Registration for Fall Escape, Nov. 7-9, will be in the Bruin Den today (Friday) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Escape the Newberg bubble with your friends for a weekend! $20 gets you a cabin on the Pacific Coast, workshops with Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee, and all the amenities that Twin Rocks Friends Camp has to offer for a weekend!

Do you want to learn about the cultures of others? Come be a part of a brand new student leadership team! All undergraduate students are welcome to apply! We are seeking leaders who want to engage in conversations about biblical racial reconciliation and desire to grow a deeper understanding of others. Up to nine students will be awarded a Cultural Ambassador leadership role! Spiritual & Intercultural Life will award each Cultural Ambassador a $200 scholarship toward their attending SCORR (Student Congress On Racial Reconciliation) in February at Biola University.

Newberg Christian Church is looking for eight to 10 people. They need energetic and fun-loving assistants, worship leaders, game instructors, Bible lesson teachers, and verse-listeners to assist them in their AWANA program for children ages 3 to 12.

Here is a rundown of homecoming events Oct. 17-18 …

On Friday, we will host a Classic Bruins Supper (5-7 p.m. in Cap and Gown Room); a reunion for Dayspring members (6-8 p.m. at Friendsview); a men’s soccer game against Willamette (6 p.m.); and a jazz concert featuring New York-based drummer Matt Wilson (7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium).

On Saturday, morning events include a Dayspring reunion breakfast (9-10 a.m.) and concert (10 a.m.), a department open house and networking gathering (9:30 a.m.), and class reunions (for the classes of 1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004) from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The afternoon/evening schedule includes a women’s soccer game against Lewis & Clark (noon), a football game against Puget Sound (1:30 p.m.), an Alumni and Sports Hall of Fame Awards event (5-8 p.m.), and a “World’s Got Talent” variety show (8 p.m.).

The Wheeler Sports Center will close down tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You will not have access to the gym, locker rooms, dance room or racquetball courts. Please plan accordingly. The Fitness Center will be open for normal business hours, but we ask that you enter through the hallway entrance toward the tennis courts on the field level.

“Consider Leviathan” is the title of the Fall Faculty Lecture featuring the university’s 2014 Undergraduate Researcher of the Year, Brian Doak, PhD. This presentation will explore Doak’s research in the narratives found in the Book of Job.

Join us on Tuesday, Oct. 21, for the presentation. The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. in Hoover 105, and refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by the Faculty Development Committee.

Prior to the lecture that evening, the 2014 Fall Richter Student Scholars Symposium is scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. Student scholars from George Fox graduate and undergraduate programs will present their research in a conversational poster format. Refreshments included.

The campus community is invited to the next installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Oct. 20, in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features Joellyn Fountain, a visiting assistant professor of political science and international studies this year at George Fox.

Fountain will present “Islam and Sub-Saharan Africa,” in which she will discuss the fact that the number of Muslims in the Sub-Saharan region is growing along with their political and social influence. The same session is presented from 5 to 6 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

The George Fox University Players’ homecoming performance is tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium! This year the Players explore the theme “Point Me Home,” telling stories of being lost and found. Interwoven with music and masks, we tell stories from our own lives that explore the places where God is shaping us into who we are.

Winter Serve and Summer Serve applications are due today (Friday)! The deadline is not going to be extended. Students who have any interest in going to Portland, Puyallup, Wash., Twin Rocks or Oklahoma this winter break need to apply today. Winter Serve trips are Jan. 3-10.

It is also the last day to apply for Summer Serve! If you want to be a part of a team going to Kenya, Romania/Moldova, China, Nicaragua or Haiti, get the application in today.
