Tickets for the Department of Art & Design’s fashion show are now available! This is the fashion program’s final show, as the major will be discontinued at the end of this year.

It would be our pleasure to see you in attendance on Friday, March 24, at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.)! Doors open at 6:30 p.m., the show begins at 7:30 p.m., and a dessert reception (catered by the Newberg Bakery) follows.

Applications are now being accepted for 2017-18 ARC Consultants. If you know students who write well, are thoughtful learners, and desire to support peers in their academic success, please encourage them to apply.

Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply; representation from multiple disciplines strengthens the ARC’s ability to support a wide range of students. Completed materials are due by Friday, March 17.

The Wheeler Fitness Center is looking to hire a student for its student manager position. If you’re interested in managing and improving the Fitness Center in a leadership role, go to the Handshake website (joinhandshake.com) to apply and submit the needed documents! A group of George Fox physical therapy students will be going on a medical missions trip to Africa May 30 to June 13, and we are organizing a banquet/silent auction to help raise money for the trip!

The university community is welcome to attend the banquet and auction at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 12, in Canyon Commons. Tickets are $25 and cover the cost of dinner and one entry into a random drawing for a gift basket. All proceeds go directly to our trip.

At the dinner, we will auction off various gift baskets and gift certificates generously donated by community members and businesses. The William Penn Honors Program invites you to hear Peter Iver Kaufman speak on “Leadership and the Humanities” this Thursday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Kaufman is a professor at the University of Richmond in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies and professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s history and religious studies departments. He teaches a wide range of leadership courses and studies the political cultures of late antique, medieval and early modern Europe and North Africa.

He has written nine books, is the author of more than 40 articles on authority, religious conflict and literary history, and is editor-in-chief of Religions and editor of a series of monographs on the religion around iconic figures.

Tonight (Monday) at Art Talk we have the pleasure of hearing from ceramic artist and curator Helen Otterson. Exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, Helen’s ceramic and glass sculptures are part of the permanent collections at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, Nicolaysen Art Museum, and the Plains Art Museum.

Helen holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami, and she currently teaches ceramics and sculpture at North Dakota State University. Her work is inspired by an interest in biomorphic form, the human encounter with disease, organic growth and changes in cells.

All are invited to the 2017 Spring Faculty Lecture tomorrow (Tuesday), featuring Craig Johnson, professor emeritus of leadership studies and recipient of the 2015-16 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research & Scholarship.

Craig’s lecture, “A Walk on the Shadow Side of Leadership,” will begin at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Following is a synopsis:

“We will focus on the power leaders have to cast light or shadow over followers. They must take special care, ‘lest the act of leadership create more harm than good.’ Refusing to face the dark side of leadership makes abuse more likely. Exploring the destructive dimension of leadership highlights the ethical challenges facing leaders and equips us to illumine rather than darken the lives of others.”

Come early and enjoy the 2017 Spring Richter Student Scholars Symposium! It is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. George Fox student scholars, from both undergraduate and graduate programs, will present their research in a conversational poster format.

The itinerary includes Poem Symphonique for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 43a by Peter Benoit; Movement 1 Will-o’-the-Wisps, featuring Lauren Timmons on flute; La Traviata from Addio del Passato by Giuseppe Verdi, featuring soprano Malia Hansen; and Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, featuring Simeon Brown on violin. Timmons and Hansen were winners of the 2017 George Fox University Concerto Competition.

Join us for a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation tonight (Monday), when Randy Woodley, Distinguished Professor of Faith and Culture, presents “Whose American Dream?” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Woodley, a United Keetoowah Band Cherokee, will discuss such questions as “Where did the American Dream begin and for whom?,” “What are the philosophical foundations for the American Dream and how do they stack up to the way of Jesus?” and “What are the myths that need to be embedded in our psyche in order to participate in the American Dream?”

One of the university’s new general education course options, HUMA 290 Art, Beauty, and Truth, taught by art professor Jillian Sokso, has just been added to the roster of 2017 Summer Online courses! Students now have the choice to take either two separate courses in ARTS, THEA, or MUSI, or the single HUMA 290 course (see General Education catalog page for a description of this course).

All of the George Fox summer online courses are offered at 50 percent off tuition, and cover an array of basic Gen Ed options and more. Registration is open now! With changes to General Education requirements come new opportunities in the College of Christian Studies. We’re offering several elective options each semester for students to fulfill their second-tier Bible/Religion Gen Ed requirement (after Bible Survey and before History and Theology of Christianity). These courses are numbered BIBL 215, RELI 215 and BIBL 315.

More than 20 elective courses will be offered, including two studies of women’s influence throughout church history; courses related to the global church, spiritual formation through story, and indigenous spirituality; and biblical studies (Life of Christ, Revelation & Apocalyptic Writings, Job and the Problem of Evil, Psalms, The Gospel of John, Biblical Peacemaking, Women and the Bible).
