Our women’s basketball team earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth consecutive year and will travel to the host site, the University of Puget Sound, to play Whitman College in the first round. If the Bruins win, they’ll play again on Saturday.

We’re hosting viewing parties in Canyon Commons Room 101. Come join us for fun, big-screen basketball – and free snacks!

• NCAA First Round: Friday, March 3, at 5 p.m. – George Fox vs. Whitman
• NCAA Second Round: Saturday, March 4, at 7 p.m. – George Fox vs. TBD (only if the Bruins win Friday)

Recent business graduates working at Adidas, Pivot Group, Intel and Deloitte will be on campus this Monday, March 6, at 3:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. Come hear about their current positions and companies, and what they did in college to be competitive candidates in the marketplace.

You’ll get tips and advice that you can put into practice right away to help pave your way to a successful career. This panel presentation is open to all majors and will run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., with chances to network from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

The university’s music department has scheduled a series of concerts in the next two weeks highlighting student musicians in both vocal and symphonic performances. All events are free and open to the public, and each will take place in Bauman Auditorium.

Winter Choir Concert

This Saturday, March 4, the school’s Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and Women’s Chorale will perform at 7:30 p.m. The Chamber Choir will perform Brahms’ O Schöne Nacht Op. 92 No. 1 and Neckereien Op. 31 No. 2, as well as Richard Hundley’s Come Ready and See Me and Kirke Mechem’s The Lighthearted Lovers.

The Women’s Chorale, meanwhile, will perform I will Be Earth by Gwyneth Walker, Dance on My Heart by Allen Koepke, and Heart, We Will Forget Him! by James Mulholland. The final piece features Everett Isabell on French horn.

Concert Choir pieces will include With a Lily in Your Hand by Eric Whitacre, Afternoon on a Hill by Eric Barnum, and Les Chansons des Roses and O Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.

Symphony Orchestra Concert

On Tuesday, March 7, a Symphony Orchestra Concert is set for 7:30 p.m. The itinerary includes Poem Symphonique for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 43a by Peter Benoit; Movement 1 Will-o’-the-Wisps, featuring Lauren Timmons on flute; La Traviata from Addio del Passato by Giuseppe Verdi, featuring soprano Malia Hansen; and Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, featuring Simeon Brown on violin. Timmons and Hansen were winners of the 2017 George Fox University Concerto Competition.

Symphonic Band Concert

Finally, a Symphonic Band Concert is set for a 7:30 p.m. start on Tuesday, March 14. Pieces to be performed include Dedication Overture by Vittorio Giannini, Saxophone Concertino by Satoshi Yagisawa (featuring Nathanael Ankeny on alto/soprano saxophone), Grace by Brian Balmages, Firefly by Ryan George, Nitro by Frank Ticheli, and Inglesina “The Little English Girl” by Davide Delle Cese.

Join us for Ash Wednesday services today. The first will be at 4 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium, a short 30-minute service for the entire community which will include the disposition of ashes (chapel credit is NOT offered for this).

Then, at 7 p.m. we will have a one-hour service including more worship in addition to the disposition of ashes (chapel credit IS offered).

A group of George Fox physical therapy students will be going on a medical missions trip to Africa May 30 to June 13, and we are organizing a banquet/silent auction to help raise money for the trip!

The university community is welcome to attend the banquet and auction at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 12, in Canyon Commons. Tickets are $25 and cover the cost of dinner and one entry into a random drawing for a gift basket. All proceeds go directly to our trip.

At the dinner, we will auction off various gift baskets and gift certificates generously donated by community members and businesses. Join the George Fox University Players for a free 55-minute performance involving music and theatre beginning at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, March 3, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

We’ll be exploring the theme “Ready or Not,” stories where life comes pouring in around us and we realize we are not in control. The performance will then be followed by Playback Theatre, a time for communal storytelling and sharing.

All are invited to the 2017 Spring Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, March 7, featuring Craig Johnson, professor emeritus of leadership studies and recipient of the 2015-16 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research & Scholarship.

Craig’s lecture, “A Walk on the Shadow Side of Leadership,” will begin at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Following is a synopsis:

“We will focus on the power leaders have to cast light or shadow over followers. They must take special care, ‘lest the act of leadership create more harm than good.’ Refusing to face the dark side of leadership makes abuse more likely. Exploring the destructive dimension of leadership highlights the ethical challenges facing leaders and equips us to illumine rather than darken the lives of others.”

Come early and enjoy the 2017 Spring Richter Student Scholars Symposium! It is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. George Fox student scholars, from both undergraduate and graduate programs, will present their research in a conversational poster format.

The university community is invited to a special lecture, “Pluralism: Surviving and Thriving Through Deep Difference,” this Thursday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Presenting the lecture will be John Inazu, the Sally D. Danforth Distinguished Professor of Law and Religion and Professor of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis. He teaches criminal law, law and religion, and various First Amendment seminars. His scholarship focuses on the First Amendment freedoms of speech, assembly and religion, and related questions of legal and political theory.

Inazu is author of the books Liberty’s Refuge: The Forgotten Freedom of Assembly (2012) and Confident Pluralism: Surviving and Thriving Through Deep Difference (2016).
