Learn strategies to manage and overcome your stress and anxiety! Develop the skills to be free from unnecessary worry and fear. Beginning Thursday, March 1, the Health and Counseling Center will host a free stress management class that will meet weekly each Thursday for four weeks. Each session will last from 5 to 6 p.m. and meet in the Health and Counseling Center’s classroom.

Students need to pay a $150 non-refundable housing application fee to participate in housing selection for the 2018-19 academic year. The $150 returning student housing application fee is a one-time fee for each student. Once paid, students do not need to pay again for subsequent years in campus housing. The application fee is held and returned to each student upon graduation. (Please note that this is different than the enrollment deposit paid upon acceptance.)

The housing application fee can be paid through CashNet or in person at Student Financial Services (SFS) on the first floor of Stevens Center through Friday, March 23.

Before you pay you should be aware of the following:

1. Your student account must be paid in full. If on a payment plan, your February payment (or March payment if after March 1) must be received and any amount not covered by your payment plan must be paid.
2. The housing application fee is a one-time fee. Once you’ve paid the application fee, you no longer need to pay it again for subsequent years in housing.
3. A payment received in any other way won’t be processed as a housing application fee, but instead will overpay the account or be applied toward the next monthly payment. SFS routinely refunds over-payments, so if you get a refund check you are not expecting please stop by to confirm the status of your application fee.

His group has studios in Seattle; Sunnyvale, California; Minneapolis, Austin, Texas; and Portland. He loves creating something from nothing and bringing talented people together around a shared vision.

The university community is invited to two free concerts to be held in Bauman Auditorium on Thursday, March 1, and Monday, March 5.

On Thursday, a Winter Symphony Orchestra Concert, featuring the university’s Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, will perform at 7:30 p.m. The former will perform Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins, and the latter will perform Johann Strauss II’s Mein Herr Marquis from the opera Die Fledermaus and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major. Featured will be soprano Julia Wendt, winner of the 2018 George Fox Concerto-Aria Competition.

On Monday, a Winter Symphonic Band Concert will play at 7:30 p.m., featuring the Symphonic Band playing a number of selections, including Berstein’s Slava, Schumann’s When Jesus Wept, and Sousa’s Jack Tarr.

John Foubert, a professor of higher education and student affairs administration at Oklahoma State University, will be on campus to speak with students on Thursday, March 8. You won’t want to miss what he has to say on these important topics (elective chapel credit is available as well)!

Foubert has written several books and articles on these topics and is a much-sought-after speaker and consultant to colleges across the nation and the military. He makes frequent appearances on CNN and NPR, and is cited regularly in news outlets like the Huffington Post, The New York Times, and U.S. News & World Report. He has testified before Congress and briefed the White House and the Pentagon about how to end sexual violence.

George Fox University will serve as host for the 2018 Oregon Academy of Science’s annual meeting this Saturday, March 3. This is a one-day annual meeting for researchers, educators and students statewide to exchange ideas, present current research, and to strengthen professional and personal relationships.

This year, our keynote speaker is Marshall Gannett from the U.S. Geological Survey, who will be speaking on “Hydrology and Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystems of Central Oregon.”

OAS encourages participation from a broad range of interests in the natural and social sciences. Attendees from around the state represent anthropology, biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, philosophy/environmental science/ethics, health science, STEM education, geography, geology, mathematics, physics, political science, psychology and sociology. Faculty and students are welcome to participate in this one-day event. Included are a continental breakfast, poster sessions, oral presentations and lunch.

You could be the cure! Help cancer patients with a simple mouth swab. Sign up for the “Be the Match” bone marrow registry on Monday or Tuesday, March 5-6, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Canyon Commons 103.

All are invited to the 2018 Spring Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, March 6, at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Our featured speaker, and recipient of the 2016-17 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship, is Jason Brumitt, assistant professor of physical therapy.

Brumitt’s lecture, “Can Preseason Performance and Fitness Testing Identify Athletes at Risk for Injury?,” will focus on a recent trend in sports science research to identify athletes at risk for injury based on measures of preseason fitness. His research has entailed collecting measures of preseason fitness and functional performance in collegiate athletes to identify associations between sport readiness and future injury.

Come early, between 5 and 6 p.m., and check out the work of our Richter Student Scholars and Steinfeldt Peace Scholars at a symposium in the Hoover lobby. George Fox students will present their research and peace projects in a conversational poster format.

About the exhibit: During the 2016-17 academic year, the Graduate School of Counseling staff and faculty committed​ ​themselves​ ​to a book group, reading through and processing the work of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me. In the book, Coates addresses what it means to inhabit an African American body in today’s America.
