Mr. Darwin’s Tree, the acclaimed British one-man play about the life and work of Charles Darwin, will be performed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Produced by Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford (SCIO) and sponsored by George Fox’s science and religion clubs, the play aims to enhance the conversation on science and religion.
Written by noted playwright and director Murray Watts (The Miracle Maker, KJB: The Book that Changed the World, The Dream) and starring British film, TV and theatre actor Andrew Harrison (Dorian Gray, Miss Marple, Beyond Narnia), Mr. Darwin’s Tree presents a very human and very real Charles Darwin, one who wrestled with the challenges that his theories posed for traditional beliefs.
It also presents Darwin’s wife, Emma, as an intelligent and articulate representative of Christian faith. In doing so, the play rejects the “straw man” effigies of Darwin presented by both his extreme protagonists and antagonists, providing the opportunity for lively engagement, thoughtful conversations and fresh explorations.
The performance will mark the play’s first tour of the U.S. since it first premiered in 2009 at Westminster Abbey in England. The April 21 show will be followed by a reception and discussion with the playwright and leading campus academics.

The university community is invited to a free spring concert at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, April 7, in Bauman Auditorium.
The event will feature performances by the university’s Symphonic Band and Concert Choir, as well as the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra. The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Pat Vandehey, will perform Bach’s Fantasia in G Major and Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez.
The Chehalem Symphony Orchestra and Concert Choir, also under the direction of Vandehey, will perform Finlandia by Jean Sibelius. The orchestra will also play a winning selection from the George Fox Concerto Competition, featuring Stephanie So on violin playing the second movement of Baal Shem by Ernest Bloch. The movement title is Nigun.
Finally, the university’s Concert Choir and Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Danielle Warner, will join forces to present Gloria by John Rutter.

Join the Doctor of Physical Therapy program on the evening of Saturday, April 16, for our second annual Glow in the Dark 5k/10K Neon Night Run!
The 5K cost is $30 for adults and $20 for students/children; the 10K cost is $40 for adults and $30 for students/children. Each participant will receive a free T-shirt, glow stick/paint, and a free black light photo booth picture. The event begins at the Roberts Center.
With your support, the physical therapy program will be able to send 19 students and six faculty on a service trip to Africa (both Uganda and Ghana) to provide physical therapy services to children and adults living without basic healthcare access.
The group going to Ghana will be partnering with Green Hills Health Science School to teach sections of their PT curriculum in order for them to become accredited. The group going to Uganda will primarily be working with children with disabilities and assessing the functional changes they have made over the past year. With changes to General Education requirements come new opportunities in the College of Christian Studies. We’re offering several elective options each semester for students to fulfill their second-tier Bible/Religion Gen Ed requirement (after Bible Survey and before History and Theology of Christianity). These courses are numbered BIBL 215, RELI 215 and BIBL 315.
Offerings next year include two studies of women’s influence throughout church history. Read the descriptions below, and consider adding these courses to your 2016-17. Both are taught by Jeannine Graham.
Fall 2016 RELI 215-B — Women in Church History
Explore what we can learn from the journeys, struggles and contributions of women throughout church history as they sought to express their Christian faith, exercise their gifts of ministry and examine their sense of calling despite challenging obstacles. Biblical, historical and theological perspectives will be explored along with examining ways in which both women and men today can partner together in ministry in contemporary contexts.
Spring 2017 RELI 215-A — Women’s Voices in Contemporary Theology
Historically, theology has been formulated almost exclusively by men. Within the last 50 years a burgeoning number of female theologians have emerged in academic circles to give fresh expressions of the core tenets of Christian faith and practice that take stock of women’s perspectives and life experiences.
What critiques are being raised toward traditional theologies? What constructive proposals are being offered? How have factors of gender, race and social location influenced the emergence of Latina, womanist and feminist theologies? What theological assumptions underlie traditionalist, complementarian and egalitarian views of women’s roles in the church and society?
More than a dozen additional elective courses are also being offered. Consult the online schedule for listings.
