• 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. – Breakfast on the quad (free to employees and students)
• 8:30 a.m. – Kickoff celebration on quad
• 9 a.m. – Gather at your assignment, find your site number and depart
• Noon – Lunch (employees bring your own lunch or purchase)
• 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. – Dinner and evening celebration (free for employees and students; family members and guests may purchase meal tickets)

I know that you are being bombarded with all kinds of information right now, but if you will take the time to read all of this it will be helpful to you, especially if you are a new student.

I wanted to give you some information about the ID card campus cardlock access system so you’ll know exactly what you have access to.

• All residence hall students have 24-hour access to the building they live in.
• All undergraduate students have visiting access hours to all the residence halls. The hours of access differ depending on the building you’re visiting. Here they are:

Residence Halls (Brandt, Coffin, Edwards, Hobson, Macy, Pennington, & Sutton Hall):

5-10 p.m. – Mon. – Thur.
2-11 p.m. – Fri. – Sun.

Suites (Beebe, Carey & Willcuts Hall):

3-11 p.m. – Mon. – Thur.
Noon – Midnight – Fri. – Sun.

Apartments ( Le Shana Hall):

Noon – Midnight – Sun. – Thur.
Noon – 2 a.m. – Fri., Sat.

All the residence halls have card readers at the entrances to each floor (except Sutton 1). These readers are all programmed to be automatically open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. When they are locked residents have 24-hour access only to the floor they live on. There are no visiting access hours to the floor-card readers for other students.

There are a few cases where residents have access to a floor besides the one they live on:

• Beebe Hall 1 residents have 24-hour access to Beebe 2 in order to do their laundry.
• Edwards 2 & 3 residents have 24-hour access to the first floor on the side of the dorm they live on for doing laundry. Second- and third-floor men only have access to the first floor on the men’s side, and so on for the women.
• Hobson & Macy residents have 24-hour access to Sutton Hall.
• Willcuts Hall 1 residents have access to Willcuts 2 in order to do laundry.

All undergrads have access to the Foxhole in the SUB basement at the following times:

4 p.m. – Midnight – Mon. – Thur.
4 p.m. – 2 a.m. – Fri.
2 p.m. – 2 a.m. – Sat., Sun.

If you are a commuter (live off campus), then your hours of access to the Foxhole are:

7:15 a.m. – Midnight – Mon. – Thur.
7:15-2 p.m. – Fri.
2 p.m. – 2 a.m. – Sat., Sun.

All faculty, staff & students have access to Wheeler Sports Center for the following times:

6 a.m. – 11 p.m. – Mon. – Fri.
7 a.m. – 7 p.m. – Sat.
1-7 p.m. – Sun.

All faculty, staff and students have 24-hour access to the SUB and the Prayer Chapel.

There are cases when you will be granted access to a particular academic building(s) for academic or workstudy purposes. These privileges will be given by the department head or workstudy supervisor as needed.

If you registered for a parking permit for Resident East/West prior to today, due to a glitch in the system, you will not be receiving an email with a link to the temporary permit.

Please park in the areas where your permit allows you to park. If you have not received your parking permit by Wednesday, Sept. 9, please come into the security office for a temporary permit by Friday, Sept. 11.

Anybody registering for a parking permit after today should be receiving the email with a link to a temporary permit.

These auditions are for elective chapel events such as Shalom and other awesome worship experiences, and auditions will be held the first week of school. Construction of the new dining hall will be ongoing this academic year, and safety for students, staff and construction personnel is the utmost priority. Please note the following items:

• Fenced areas are strictly for construction personnel. Open gates are for construction work only.
• Visitors must report to the Andersen Construction trailer near Brandt and Coffin halls.
• Be alert when equipment is moving through campus. Do not walk in front of or near moving equipment.
• Call campus security if you see anything that seems unsafe at any time of day (503-554-2090).

Learn to play piano
Interested in learning how to play piano? Check out MUSI 135 A and B, a piano class for beginners and intermediate-level students. Beginners are considered those with no previous lessons or a year or less of lessons as a child. Intermediate-level players are those with more than one year of lessons recently or two years of lessons as a child. If you’re not sure, you can always email the instructors.

Private lessons
Would you like to learn the piano but are not sure if you want to be in a class? Enroll in MUSA 105 PN for .5 credit. This is “Applied Piano,” which is a private lesson each week. No need to be a music major to enroll in applied piano. Questions? Contact Kenn Willson at kwillson@georgefox.edu

Keyboard Ensemble
A last opportunity for pianists (you will need at least 4-plus years of lessons). Enroll in Keyboard Ensemble, a course that puts two to four students together to work on one or two pianos. This is great fun for pianists to get a similar experience to bands, orchestras or choirs, but you only need to be able to play the piano.

If interested, you can enroll in MUSA 145 K (if you are at 18 credit hours but need to enroll in this ensemble, you can take it for “0” credit). This spring we will be putting together a “Monster Piano Concert” featuring six grand pianos on the Bauman stage, with organ. It’s great fun to prepare, and a big hit with the audience. Tonight (Tuesday) at 9 p.m. in Cap and Gown (just to the right as you exit “The Bon”), will be our first Shalom chapel elective of the year with guest speaker Steve Sherwood, assistant professor for youth evangelism and discipleship. (You can listen here to a bit of Steve on the Shalom vision behind this gathering).

Shalom is a simple weekly gathering started by student leaders eight years ago. It is more “minimalist” in production and is focused on centering us all around Christ, particularly God’s work through Christ to bring everything back to the wholeness God intended, and how we might participate in God’s work in the world as one “body” with many “parts.”

All are welcome to join us with open hearts together!

A beginning guitar class and private guitar lessons are being offered this fall on campus. Sign up and add some fun to your schedule!

The Beginning Guitar Class is offered for those new to the guitar who want to learn in a fun group setting. Learn the skills to play all your favorite rock, folk, pop, and worship songs!  No experience is necessary (MUSI 250-A, Tuesdays/Thursdays, 11:45 a.m. – 12:35 p.m.).

Private Guitar Lessons are offered to bring your playing to the next level very quickly. One-on-one lessons cover beginners all the way to very experienced players. Sign up and you’ll get top-notch instruction that is specific to your skill level and caters to the styles of music that you really want to learn. We can focus on anything from classical, rock, blues, metal, shred, folk, worship, etc. It’s up to you! (MUSA 105 GT/305 GT)

Lessons are taught by G.I.T. Musicians Institute graduate and veteran guitar player/instructor Jordan Stricklen. He has performed thousands of shows with countless bands in countless styles, and has been on many national tours with the bands Spence and Flashing Blue Lights. He is new to the area and is currently focusing on teaching and solo material.
