• One 90-second contemporary monologue (fully memorized and rehearsed).
• 60 seconds of a song selected from a musical of your choice (fully memorized and rehearsed). Please bring sheet music with you so that our accompanist can play for you.

Greetings from the George Fox theatre department! The first show of the season, Blithe Spirit, kicks off tomorrow night (Thursday)! Come join us for a lighthearted romp into the 1940s as we witness Charles Condomine face his ghosts.

Synopsis: When Charles Condomine invites Madame Arcati to perform a séance as an evening entertainment for a dinner party he suddenly finds himself face-to-face with his deceased wife, Elvira … much to the chagrin of his current spouse, Ruth. Mayhem ensues when Ruth is accidentally killed and united with Elvira on the “other side.” Together, the two blithe spirits haunt their hapless husband with hilarious consequences. Join us for an evening of classic British comedy that will delight and surprise.

The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Oct. 20-22 and Oct. 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a Sunday, Oct. 30, matinee at 2 p.m. If you wish to purchase tickets, they are available online.

Believe it or not, it is the middle of the semester. Now is the time to take an assessment of your perception of how you are doing in each of your classes. Midterm grades are important indicators of how you are doing in your classes. While they are not a part of your permanent record, they are important to pay attention to.

In some cases, midterm grades represent about half your grade in the course. If you have questions, you should check with your professors. It is vital to know where you stand in each of your classes.

Midterm grades are meant to encourage you to get in touch with others: your professor, your advisor, your Career & Academic Planning Coach and the Academic Resource Center. The worst thing to do about midterm grades is to ignore them or to assume you can improve them on your own.

Professors do want to meet with you. Do not hesitate to make an appointment with each of them.

Midterm grades are due by Sunday, Oct. 23. You should plan to check your midterm grades after this date.

To check your mid-term grades in MyGFU:

• Click on “Self-Service”
• Click on “Enrollment”
• Click on “View My Grades”
• Click on the correct term
• Click on the “Midterm Grades” tab (If you do not see a “Midterm Grades” tab, it is likely none of your professors have entered any midterm grades for you. Please contact your professors to find out what your midterm grades are.)

Now you need to determine what to do next:
 Contact your professors. Faculty are not required to enter midterm grades. You are advised to check with each of your professors about your status in their class.

Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D). The last date to withdraw is Sunday, Nov. 6.

You can usually go below being enrolled in 12 credit hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid or housing. However, you should contact representatives in these departments to be certain:

Withdrawal results in a “W” on your transcript but does not factor into GPA. If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA. Confirm any thoughts of withdrawing from classes with your advisor.

Meet with each professor, especially those teaching courses you’re struggling in. Even if your professor doesn’t post midterm grades, find out from the professor what your grade is. You should also meet with your advisor to discuss options. Use labs, help sessions and the ARC.

If you think you might have a learning disability, have some assessment done. Contact the Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340 or stop by their office on South River Street to make an appointment.

The campus will look a little different on Saturday as we prepare to host thousands of guests at our football game that afternoon at 1:00 p.m.. Here are some things to make note of:

Bauman Parking Lot
Be sure to move your cars out of the Bauman parking lot on Friday evening. This space will be dedicated to vendors and tailgating on Saturday. Stop by on Saturday and check out all of the food and activities happening before the game!

Entrances to the football game
There will be two entrances into the game and both are located in the Bauman parking lot, directly behind the stadium.

Wheeler Sports Center closed
The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This means the basketball gym, racquetball courts and locker rooms will be closed. The Fitness Center will remain open for normal business hours, but you will need to enter through the hallway entrance located on the field level, toward the end of the building near the tennis courts. There will be security officers who will ask you where you are headed; just let them know that you are going to work out.

Bauman Walkway
The sidewalk located between the football stadium and Bauman will be closed. Please walk around the building and do not move the barricade.

Barricades
If you see a barricade, it is there for a reason. Please do not move them, jump over them, crawl under them, or unlock them.

Circle Parking Lot
The circle parking lot near Wheeler will be closed for the day. This space is reserved for officials to park in. Officials will arrive as early as 8:30 a.m.

Tickets
Students and staff can show their ID cards at the gate to get into the game. Additional tickets can be purchased online or at the gate by visiting http://athletics.georgefox.edu/information/tickets.

Join Bruins LEAD this Thursday, Oct. 20, to hear men’s golf coach Branden Thompson speak on “How to Get Your Teammates Back on Track.”

You don’t have to be an athlete or coach to be part of Bruins LEAD. It is simply an opportunity to develop your leadership skills. We will take basic leadership concepts and spend one hour diving into details of how to develop responsible and respected leaders.

Each week, you will get to hear from one of our coaches on the following topics:

Oct. 20 – Branden Thompson on “How to Get Your Teammates Back on Track”
Oct. 27 – Jessica Hollen on “How to Manage Team Conflict”

All sessions take place from 8:40 p.m. to 9:40 p.m. in Lemmons 8.

While some of the content may be specific to athletics and teams, we feel strongly that every person will end up working in a team at some point in their lives, and this information can be relevant for everyone on campus.
