-19 flu vaccination prevented an estimated 58,000 flu-related hospitalizations.
  • Should a flu vaccine be given to someone with suspected of confirmed COVID-19?
    • No. If you tested positive for COVID-19, or believe you might have it, it’s best to wait before getting a flu shot. This will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to anyone in the flu shot location, including other patients and healthcare teams.

Be well! Questions? Contact Aga Luptak (aluptak@georgefox.edu).

The Christian’s role in protest discussed tonight

Tuesday, September 29th, 2020

Come hear from Rusty St. Cyr, Keisha Gordon, Victoria Prieto, and Mercy Love about their protest experiences and integration with faith. Chapel credit is available on the iAttended app.

All invited to join in George Fox Civility Project

Monday, September 28th, 2020

Do you wish there was something you could do to help overcome America’s increasing  polarization before it tears our country apart?

You can! Connect with the 2020 George Fox Civility Project. The 2020 GFCP has three elements: two events and a project.

  • The first event will be an introductory session on Monday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium (limit: 100 occupants) or Zoom. Participants will learn a new way of thinking about how political leadership should act, and help create a political civility inventory for assessing whether politicians and others strengthen our political culture or destroy it when they communicate about their different views.
  • The second is a project: a field test of the political civility inventory while you watch the vice presidential debate on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and/or the presidential debate on Thursday, Oct. 15.
  • The closing event on Monday, Oct. 19, will feature George Fox professors Mark Hall and Phil Smith in a (hopefully civil!) debate about who should get our vote for president.

You do not have to participate in all three elements. You can attend either event, or both. If you want to participate in the project, you should attend the first event.

Don’t miss this chance to get in on the ground floor of an important university initiative, and help your community and our nation deal with controversial issues more constructively!

If you want  to come in person, plan to be at Bauman a few minutes before 7:30 p.m. If you want to attend via Zoom, keep watching the Daily Bruin – we’ll post the link soon!

Contact Ron Mock (rmock@georgefox.edu) with any questions.
