All undergraduate business majors and undergraduate business faculty are encouraged to attend our business and economics department portrait shoot. You will receive an electronic copy of your portrait to use on LinkedIn and with your resume materials.

The portrait shoot is free. It is scheduled between 9 and 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, on the first floor of the Hoover Academic Building. Your portrait will be added to the portrait walls in the College of Business. Please sign up here.

The next Koinonia is tonight (Thursday)! At Koinonia, we learn about and celebrate the many cultures represented in our student body. This month we will gather for rich discussions, delicious food and awesome activities in partnership with the Fusion Asian American Club!

Fusion aims to cultivate an inclusive and authentic environment where students of diverse multicultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds can develop, embrace and express cultural identity in order to affirmatively impact the greater George Fox community.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, residence life will offer a women’s self-defense class from 7 to 9:30 p.m. for George Fox students and employees (location TBA). Teaching it will be an officer in the Newberg-Dundee Police Department who has offered these classes in the local community for the last decade.

The class size will be limited. Female students can sign up (free of charge) in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center. Participants will also be required to to sign a waiver form in order to participate. All participants need to be 18 years or older as of Dec. 6.

The class will involve a mixture of listening and practice. The instructor is able to modify and adapt techniques to match most physical limitations, so please do not self-select out of this training due to physical limitations.

Join us at our next Science and Religion Club meeting as professor Phil Smith raises important philosophical questions for artificial intelligence researchers and continues the conversation about the future of A.I. We’ll meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, in Canyon Commons 103.

The university community is invited to a special presentation, “Defending Faith: The Politics of the Christian Conservative Legal Movement,” at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, in Hoover 102.

Daniel Bennett, an assistant professor of political science at John Brown University, will make the presentation. Bennett’s research is focused on the intersection of American politics, law and religion. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from George Fox, then worked for a year in the audit and inventory management industry before starting work on his doctorate. His PhD is in political science from Southern Illinois University. He recently published his first book, Defending Faith: The Politics of the Christian Conservative Legal Movement.

Help parents in need in our community this Christmas by being a part of a diaper drive hosted by the Students for Life Club! We will have boxes set out for the donations in the Bruin Den and Bridge Café starting Friday, Dec. 1, until the Tuesday of finals week.

All donations will be given to the Pregnancy Counseling and Information Center right here in Newberg. Newberg PCIC is in need of bigger diaper sizes (sizes 3-5), but any diapers will be a blessing.

SpIL and ASC would love to have you participate in a kit-packing party during “Holiday Hangout,” scheduled tomorrow (Friday) from 8 to 10 p.m. in Canyon Commons.

Employees and students alike are invited to participate, and each housing area is asked to bring the following items:

• EDG: Combs and brushes
• RAE: Toothbrushes
• HAN: Washcloths
• HMS: Toothpaste and floss
• PCWB: Bars of soap
• HAW: Coloring books/crayons
• Commuters: Toys (stuffed animals, Legos, cars, dolls, etc.)

The boxes will be packed for children transitioning into foster care through the Department of Human Services and refugee kits through Medical Teams International.

As we head into the Christmas season, Legacy Randall Children’s Hospital is hosting a sock drive for the Portland community. They are asking for new socks for all ages, with the goal of giving out 26,000 pairs of socks. We’d like to help them with that goal!

This week our chapel speaker will be Ping-Yi Shi, who will share with us a Scripture that is meaningful to her from Matthew 6:25-34: “Do not worry, trust the Lord.”

Ping-Yi grew up in a farm in Taiwan and has been serving international students since 2003. She has worked in nursing for more than 10 years and served as a nurse and as a teacher at a nursing college in Taiwan.

We will begin with a meal together, followed by our chapel speaker, with some time for small-group discussion and prayer. It is a great time of coming together and being encouraged. All students are welcome! Chapel credit will be available.
