Hello students! Bruin Preview is this week and we are in need of more overnight hosts for Thursday, April 10. We’re expecting around 200 students for this event, so we want to make it great. Students have the opportunity to connect with students who are looking at coming to George Fox and convince them that this is the place to be!

Become a George Fox representative for Oregon Campus Compact (ORCC). ORCC is looking for students to join our 2014-15 Student Advisory Board. The SAB convenes a team of Portland college students who work together to advise ORCC and engage their campuses and communities to make a powerful statewide impact.

Students and staff: With the end of the semester approaching, we know everybody is very busy and it’s easy to lose track of where your valuables are. We’d like to remind you to please not leave your valuables unattended, even for “a minute,” and to always keep your cars, bikes and rooms locked.

Please don’t leave valuables in your car as a temptation to thieves; take your valuables with you! And if you see something or somebody on campus that doesn’t look right, please call security immediately at 503-554-2090. We’d much rather come and investigate a false alarm than to have several people notice something amiss and have nobody call us.

Finally, if you are studying late at night at a place other than your residence, please avail yourselves of a security escort back to your vehicle or dorm. Just call the above number a few minutes before you need to walk back and the officer on duty will escort you.

Blazer tickets go on sale on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) inside the ASC offices for Wednesday’s Blazer game against the Sacramento Kings. Only 120 tickets are available for $5 per ticket.

After the game, stick around because George Fox students will get to shoot hoops on the court.

Since the glow-in-the-dark slip-n-slide was such a success, we decided to turn it up a notch and have a glow-in-the-dark pool party! It will be happening this Friday, April 11, at the Chehalem Aquatic Center from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. DJ Rhino will be there, and we will have snacks!

Two open sessions for undergraduate students to meet with members of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accreditation team have been scheduled for today (Tuesday) in Ross 140. Session one runs from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. Session two is scheduled from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m.

The university’s French and cinema programs have joined forces to present the second part of the Fox French Film Festival on Friday, April 11, in Lemmons 8.

Opening the night will be The Chorus, a story taking place in the late ’40s, about little Pierre, a badly behaved boy who attends a dreary boarding school presided over by a strict headmaster. New teacher Mathieu brightens up the place and organizes a choir, leading to the discovery of Pierre’s musical talents. It shows at 7 p.m.

Also that night, at 9 p.m., Of Gods and Men will be featured, which tells the story of eight French Christian monks who live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region.

Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay, come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996.

Filmgoers will also have the chance to indulge in crêpes and other French fare during the intermission between the shows.

The university community is invited to hear Makoto Fujimura, an internationally renowned artist, writer and speaker who formerly served as a presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in Bauman Auditorium.

“A Conversation with Makoto Fujimura on Faith, Art and Culture” will include a showing of the artist’s new documentary film, Golden Sea, and a discussion session with Fujimura about the arts. There is no charge to attend.

Prior to the campus visit, a 5 p.m. pre-event opening is scheduled at the Chehalem Cultural Center, where Fujimura’s work is currently on display in the center’s Parrish Gallery. The Chehalem Cultural Center is located at 415 E. Sheridan St., in Newberg.

The evening will conclude with a post-event reception in the Lindgren Gallery, where Fujimura will be available to sign books. The reception will be co-hosted by Mark Terry of the university’s Department of Visual Art and Design and Joseph Clair, director of the William Penn Honors Program.

The event is cosponsored by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, the Chehalem Cultural Center, and George Fox’s Department of Visual Art and Design and William Penn Honors Program. More information is available at this link. More about Fujimura is available at makotofujimura.com.

Fujimura is recognized worldwide as a “cultural shaper.” He was a presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003 to 2009, and his work is exhibited in galleries around the world. He’s also widely recognized as one of the key illustrators of the St. John’s Bible, the first fully illuminated manuscript to have been commissioned in more than 500 years.

Romania, Argentina and Kenya Summer Serve students are hosting a banquet in the Klages Dining Room on Saturday, April 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.

Sisters Alegría and Confianza live in Colón, Honduras at Amigas del Señor Monastery. They invite women to spend either the summer or a full year with them, sharing in the community and service of the monastery.

Do you have items sitting around in your house that you no longer need? The George Fox Summer Serve teams will be hosting a garage sale to help them fund their trips to Kenya, Romania/Moldova and Argentina, and we need donations!

We are looking for furniture, books, clothing, toys, decorations and any other items that you would be willing to donate to us to sell. We will be collecting items April 14-17 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Spiritual Life House.

Loren Van Tassel will be our speaker for our International Chapel this morning (Friday) from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in the International Center/Cultural House. Loren is a Bible professor here at George Fox and a longtime friend of international students.

Loren will speak about his faith in God and on the topic “Why I Believe in God.” This will be a great time to hear of Loren’s reasons for his faith and to ask questions you might have.
