Cultural Celebration Week is coming Nov. 9-13! Events include but are not limited to the Cultural Fair (Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Bruin Den), LHC Spoken Word and special guest Janet Bennett, who will speak on developing your intercultural communication skills on Monday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in EHS 102. Bennett’s visit is cosponsored by the communication arts department.

Tomorrow (Thursday), we’re having more opportunities to join in Tefillah, our prayer ministry on campus. Come to the Prayer Chapel at 10:50 a.m. for contemplative worship as we explore how those who have come before us have shown us how to greet God in silent prayer.

Then, at 2 p.m., in the Prayer Chapel, you can join us for Lifted Hands, a time of intercessory prayer, praying into issues on our campus and in our world. Prayer in community and in solitude can be intimidating, but it is also a refreshing place of peace in this crazy college life, and we invite you to join us in that this week.

Do tests drive you crazy? Need help with your test-taking skills? Attend a workshop, “How to Get A’s on All Your Tests (or at Least Become a Better Test Taker),” tomorrow (Thursday) from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in Hoover 105.

On Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m., the university will host a Cultural Fair in the Bruin Den as part of Cultural Celebration Week festivities – and we’d love to have you participate! The fair will feature various cultures from Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. Students and employees either born or having a significant experience in a culture are invited to share something about that culture (food, displays, clothing, games, etc.) with the George Fox community.

It has been reported to security that many students are driving way too fast on roads around campus, roads traversing campus, and in the parking lots, and that there have been many “near misses.” Please slow down and also look thoroughly before you pull in and out of parking spaces!

It is often very dark when classes begin and end, so please pay extra attention when looking out for other cars, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Janet Bennett, executive director of the Intercultural Communication Institute and a leading expert in the area of intercultural relations, will be facilitating a lecture entitled “Tools for Improving Your Intercultural Communication Skill Set” on Monday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in EHS 102. All are welcome to attend.

Bennett is a former Peace Corps volunteer, an educator, and an author who has devoted her career to helping others develop intercultural competency.

Come hear a special speaker, Lutaaya Abdul, share about the work he is doing in Uganda through the African Hearts Orphanage. He will visit with us tonight (Tuesday) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in EHS 102.

Lataaya grew up in the slums of Kampala. He was introduced to Christ at a school that taught the gospel through music. Since then, he has started African Hearts Orphanage, an orphanage for vulnerable young people to improve their safety and physical, spiritual and emotional health and future well-being.

The organization’s target population is children who are living on the streets, many of whom have been orphaned by HIV or abandoned or victimized by family violence. The organization currently operates two homes housing former street children in Senge. Children living in these homes are taught the Bible and are provided with shelter, food, love and education. Lataaya’s visit is being sponsored by the Center for Study Abroad.

Come join a student-led discussion regarding the reconciliation of science and religion. We’ll tackle questions such as “How do we become comfortable with opposing viewpoints? How do we bring back critical thinking? What is considered ‘political correctness’ and does that even matter?”
