Spring Serve leader application deadline is Saturday

Are you interested in leading or participating in a serve trip over spring break? We are looking for both student and faculty leaders.

This year’s trips are going to:

  • Camp Attitude, a not-for-profit Christian organization dedicated to providing a unique faith-based camping experience for families in the disability community
  • Flying H Ranch, a ranch 30 miles west of Yakima, Wash., that ministers to at-risk youth
  • Urban Impact in Seattle, where the focus will be on building relationships and serving in the community through the local church
  • Mending Wings, a nonprofit Native American youth organization located on the Yakama Reservation in Washington state
  • Word Made Flesh in Los Angeles, where the focus will be to establish beloved community in a low-income neighborhood of the city

If you are interested in participating, applications are due no later than Friday, Feb. 12. If you would like to serve as a student leader, applications are due Saturday, Jan. 30. Applications and more details on each trip are available at this link.

‘Pink Out,’ free-throw contest are Friday night in Wheeler

Please wear pink and attend our home women’s (6 p.m.) and men’s (8 p.m.) basketball games tomorrow night (Friday) in support of Pink Zone and breast cancer awareness! We have great sponsors, including Providence Newberg Medical Center, and we will be raffling off free George Fox Pink Zone T-shirts during both games against Pacific. Prizes will also be awarded for “Best in Pink.”

In addition, we’ll join other colleges and universities across the nation in celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day. This celebration will include a free-throw contest at halftime of the women’s game for any interested women/girls in attendance, with lots of prizes from Dutch Brothers Coffee.

At halftime of the men’s game, we will recognize our senior varsity women student-athletes and athletic trainers in a special ceremony.

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for the sixth annual Dalton Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Bauman Auditorium.

James M. Tour, PhD, the T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Computer Science, Professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering at Rice University’s Smalley Institue of Nanoscience and Technology, will present “Jesus Christ and Nanotechnology: The Impact of Faith Upon the Life of a Scientist.” Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dr. Tour will share a brief overview of nanotechnology and his coming to faith in Jesus Christ and how this decision impacted his life. He will also share his thoughts regarding evolution and his hope for science and the young.

Tour has more than 550 research publications and more than 75 patents, with citations totaling more than 55,000. He was named among “The 50 Most Influential Scientists in the World Today” by TheBestSchools.org in 2014.

A dessert reception and Student Research Poster session follows the lecture.
