The faculty of the College of Christian Studies invites the campus community to join them for daily morning prayer weekdays, from 8 to 8:20 a.m., in Hoover 250.

Prayer format will alternate between liturgical and unprogrammed, with various members of the CCS faculty providing leadership. Come as often as your schedule allows. All are welcome.

Janet Bennett, executive director of the Intercultural Communication Institute and a leading expert in the area of intercultural relations, will be facilitating a lecture entitled “Tools for Improving Your Intercultural Communication Skill Set” on Monday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in EHS 102. All are welcome to attend.

Bennett is a former Peace Corps volunteer, an educator, and an author who has devoted her career to helping others develop intercultural competency.

Come hear a special speaker, Lutaaya Abdul, share about the work he is doing in Uganda through the African Hearts Orphanage. He will visit with us tonight (Tuesday) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in EHS 102.

Lataaya grew up in the slums of Kampala. He was introduced to Christ at a school that taught the gospel through music. Since then, he has started African Hearts Orphanage, an orphanage for vulnerable young people to improve their safety and physical, spiritual and emotional health and future well-being.

The organization’s target population is children who are living on the streets, many of whom have been orphaned by HIV or abandoned or victimized by family violence. The organization currently operates two homes housing former street children in Senge. Children living in these homes are taught the Bible and are provided with shelter, food, love and education. Lataaya’s visit is being sponsored by the Center for Study Abroad.

Come join a student-led discussion regarding the reconciliation of science and religion. We’ll tackle questions such as “How do we become comfortable with opposing viewpoints? How do we bring back critical thinking? What is considered ‘political correctness’ and does that even matter?”

The ‘Wineskin’, GFU’s student literary and art magazine, is still accepting submissions for the Fall 2015 issue. If you are a writer, photographer, or artist, this is a great chance to get your work published in a journal.

This issue’s theme is wilderness; if you need an inspiration (or a challenge!) for your submission, you are free to start there. We are asking for:

· Fiction & Non-Fiction Prose: must be a stand-alone piece (1500 word-limit)
· Poetry
· Photography: Include title and send as a 300 dpi image
· Art (Graphic, studio, etc.): Include 300 dpi image (The ‘Wineskin’ is happy to take a quality image for you—email for more information!)

Winners of each category will receive a $25 gift card of their choice.

The university will host a pair of free concerts this week, with a Fall Symphonic Band Concert scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5, and a Chehalem Symphony Orchestra performance set for Sunday, Nov. 8. Both take place in Bauman Auditorium.

Thursday’s symphonic band concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and features the university’s Handbell Ringers and Symphonic Band. The former will play the selections For All the Saints, You Raise Me Up and On This Day Earth Shall Ring, while the latter will perform Symphonic Fanfare, Stardust, Liberation, Florintiner Grande Marcia Italiana, Irish Tune from County Derry and Portrait of Freedom. Cynthia McGladrey serves as conductor of the Handbell Ringers, and Pat Vandehey and Dick Elliot serve as conductor and associate conductor of the Symphonic Band, respectively.

The Sunday, Nov. 8, Chehalem Symphony concert begins at 2:30 p.m. and will feature the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, Concerto in E Minor, and Serenade for Strings in E Major. Also performing will be a Keyboard Ensemble playing Get up and Go and Brightwood Barn. Vandehey serves as conductor of the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra.

The William Penn Honors Program invites you to join us tonight (Monday) as Melissa Lane, Class of 1943 Professor of Politics at Princeton University, will give a talk titled, “The Politics of Unsustainability: Plato on the Logic of Constitutional Change.” Her presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Hall.

Lane’s books include The Birth of Politics: Eight Greek and Roman Political Ideas and Why They Matter (Princeton, 2015); Eco-Republic (Princeton, 2012); Plato’s Progeny (Duckworth, 2001); and Method and Politics in Plato’s Statesman (Cambridge, 1998).

Tonight (Monday) in the Chehalem Cultural Center ballroom, printmaker and professor Monika Meler will speak about her work as this week’s Art Talk presenter. She is originally from Poland and has completed many residencies around the world, from New York to Belgium.

Join us tonight (Monday) for a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation in Hoover 105 featuring Melanie Springer Mock, professor of English at George Fox. She will present “It’s Complicated: Orphan Care, International Adoption and the West.” The same presentation will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. and again from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests are asked to attend the later session.

Mock will discuss complexities associated with international adoption and address the question, “How can we acknowledge the good parts of international adoption while also recognizing its problematic elements and its reliance on Western privilege?” Her presentation is the ninth in the “Majority World and the West” series.
