Housing deposit information for fall 2016

Thursday, February 18th, 2016

As a reminder, students need to pay a $150 non-refundable housing deposit to participate in housing selection for the 2016-17 academic year. After housing assignments have been made, this deposit will be held and applied towards future charges.

Housing deposits can be paid in student financial services (SFS) on the first floor of the Stevens Center through March 17. Before you pay, you should be aware of the following:

  1. Your student account must be paid in full. If on a payment plan, your February payment (or March payment if after March 1) must be received and any amount not covered by your payment plan must be paid.
  2. Regardless of who pays the deposit, each student must stop by SFS. If the deposit is accepted, you will receive a housing deposit confirmation slip. This slip is needed as a record of payment.
  3. A payment received in any other way will not be processed as a deposit; instead, it will overpay the account or be applied towards the next monthly payment. SFS routinely refunds over-payments, so if you receive a refund check that you are not expecting, stop by to confirm the status of your deposit.

For additional details about the selection process or the housing deposit, visit the housing and residence life website or email housing@georgefox.edu with questions.

Square 1 meeting at the fire pit tonight

Thursday, February 18th, 2016

The Gospel. Worship. Fun.

Square 1 is a completely student-led chapel elective (meaning: you get credit) designed to get back to the simple, core elements of faith in Christ — to start “back at square one.”

It’s going to be fun! We’ll meet tonight (Friday) at 6 p.m. at the fire pit in the canyon where we’ll make s’mores and spend time in worship. Then a fellow student, Mr. Caleb Reynolds, is going to lead our Bible study. Afterwords, we’ll hang out in pyromaniacal goodness and maybe tell some spooky stories. Make sure to dress warm and bring a friend!

Questions? Contact Daniel McCleskey (dmc777@me.com).

LACI lecture discusses religious liberty and same-sex marriage

Thursday, February 18th, 2016

All are invited to a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture this Monday, Feb. 22, when Mark David Hall, the university’s Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor of Politics, speaks on the topic “Religious Liberty and Same-Sex Marriage: Conflicts and Possibilities” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The legalization of same-sex marriage and the adoption of laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation have resulted in cases that may force some religious citizens to choose between their livelihoods and their religious convictions. Mark discusses potential and actual conflicts and draws from American history to argue that it is possible to protect religious liberty without undermining the common good.

The theme for this semester’s LACI series is “Christianity and Pop Culture.” For more information, contact Laurie Fair at lfair@georgefox.edu.
